The Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Signature Card is provides a few good perks for anyone that flies Korean Air a few times a year. It offers double SKYPASS miles on Korean Air ticket purchases as well as at gas stations and hotels. It also provides bonus points for renewing the card, an annual coupon to save money on a ticket purchase, and a few KAL Lounge passes. While you will have to justify the $95 annual fee this card has, if you value SKYPASS miles this may be the card for you.
The Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Signature Card features three bonus categories that earn extra SKYPASS Miles. Those categories are gas station, hotel, and Korean Air ticket purchases. There is no limit to the amount of SKYPASS Miles you can earn with this card and there is no cap on any of these categories. Below are the details of each bonus category on the Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Signature Card.
2x Korean Air Tickets
The Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Signature Card earns 2 SKYPASS Miles per $1 spent on Korean Air ticket purchases. Both this card and the premium SKYPASS Select Visa Signature Card both offer the highest amount of SKYPASS Miles you can earn on Korean Air Tickets and work well for building your SKYPASS balance. If you're looking for a better return, a few cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card and AMEX Platinum Card offer returns of at least 4.5% and 5% respectively. The SKYPASS Select Visa Signature Card offers 2 SKYMILES per $1 spent on ALL airline purchases.
2x Gas Station
Gas station spending with the Korean Air SKYPASS Signature Card will earn 2 SKYPASS Miles per $1 spent. This category will apply to merchants that are coded as gas stations such as Exxon, Speedway, BP, and Mobil. Earning double SKYPASS miles on gas is a good deal. It's an excellent everyday category that has a lot of potential and earns a great return. The SKYPASS Signature Card isn't the only card that earns co-branded airline cards that earns double miles. This 2x category is featured on several cards such as the Citi American Airlines Platinum Select Card which also earns miles on dining, the Bank of America Asiana Visa Signature Card which earns double miles on both grocery & gas, and the Hawaiian Mastercard which earns double miles on dining, gas, and grocery!
Using the Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Signature Card on hotel purchases will earn 2 SKYPASS Miles per $1 spent. This is the highest amount of SKYPASS Miles you can earn on this category between this card and the luxury SKYPASS Select Visa Signature Card. If you're not loyal to a hotel chain, using this card to earn extra SKYPASS miles can be worth it, but for most hotel chains, the co-branded card is usually the way to go. Earning 6x Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent using Marriott's Credit Card Line-Up or as high as 14x Hilton Honors Points with Hilton's Credit Cards will need a far superior return as well as grant status, free nights, and other various hotel perks.
Any purchases on the Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Signature Card outside of the categories above will earn 1 SKYPASS Mile per $1 spent. Since these miles are valued at 1.5 cents each, you're still looking at a solid return even when making non-category purchases. A better return can be obtained with cards such as the 2% cash back earning Citi Double Cash, but if you're focused primary on SKYPASS Miles, any of the three SKYPASS Credit Cards will cover non-category purchases at a rate of 1 SKYPASS Mile per $1 spent.
Perks and Benefits
2,000 Bonus Miles
SKYPASS Visa Signature Cardholders will receive 2,000 bonus miles annually a few weeks after the annual fee has been paid. 2,000 bonus miles are worth about $30 which is about one-third of the fee. The SKYPASS Select Visa Signature Card offers a 10,000 mile bonus (worth about $150) after you run some heavy spend through the card.
$50 Off Coupon
SKYPASS Visa Signature Card members will receive a $50 off coupon for Korean Air ticket purchases annually. This coupon will be deposited in the card members SKYPASS account and has to be used within 90 days of the date issued. This coupon applies to Prestige Class and Economy Class base fares, excluding taxes and surcharges and is is valid from Korean Air North American gateways to Asia on Korean Air operated flights with the same outbound (departure route) and inbound (return route) trip itinerary and may not be applied to tickets with stopovers and multi-leg journey.
This coupon makes up for another good chunk of the annual fee. It's a nice perk to have but you're really just receiving the money you already paid back as an annual coupon. The SKYPASS Select Visa Signature Card offers a $100 discount on Korean Air ticket purchases that follow the same rules as above.
2 KAL Lounge Coupons
SKYPASS Visa Signature Cardholders will receive two KAL Lounge Coupons good for Korean Air Airport Lounges in Korean Air gateway cities within North America and Seoul (Incheon), Korea only. These lounge coupons will be issued after the annual fee has been paid.
No Preset Spending Limit (NPSL)
The SKYPASS Visa Signature Card features the No Personal Spending Limit ability along with a Revolve Limit which allows you to carry a designated part of your balance from one statement to the next. Do note that NPSL does not mean unlimited spending. There is still a hidden max defined by account history, credit record, income verification and liquid assets. The SKYPASS Select Visa Signature Card also the NPSL ability.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Signature Card sign up bonus is 30,000 SKYPASS Miles after spending $3,000 within the first 90 days of having the card. 30,000 SKYPASS Miles are generally worth about $450 which is a pretty good deal.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The annual fee for the Korean Air SKYPASS Visa Signature Card is $95. This is about the standard entry price for co-branded airline cards. Similar cards around this price point include the Delta Gold Card and American Airlines Platinum Select Card. Between the $50 off coupon and 2,000 bonus miles, you will get about $80 of your annual fee back bringing the total down to $15 a year. That should easily be justifiable between the several bonus categories, KAL lounge passes, and sign up bonus.
Authorized User Fee
The SKYPASS Visa Signature Card does not have an authorized user fee. If you're building up SKYPASS Miles as your main source of travel currency, I recommend adding friends and family that shop in the bonus categories presented on this card.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The foreign transaction fee for the SKYPASS Visa Signature Card is 0%. This lets you earn SKYPASS Miles worldwide without being penalized a fee for out of country purchases.
