The American Express Gold Card is one of AMEX's best credit cards and is generally one of the best on the market for earning points. It offers big returns for those who spend in the supermarket and restaurant categories. It also provides $120 in annual dining credits and $100 in airline incidental credits. Pair this card with Platinum and Blue Business Plus, and you're looking at one of the best AMEX combinations of cards.

Bonus Categories

The AMEX Gold Card has 3 bonus categories which are restaurant (worldwide), U.S. supermarket, and airfare. The U.S. supermarket has a $25,000 per year spend cap in which you'll earn at the non-category rate for the remainder of the year after hitting the cap. The other categories have no cap. There is no limit to the amount of Membership Rewards Points you can earn with the AMEX Gold Card overall.

  • 4x Restaurant
    • Purchases are for restaurants worldwide.
  • 4x U.S. Supermarket
    • Note that these purchases are for the U.S. only; International supermarket purchases will earn you the non-category rate.
    • Annual spend cap of $25,000 per year; Earns at non-category rate once cap is hit
      • Why a limit so high? Because gift cards can be picked up from grocery stores. Earning 4x on gift cards is a great way to expand this category to others (i.e. getting a $100 AutoZone gift card is equal to earning 4x on Autozone purchases).
  • 3x Airfare
    • Can be booked direct or through the American Express Travel Portal.
  • 1x Non-Category

The AMEX Gold Card is the best Membership Rewards Card for maximizing your earnings on both restaurant and U.S. supermarket spend. It's also a great choice for dining charges internationally since the card has no foreign transaction fee.

Sign Up Bonus (SUB)

The standard AMEX Gold Card sign up bonus is 40,000 Membership Rewards Points after you use the new Card to make $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of Card Membership. You can sometimes use incognito/private browser to get a sign up bonus of 50,000 Membership Rewards Points as a welcome offer.

Fees

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Gold Card is $250. This is an increase from the Premier Reward Gold's fee of $195. If you can make proper use of the $100 annual airline credit and $120 in dining credit, that would bring the fee down to $30 a year. While the airline credit isn't too hard to use, the dining credit is tied to specific restaurants so that could be a little harder to use depending on where you live and/or enjoy the restaurants.

Authorized User Fee

Whereas the Premier Rewards Gold used to have an authorized user fee, the AMEX Gold Card does not. Adding additional users to the Gold Card will not take away from the value. This is an excellent card to add additional users to thanks to the high amount of Membership Rewards Points it offers.

Foreign Transaction Fee

There is no foreign transaction fee on the Gold Card. This means you will not be penalized for making purchases outside of the United States. With the restaurants category applying worldwide, this is the #1 choice for anyone looking to earn Membership Rewards Points on international dining purchases. While AMEX is now more widely accepted than ever, you will still want a back up VISA or Mastercard with no foreign transaction fee that earns a great return on dining just in case.
