The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday is a solid credit card choice for anyone trying to accumulate a decent amount of cash back without having to worry about an annual fee. It's one of AMEX's best cards when it comes to earning on grocery along with it's annual fee counterpart The AMEX Blue Cash Preferred Card. The Everyday Preferred Card earns a significantly higher amount of cash back for grocery purchases. The break even point between both cards when it comes to grocery spending is $270 per month. If you spend more than that per month, the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred Card will earn you more cash back. If you spend less, stick with the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Cash Everyday.

Bonus Categories

The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card features three bonus categories which are supermarkets, gas stations, and department stores. Below are the details of each category and how they stack up with similar or popular cards.

3% U.S. Supermarkets

The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card earns 3% cash back on all U.S. supermarket purchases per $1 spent. This bonus category is maxed at a total of $6,000 per year. Once you pass that threshold, all supermarket purchases on the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday will only earn 1% cash back per $1 spent. American Express considers a supermarket as being a place that offers a wide variety of food and household products such as meat, fresh produce, dairy, canned and packaged goods, household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies. This includes place such as, but not limited to, Meijer, Vons, Giant Eagle, Winn-Dixie, and Foodtown. Some online supermarkets are also included such as FreshDirect. Like lots of other credit cards with grocery/supermarket bonuses, superstores and warehouse clubs are not included. This includes the usual culprits consisting of Amazon, Target, and Walmart.

When it comes to earning 3% cash back without paying an annual fee, you have yourself a great card. Besides it's annual fee sibling The AMEX Blue Cash Preferred this is one of the best returns you can get when it comes to grocery spending.

2% U.S. Gas Stations

All U.S. gas station purchases made with the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card will earn 2% cash back per $1 spent. There is no cap on this amount meaning you can earn 2% cash back all year long without any worry. American Express considers gas stations to be places that, of course, specialize in gas. These are places such as Exxon, Mobil, Hess, and Shell. Gas stations that are part of supermarkets or warehouse clubs will not usually count towards the 2% cash back bonus. This is places like Giant Eagle's GetGo (usually codes as grocery for me) or gas stations that are tied to Walmart or Sam's Club.

Earning 2% cash back on gas stations with the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday is a decent return for a card with no annual fee. The AMEX Blue Cash Preferred earns an unlimited 3% cash back on all gas station purchases. If you're looking outside of the AMEX window, both the Bank of America Cash Rewards and Bank of America Business Cash Rewards credit cards earn 3% cash back on gas stations and have no annual fee. Want to take it a step farther? The PNC Cash Rewards Card earns 4% cash back on gas stations and has no annual fee as well!

2% U.S. Department Stores

The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card earns 2% cash back on select U.S. department stores which is not bad considering department stores are not a normal bonus category featured on standard credit cards. Unlike the other bonus categories above, American Express has a list of department stores that will earn 2% cash back. These are the stores that earn 2% cash back in the department store category when using the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday:

  • Bealls
  • Belk
  • Bloomingdale's
  • Bon Ton Stores
  • Boscov's
  • Century 21 Department Stores
  • Dillard's
  • J.C. Penney (JCP)
  • Kohl's
  • Lord & Taylor
  • Macy's
  • Neiman Marcus
  • Nordstrom
  • Saks Fifth Avenue
  • Sears
  • Stein Mart

Besides credit cards that are acquired directly though the department store itself, you will not find many credit cards that have a bonus category focused on them. Even with the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday's extra earning on department store purchases, it can easily be beat by any 2% cash back cards like the Citi Double Cash.

1% Non-Category

All purchases on the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card that does not fall within the bonus categories above will earn 1% cash back. That's not good. I wouldn't put any non-category spending on the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday since other cash back cards such as the (hint hint) AMEX Cash Magnet Card earns 1.5% cash back on all purchases. It also has no annual fee and pairs quite well with the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday or AMEX Blue Cash Preferred.

Perks and Benefits

Standard AMEX Benefits

There are no special benefits or bonuses specific to the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday card. It does come with the standard AMEX perks such as AMEX offers, roadside assistance, travel accident insurance, extended warranty, shoprunner membership, return protection, and more.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard AMEX Blue Cash Everyday signup bonus is $150 after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. This AMEX Blue Cash Everyday bonus is given back to the cardholder in the form of a statement credit. A welcome bonus of $200 can sometimes be obtained if you use private/incognito browsing before applying for the card.

Credit Card Fees

Fees
Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card does not have an annual fee. You will always generate a positive return on rewards without having to worry about fees devaluing your earnings.

Authorized User Fee

There is no authorized user fee for the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card. If you have friends or family that spend in the supermarket, gas station, or department store category, I'd recommend adding them as an additional cardholder so that you can maximize your cash back with AMEX.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card has a foreign transaction fee of 2.7%. This means you will lose the value of your cash back faster than you can earn it. I do not recommend using the AMEX Blue Cash card out of country. If you're looking to maximize cash back overseas, I recommend any of Capital One's cash back cards such as the Quicksilver Card (1.5% cash back) and the SavorOne Card (3% Dining, Entertainment; 2% grocery) or the Barclay Uber Card (4% restaurant, 3% airfare, 8 more categories). All of those recommended cards have no annual fee, no authorized user fee, and no foreign transaction fee.
