Barclays Uber Visa Card (2020)
Calculate how much Uber Cash you can earn with the Barclays Uber Visa Card (2020) and compare the results side by side hundreds of rewards cards.
The Uber Visa Card has undergoing some changes in late 2019. The card has been restructured in a way that actually makes it good for those who use Uber. When it was first released, the card earned only 2% on Uber purchases, but earned a higher return on many other categories including 4% at restaurant and bars. On top of that, rewards could be redeemed as a statement credit or gift cards meaning you didn't have to use the rewards for Uber at all. Along with the Uber Visa having no annual fee, no authorized user fee, and no foreign transaction fee, it was one of the best cash back cards on the market.
With the current changes going into effect, anyone that was using the card for dining and redeeming rewards for statement credits and/or gift cards will probably be disappointed (I'm one of those people), but truthfully the changes to the card is to be expected as it is an 'Uber' credit card.
New cardmembers can apply now for the new Uber Card. Existing cardmembers will be converted to the new Uber Visa Card during the first half of 2020. Uber will contact current cardholders with an exact date (I received an email).
Bonus Categories
The Barclays Uber Visa Card features five bonus categories which are Uber, UberEATS, dining, hotels, and airfare. There is no limit to the amount of bonus Uber Cash you can earn spending in these categories and no limit to the amount of Uber Cash you can earn with the card overall.
5% Uber
The Barclays Uber Visa Card earns 5% Uber Cash on purchases made with Uber. That makes this card one of the best option for anyone that frequently uses Uber. Considering that Uber is worldwide and that this card has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, I recommend grabbing this card if you use Uber.
5% UberEATS
The Barclays Uber Visa Card earns 5% Uber Cash on UberEATS. UberEATS is Uber's food delivery service which is easily accessible using the UberEATS app. If you love to get food delivered, there's not too many cards offering a consistent 5% earning in this category. You may be able to score with the Discover IT or Chase Freedom from time to time, but if you're looking for unlimited 5% earnings this is the card to pick up.
5% JUMP
The Barclays Uber Visa Card earns 5% Uber Cash on JUMP rides. JUMP is Uber's electric bike share program. For anyone that uses this, earning 5% is quite a good return as electric bikes (and scooters) have become very popular.
3% Restaurant
The Barclays Uber Visa Card earns 3% Uber Cash on restaurant purchases. This will include your usual sit-down diners, fast food joints, fine dining establishments, and other merchants that code as restaurants. The original Uber Visa earned 4% cash back which means this is a slight drop, but it's still a solid return on restaurant purchases for a card with no annual fee.
3% Bars
The Barclays Uber Visa Card earns 3% Uber Cash on purchases made at bars. There are lots of people who use Uber to travel to/from the bar when out for a night on the town so this category goes hand-in-hand with this credit card. The Uber Visa previously earned 4% cash back on bar purchases, so this is a slight decrease.
3% Hotel
The Barclays Uber Visa Card earns 3% Uber Cash on hotel purchases. This is a great return for anyone that isn't loyal to a specific hotel brand. If you're loyal to a hotel (or two), you'll probably want to consider picking up a hotel credit card as you'll come out way farther ahead earning hotel loyalty points (along with hotel perks) rather than a flat 3%.
3% Airfare
The Barclays Uber Visa Card earns 3% Uber Cash on the purchase of airfare. While there are cards that can stretch a little farther than 3%, this isn't a bad return for a card with no annual fee. If you want one card to do it all (and don't mind earning Uber Cash), this is a solid choice.
1% Non-Category
All spending outside of the five bonus categories listed above will earn 1% Uber Cash. If you're strictly looking for Uber Cash, this is the only way you can earn cash on miscellaneous purchases. I'd recommend putting non-category spend on a flat rate 1.5% cash back or 2%+ cash back credit card.
This card no longer earns 2% cash back on online purchases or vacation home purchases. You will earn 1% cash back spending in these categories.
Perks and Benefits
The Barclays Uber Visa has one benefit which is cell phone insurance. The original Uber Visa featured a $50 subscription credit towards streaming services. The $50 credit will no longer be available on this card.
Cell Phone Insurance
The Uber Visa Card offers up to $600 for mobile phone damage or theft when you use the card to pay for your mobile phone bill. While you'll only earn 1% Uber Cash for this monthly bill, it can be useful for anyone that wants some protection for their phone.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for the Barclays Uber Visa Card is $100 in Uber Cash after spending $500 on purchases in the first 90 days. If you use Uber, this is not too shabby of a bonus.
Credit Card Fees
Fees | |
---|---|

Annual Fee
The Barclays Uber Visa Card has no annual fee. That means you'll always be earning a solid return when spending across the several bonus categories featured on the card.
Authorized User Fee
The Barclays Uber Visa has no authorized user fee. If you're looking to earn more Uber Cash, I recommend adding friends and family as additional users. There's no cap on any of the bonus categories, so extra spending across the card can really rake in the rewards.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The Barclays Uber Visa card has no foreign transaction fee which makes this card a solid option for those looking to earn Uber Cash on international travel/dining.
