If you're a grocery shopper, the Everyday Preferred is one of the best Membership Rewards Point earning cards you could have. It earns a great amount of points on grocery and backs it up with a solid return on gas purchases as well. To top it off, it features a 50% point bonus when a certain amount of transaction has been made during the billing statement which is 30% higher than it's no annual fee sibling The Everyday Card. This card is usually paired with AMEX's other point cards such as The Platinum Card and The Blue Business Plus Card.

American Express Membership Rewards Points are easily redeemable for 1 cent each, but can be worth up to 2 cents or more. The best value of Membership Rewards Points occurs when they are transferred to their many airline and hotel travel partners. Membership Rewards Points can also be redeemed for airfare, hotels, cruises on the AMEX Travel Portal, statement credits, at top retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon during checkout, and much more. The full list of earning partners as well as point redemption calculator, point transfer/conversion calculators, and the list of all available Membership Rewards Point earning cards can be found on our Membership Rewards Points Calculator page. The calculators on that page will convert any amount of Membership Rewards Points to the dollar value for every redemption available.

Bonus Categories

3x Supermarkets/Grocery

The AMEX Everyday Preferred card earns 3 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent at supermarkets. This is capped at a max of $6,000 a year just like every card in the Everyday and Blue Cash families of credit cards. After you surpass that cap, supermarket purchases will only earn one Membership Rewards Points per dollar. The grocery store must be located in the U.S. and it's main purpose must be the selling of a wide variety of food and household products. This includes, but not limited to, stores such as Kroger, Giant Eagle, Vons, and Winn-Dixie. Some online supermarkets are also included such as FreshDirect. Superstores, convenience stores, and warehouse clubs are not considered to be supermarkets and will not earn the 3x bonus points. This includes stores such as Amazon, Walmart, and BJ's.

When it comes to earning points on grocery, the AMEX Everyday Preferred locks down the top spot with the highest earning rate. Combined with the 50% bonus (explained below, in the bonus section), it earns 4.5 Membership Rewards Points per dollar. This means grocery purchases on the Everyday Preferred earn at minimum a 4.5% return and that's only if you use the easy redemption value of 1 cent each. The only card that puts up a fight is the revamped Gold Card which offers 4x Membership Rewards Points on supermarket purchases. The Gold Card also earns 4x points on restaurant and 3x on airfare making it a very solid card when it comes to earning points.

2x Gas Station

Spending done at Gas Stations will earn 2 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. It's a nice bonus category to have in addition to Supermarket spending. If you meet the transaction goal, you can earn a 50% bonus which will net you 3x points per $1 spent. The only card that can stand up to this is the Business Rewards Gold Card (3x bonus if selected). Since both of these cards overlap on a category or two, you will want to make sure you put enough spend through the card if you want to pair these AMEX cards together.

1x Non-Category

The Everyday Preferred earns 1 Membership Rewards point for every dollar spent on non-category purchases, but when you combine it with the 50% bonus, it earns 1.5x points per dollar. The only card that can beat this is the Blue Business Plus Card which earns 2x on all purchases up to $50,000. So if you don't have that business card, the Everyday Preferred is the next best thing when it comes to miscellaneous spending!

+1 AMEX Travel Portal

As with all the Membership Rewards Point earning cards, the Everyday Preferred earns 2 points on purchases made on the American Express Travel portal. The Platinum Card and The Business Platinum Card are earn 5x on the hotel and airline purchases through the travel portal while the Blue Business Plus Card earns 3x Membership Rewards Points assuming the $50,000 bonus category cap hasn't been hit.

Perks and Benefits

50% Bonus Points

The AMEX Everyday Preferred adds a 50% point bonus of the points earned for the billing period to the account if the card is used to make 30 qualifying purchases within that billing period. This means it can earn up to a whopping 4.5 points per $1 spent on supermarkets if that transaction goal is met every month.

The primary benefit of the AMEX Everyday Preferred Card is the 50% point bonus earned after making 30 qualifying purchases within that billing period. Those bonus points will be added with the points earned through normal card spend. Meeting this spend goal bumps the earnings on grocery purchases up to 4.5 points per $1 spent. This gives the bonus category a return of 4.5% if you Membership Rewards Points at there easy value of 1 cent each.

Standard AMEX Benefits

As with all AMEX cards, the Everyday Preferred Card also features perks such as, but not limited to, AMEX Offers, access to AMEX presale tickets, return protection, roadside assistance, complimentary ShopRunner membership, extended warranty, purchase protection, and travel accident insurance.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard AMEX Everyday Preferred signup bonus is 15,000 Membership Rewards Points which is easily worth $150. A welcome bonus as high as 20,000 Membership Rewards Points can sometimes be obtained if you use incognito/private browsing.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The Everyday Preferred has an annual fee of $95. Whether or not it's worth the annual fee will depend on how much Membership Rewards Points are worth to you. The easy value is 1 cent per point, but it could be a worth a lot more transferring to airline and hotel partners. If you value Membership Rewards Points and spend a great deal on grocery (~$300+ per month), it will be worth the annual fee due the 50% bonus perk.

Authorized User Fee

Another good thing about the Everyday Preferred is that it has no authorized user fee. Thanks to the point bonus and it's ability to earn 1.5x points on non-category spend, this is a great card to add family and friends to in order to always get a good return on Membership Rewards Points.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Everyday Preferred has a transaction fee of 0%. You will not get anything from the bonus categories, but the 50% bonus will make sure you earn at least 1.5x points per dollar for international purchases which is the best you can get from any of the Membership Rewards Point earning cards.

Recommended Cards

The AMEX Everyday Preferred card is one the best cards when it comes to accumulating Membership Rewards Points. Below are a few recommendations of cards that compliment the Everyday Preferred along with a few that could be a better choice depending on spend habits.

Blue Business Plus

Of course you knew this would be the first card mentioned! The Blue Business Plus is essential when it comes to accumulating Membership Rewards Points. It works as a great backup card offering 2x points for the first $50,000 in purchases. This allows you to gain, at minimum, double points for all purchases ensuring that ALL purchases get you at least a 2% return.

The Platinum Card

It has a hefty $550 annual fee, but it's worth it if you're a frequent traveler! Earn 5x Membership Rewards Points on airfare purchases directly with the airline and 5x points on airfare and hotels purchased through the American Express travel portal. Platinum Card holders also gain access to over 1,000+ lounges consisting of Delta SkyClubs, Priority Pass Lounges, and Centurion Lounges. A $200 airline credit, $100 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit, and a $200 in Uber credits also come with the card. If you're not a frequent user of Uber, you can get the Business Platinum Card for an annual fee of $450, which has the majority of The Platinum Card benefits minus the Uber credit. The Business Card also has a 35% rebate that bumps the value of Membership Rewards Points up to 1.54 cents each! Did I mentioned that additional cardholder also receive the perks for both Platinum Cards?

Non-Grocery Shoppers

If you're not much of a grocery shopper or you shop at super centers and wholesale clubs (such as Walmart, Sam's Club, or Target) then the Everyday Preferred will not be of much use to you. The next best thing for accumulating Membership Rewards Points would be the Blue Business Plus mentioned above. If you eat at restaurants, The Gold Card would work wonders since it earns 4x Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. You may even want to check out different reward programs such as Ultimate Rewards Points (value of 1.25+ cents per point) or Citi ThankYou Points (value of 1.25+ cents per point) which both have cards that focus heavily on travel, dining, and entertainment.
