Department store isn't a commonly featured bonus category. If you make purchases more than a few purchases at any given department store, more than likely you'll want to take a look at that store's credit card. Generally, the rewards offered on department store credit cards will outshine any rewards you can earn with a standard non-store rewards card. For example, the best credit card for Macy's is generally the Macy's Credit Card and the best credit card for American Eagle Outfitters is generally the American Eagle Outfitters Credit Card. If you don't shop at any specific store enough to pick up a co-branded credit card, then you'll want to find a card that gives a great return across all stores.

The no-annual fee AMEX Blue Cash Everyday is one of the only non-store cards that feature department stores as a bonus category. You'll earn a simple 2% cash back on department store purchases as well as 2% back on gas station and 3% back on grocery purchases. It's a great card to have if you want to keep it simple.

If you want to earn a good return on Membership Rewards Points, both the AMEX Blue Business Plus (2x) and AMEX Everyday Preferred (Up to 1.5x) are great options.

Chase has it's own good selection of cards with the Chase Freedom Unlimited and Chase Ink Business Unlimited with both cards having the ability to earn points when you have at least one Ultimate Rewards Point earning card.

Outside of those cards, you'll want to find a card that will earn you at least a 1.5% to 2% return on your spend. These are cards such as the Citi Double Cash or PayPal CashBack Mastercard.

Listed below are the best credit cards for the given category sorted by return. Some credit cards have a wide range of value due to having multiple redemption options that yield such. For example, you may be able to redeem a program's points for cash back at value of 0.5 cents each but redeeming the same points for travel could offer a value of 1.25 cents each. You don't want to pick up a card that has an annual fee that doesn't match up with how you plan on redeeming your rewards. That will give you a negative return and no one wants that. So be sure to research the value of points and miles to get an idea of how value they will have for you. Don't go by the return values listed below alone.

You can click on a card's Rewards Calculator button (where applicable) to calculate how much you can earn across all categories on the card based on your spend, how much you value the benefits of the card, and any annual fees including authorized user fees (if applicable). You'll also be able to compare the results side by side any other card featured on the site based on the same spend. And spend you enter into a credit card rewards calculator will carry over to other credit card calculators on the site.
