FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card
The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card has an interesting earning structure that offers bonus FlexPoints based on which category has the highest in monthly spending. This ensures that you get the maximum amount between the three categories, but leaves the remaining categories open to better earnings.
The Value of U.S. Bank FlexPoints
FlexPoints are valued at around 1.5 cents each and can be redeemed for airfare, hotel stays, car rentals, cruises, statement credits and more. You will get the best value out of FlexPoints when they are redeemed for travel. FlexPoints can be transfered to other FlexPoint Accounts with up to a max of 20,000 points a year. FlexPoints can also be purchased at $0.03 a point and a minimum of 3,000 must be purchased. FlexPoints are purchased in increments of 1,000 with a max purchase of 60,000 points a year.
The FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card features three bonus categories that earn bonus FlexPoints per $1 spent. Two of those categories are charity and cellular providers. The third category will be the highest in monthly spend between airline, gas, and grocery purchases. There is no limit to the amount of FlexPoints you can earn with this card. Below are the details on each bonus category featured on the FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card.
The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card earns double FlexPoints on all purchases towards Charity. This is an uncommon bonus category in the credit card world and while it will not be the main focus for most, it's a nice bonus to have when you feel like contributing.
2x Cellular Providers
U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card members will earn double FlexPoints on all purchases made with cellular providers. This can be a good way to build points when purchasing a new cell phone with a provider.
When airline purchases on the FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card exceed the total amount of both gas station purchases and grocery purchases on the card, members will earn 2 FlexPoints per $1 spent on airline purchases and 1 FlexPoint per $1 spent on both gas station and grocery purchases. Earning double points on airline purchases will generate a solid return of 3% since FlexPoints are valued at 1.5 cents each. The FlexPerks Gold Card earns 2x on airfare without having to be the highest in spend. Even with these earning rates, there's many other cards that offer a return of 3% or more on airfare.
2x/1x Gas Station
When gas station purchases on the FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card exceed the total amount of both airline purchases and grocery purchases on the card, cardholders will earn 2 FlexPoints per $1 spent on gas station purchases and 1 FlexPoint per $1 spent on both airline and grocery purchases. Double FlexPoints can easily be earned on the FlexPerks Gold Card without meeting the highest spend qualification. Earning a 3% return on gas is pretty good. The PNC Cash Rewards Card (4% cash back) and Sam's Club Mastercard (5% cash back) can earn big savings on gas as well.
When grocery purchases on the FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card exceed the total amount of both airline purchases and gas station purchases on the card, cardholders will earn 2 FlexPoints per $1 spent on grocery purchases and 1 FlexPoint per $1 spent on both airline and gas station purchases. A 3% return on grocery is not too shabby. This is the highest amount of FlexPoints you can earn on grocery out of the three available U.S. Bank FlexPerks cards. You can combine this card with the FlexPerks Gold Card and maximize earnings but using this card strictly for grocery, cellular, and charity purchases. If you're looking for a higher return, the American Express Blue Cash Preferred earns 6% cash back on the first $6,000 in grocery purchases and the American Express Gold Card offers a 4% return (at minimum) for grocery and restaurants.
Any spending on the FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card outside of the above categories will earn 1 FlexPoint per $1 spent. Since FlexPoints are worth 1.5 cents each, this is still a solid return of 1.5% which is not bad for anyone looking to build their FlexPoints balance.
