Citi ThankYou Preferred Card
The Citi Preferred Card is a ThankYou Point earning card offered by Citi Bank. This card was closed to new applicants December 2018 and the Citi Rewards+ Card was launched the following month. The Preferred Card is considered a basic card meaning it does not grant the ability to transfer ThankYou Points to airline partners like the Citi Prestige and Citi Premier cards. For those who still have the card, it offer an "okay" earning potential with it's two bonus categories of dining and entertainment considering it has no annual fee.
The Citi ThankYou Preferred Card features two bonus categories that earn additional ThankYou Points. These categories are dining and entertainment. There is no limit to how many ThankYou Points you can earn spending in either category.
The Citi ThankYou Preferred Card earns 2 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on dining/restaurant purchases. This include cafes, bars, lounges, and fast food restaurants. Purchases at bakeries, certain restaurant/cafes inside department, grocery, or warehouse stores will not qualify for this bonus category. This is the highest amount of ThankYou Points you can earn for this bonus category. Since ThankYou Points are worth 1 cent for Preferred Card holders, this is only a return of 2% which can be beat by cards such as the Barclay Uber Card which earns 4% cash back on restaurants, bars, and UberEats while having no annual fee.
The Citi Preferred Card earns 2 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on entertainment purchases. Citi has an extensive list of what qualifies as an entertainment purchases. This category includes:
- live entertainment
- live theatrical productions
- live sporting events
- movie theaters
- amusement parks (including zoos, aquariums, circuses and carnivals)
- tourist attractions (including museums, and art galleries)
- record stores
- video rental stores
- on-demand internet streaming media
Citi also have a list of what does not fall under the entertainment category:
- sporting camps
- public and private golf courses
- country clubs (including membership fees)
- stores that sell musical instruments
- video game arcades
- bowling alleys
- stores that primarily sell video games/accessories
- charitable organizations that provide live entertainment
- sports complexes where you participate in the sport
The Capital One SavorOne Card offers 3% cash back on entertainment purchases and has no annual, authorized, or foreign transaction fee. It's a good alternative to the ThankYou Preferred if you're looking for a better return, but when it comes to ThankYou Points, this is the highest amount of points you can get for the entertainment category.
Any spending on the Citi ThankYou Preferred Card outside of dining and entertainment will only earn 1 ThankYou Point per $1 spent. This is only a return of 1% which is terrible. I recommend grabbing up a card that provides a 1.5% or higher return on miscellaneous purchases such as the Citi Double Cash Card.

Sign Up Bonus
There is no standard sign up bonus for the Citi ThankYou Preferred. The Preferred Card usually offers a 0% Intro APR period on both purchases and balance transfers for 15 months.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The Citi ThankYou Preferred Card does not have an annual fee meaning you will always be in the positive when using the card to earn rewards.
Authorized User Fee
There is no fee for adding additional users to the Citi Preferred Card. Both restaurant and entertainment are excellent everyday categories in which adding friends and family as authorized users would greatly help boost your ThankYou Points.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The foreign transaction fee for the Citi ThankYou Preferred Card is 3%. Using this card out of country would drain your points faster than you could earn them. If you're looking for a card that features both restaurant and entertainment categories that doesn't have a foreign transaction fee or annual fee, the Capital One SavorOne Card is what you're looking for.
