AMEX SimplyCash Plus Business Card
The American Express SimplyCash Plus Business Card is a great choice for any business looking to earn big on both office supply stores and wireless telephone services. Along with earning on those categories, the card allows you to pick one category out of a list of 8 in which you want to earn 3% cash back in. This can be extremely useful if you do not already have a business card that covers a specific category from the list. Cash back earned with the SimplyCash Plus is automatically applied to your account as a statement credit.
The SimplyCash Plus Business Card features 3 bonus categories which consist of office supply stores, wireless telephone providers, and your choice of one additional category from a list of 8. Those 8 categories consists of:
- Car Rentals
- Gas Stations (U.S.)
- Restaurants (U.S.)
- Advertising (U.S.)
- Shipping (U.S.)
- Computer Hard/Software and Cloud Computing (U.S.)
You will earn 5% cash back on the first $50,000 in combined purchases between office supply stores and wireless telephone providers and 3% cash back on the first $50,000 in spend on the chosen category. Any spending after the spending limit has been hit will earn 1% cash back for all purchases.
5% U.S. Office Supply Stores
The SimplyCash Plus Business Card earns 5% cash back on purchases made with U.S. office supply stores. This includes stores such as Office Max, Staples, and Office Depot. When it comes to earning cash back on this category, the SimplyCash Plus is one of the best choices next to the Chase Ink Business Cash Card which also earns 5% cash back at office supply stores and has no annual fee.
5% U.S. Wireless Telephone Services
The SimplyCash Plus Business Card earns 5% cash back on purchases made on U.S. wireless telephone services. This include purchases made within the U.S. from retailers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Again, this is tied with the highest earnings on this category with the Chase Ink Business Cash Card.
Airfare purchased with the SimplyCash Plus Business Card will earn 3% cash back if it is your chosen category (otherwise it will earn 1% cash back). Airfare must be purchased directly with from the airline and be for a scheduled flight on a passenger carrier. This category is not triggered by vacation packages, charter or private flights, or airfare purchases through a third party such as online travel agencies (e.g. Expedia, Orbitz).
American Express has several cards that feature airline as a bonus category, but the SimplyCash Plus Business Card is the only good cash back card for airfare and the only one with no annual fee. You can earn 5 Membership Rewards Points using the luxury American Express Business Platinum Card for airfare and hotel bookings through the AMEX travel portal. This is a 5% return or higher depending on how you use the points. While adding users will cost you, authorized users of the Business Platinum Card will also receive access to elite travel benefits.
Outside of AMEX, the best choice will be the Chase Ink Business Preferred Card. It earns 3 Ultimate Rewards Points on all travel purchases which covers airfare, hotels, car rentals, and other general travel purchases. It also features several additional categories that are featured on the SimplyCash including phone services, shipping, and advertising all at 3 points per $1 spent. 3 Ultimate Rewards Points earned with the Ink Business Preferred has a value of 1.25 cents each. If you're a Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholder, points will be worth 1.5 cents each.
Hotel reservations purchased directly through the hotel will earn 3% cash back if it is selected as your bonus category on the SimplyCash Plus Business Card. This is the only AMEX Card that will earn you cash back on bookings made directly with hotels. American Express Business Platinum Card will earn 5x on airfare and hotels purchased through the AMEX travel portal.
The Chase Ink Business Preferred Card earns 3 Ultimate Rewards points on travel purchases which could earn you at least a 3.75% return when using the points for travel on Chase's travel portal. If you don't mind earning airline frequent flyer miles, the Southwest Airlines Business Premier Airlines is another solid choice for travel purchases such as hotels.
Car rentals will earn 3% cash back if you select it as your bonus category for the SimplyCash Plus Business Card. Car rental agencies with American Express must be one of the following:
Any car rentals not in the list above will not be recognized by American Express as a major car rental company.
The Chase Ink Business Preferred remains a solid alternative to the SimplyCash Plus since it also earns 3 Ultimate Rewards Points on all travel purchases. You can also earn hotel points and airline miles using several co-branded travel cards that feature car rentals as a bonus category. This includes the Hilton Honors Business Card, both the AAdvantage Aviator Business and CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select American Airlines cards, and the Southwest Airlines Business Premier Card.
U.S. Gas Stations
Gas station purchases made on the SimplyCash Plus Business Card when selected as your chosen category will receive 3% cash back. Cash back earned for gas station purchases is pretty weak on business cards. In my opinion, if you spend a great deal on gas this is a great choice.
You can earn 3% cash back on gas using the Bank of America Business Advantage Cash Rewards Card as well. If you like hotel rewards points, the Hilton Honors Business Card is another great option as it earns 6 Hilton Honors Points per $1 on gas station purchases which is about a 3.6% return.
Restaurant purchases will earn 3% cash back if it is selected as your chosen category on the SimplyCash Plus Business Card. Dining and restaurants is another category that isn't too strong on business cards, though there are a few exceptions. The AMEX Business Gold Card earns 4x on the two select categories with the highest spend per month. With the exception of hotels and car rentals, the Business Gold features the same categories. Membership Rewards Points are valued at an easy 1 cent each but can be worth more when transferred and redeemed with travel partners.
If you or your business dabbles with Lowe's, the Lowes Business Card earns a 3% return on restaurant purchases and can be exchanged for Lowes Gift Cards. The Hilton Honors Business Card also offers a solid return on restaurant purchases earning a 6 Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent for an average 3.6% return.
Advertisement purchases made with the SimplyCash Plus Business Card will be eligible to receive 3% cash back if selected as your chosen category. This is one of the best values for advertisement purchases since you will receive a solid return of 3% without worrying about an annual fee.
The Chase Ink Business Card earns 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent for an easy return of 3.75% and the AMEX Business Gold Card can earn 4 Membership Rewards Points per $1 for an easy return of 4%. Both cards do have annual fees, so you will have to compare both cards to see which will earn the most overall.
Shipping purchases will earn 3% cash back if selected as your chosen category on the SimplyCash Plus Business Card. This includes merchants such as FedEx, UPS, and United States Postal Service. This is not a bad choice if you're looking to earn big on U.S. shipping. This is one of the best credit cards for shipping purchases.
U.S. Soft/Hardware & Cloud Computing
Software, hardware, and cloud computing purchases will earn 3% cash back when selected as your chosen category on the SimplyCash Plus Business Card. The only other card to feature this specific category is the AMEX Business Gold Card which can earn 4 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. Depending on how much you value points versus cash back and how much you spend across all the categories, either of these cards can be a good choice considering that software, hardware, and cloud computing can be expensive and rack up some big charges.
All non-category purchases as well as those categories not selected as a 3% cash back category will earn 1% cash back per $1 spent on the card. These type of purchases are better put on the 2% cash back AMEX Blue Business Cash Card.
Perks and Benefits
Spend Beyond Credit Limit
The primary benefit of the SimplyCash Business Card is that while it has a listed amount of available credit, you're able to spend beyond that like you can on the Blue Business Plus Card. This makes it feel similar to charge cards like the AMEX Platinum in which it feels like you have no personal spending limit. But unlike a charge card, you will only be required to pay the amount you spent above your credit limit, and the minimal payment that you receive as normal instead of the entire card balance. This gives you a little bit more flexibility.
Standard AMEX Benefits
The SimplyCash Business Card also features the standard AMEX benefits that come with their cards such as AMEX offers, car rental loss and damage protection, roadside assistance, baggage insurance, travel accident insurance, extended warranty and more.
Sign Up Bonus
The SimplyCash Plus Business Card does not have a standard sign up bonus. Cardholders will receive a 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 9 months.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The SimplyCash Plus Business Card does not have an annual fee. You will earn the maximum 5% and 3% return on the bonus categories offered on this card.
Authorized User Fee
There is no fee to add additional users to the SimplyCash Plus Business Card. This can be extremely helpful to build cash back faster in the several categories offered on this card without having to worry about extra fees for adding users.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The SimplyCash Plus Business Card has an authorized user fee of 2.7%. Using this card overseas would eat away at your earned cash back. I'd recommend sticking to using this card in the states since it earns mostly on U.S. purchases anyway.
You can use this rewards calculator to calculate how many points, miles, or cash back you can earn based on your spend per category. This calculator will also give you the dollar value of the card based on rewards earned and how much each benefit is worth to you minus the fees. You can click the Compare A Card button to compare this card against another card in the same calculator.
All category spend entered in the primary card's column will carry over to all credit card pages on the site so you don't have to re-enter the same information over again.
