Virgin Atlantic Mastercard
Calculate how many Virgin Atlantic Miles you can earn and the cash value of the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard based on spend, benefits, and fees.
The Virgin Atlantic Mastercard is a co-branded airline card provided by Bank of America. While it does provide a solid return on Virgin Atlantic points, it comes up short when it comes to any real perks when flying the airline. There's no priority perks, no way to spend your way to status, and no waived fees. The only thing the card really provides is points. Unfortunately, since Virgin Atlantic is 1-to-1 transfer partners of both Membership Rewards Points and Ultimate Rewards Points, you can earn Flying Club Miles at a higher rate across several categories. Unless for some reason Chase or AMEX doesn't work for you, I do not see anything that makes this card stand out.
The Virgin Atlantic Mastercard features one bonus category which is purchases directly with Virgin Atlantic. There's no limit to the amount of miles you can earn with this card.
3x Virgin Atlantic
Purchases directly with Virgin Atlantic Airlines with the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard will earn 3 Flying Club Miles per $1 spent. This is pretty good return of 3.6% if you peg these miles at 1.2 cents each. This rate can either be matched or outperformed by several reward cards between AMEX and Chase. On the AMEX side, you can earn 3x points with the AMEX Gold Card along with 4x points on dining and grocery. You can then transfer these points to your Virgin Atlantic account at a 1-to-1 ratio. If you're looking at Chase, you can earn 3x on travel (which include airline purchases) on both the Chase Ink Business Preferred Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve Card.
All purchases on the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard outside of Virgin Atlantic will earn 1.5 Flying Club Miles per $1 spent. This is a very nice return when it comes non-category spend. If you're looking at ways to earn more Flying Club Miles, the Blue Business Plus earns 2x on the first 50,000 in purchases which give you only a slight advantage over the Virgin Atlantic. The 1.5x rate can also be matched by both the Chase Freedom Unlimited Card and Chase Ink Business Unlimited Card in which both earn 1.5% cash back and have no annual fee. In order to transfer rewards earned on Chase's cash back cards, you'll need at least one Ultimate Rewards Point earning credit card.
Perks and Benefits
Bonus Flying Club Miles
Spending a minimum of $15,000 on the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard during the anniversary year will earn 7,500 bonus miles. An additional 7,500 Bonus Miles will be awarded after a minimum spend of $25,000 during the anniversary year.
50% Off 2nd Reward Ticket
This Virgin Mastercard also comes with the ability to get a Second Reward Ticket for Half the Miles when Flying Club miles are redeemed for a Virgin Atlantic Economy reward ticket. Cardholder must spend $25,000+ in purchases annually to qualify for the second reward ticket discount. This economy companion reward ticket is only once per year. Fees and taxes relating to the complimentary reward flight will still need to be paid.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard is 20,000 Flying Club miles after your first purchase. Cardholders will also receive 2,500 Bonus Miles for each of the first two authorized users added to the card for a total of 5,000 Bonus Miles.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The annual fee for the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard is $90. This is in-line with other co-branded airline cards. All of the perks of this card requires heavy spend. If you're able to earn the bonus Flying Club Miles, you'll make for more than double the fee. You might be able to squeeze a good amount of value out of the 50% off deal as well if you're able to hit that $25,000 goal. While this card is not worth it in my opinion, the fee is still justifiable if this is the card you want and you can run $25,000 across the card during the calendar year.
Authorized User Fee
The Virgin Atlantic Mastercard has an authorized user fee of $0. This means you can add friends and family as additional users to help you build your Flying Club Miles faster. If you end up getting this card, the 1.5x earning rate for non-category makes it worth adding authorized users.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The foreign transaction fee for the Virgin Atlantic Mastercard is 0%. This allows you to earn the same great rate of Flying Club Miles outside of the United States without worry about being penalized a fee for international purchases.
