Costco Anywhere Visa Card
The Costco Anywhere Visa is a cash back credit card offered by Citi Bank. It earns a significant amount of cash back on gas station purchases which also include Costo gas stations. It backs that up with spending categories focusing on travel, restaurants, and (of course) Costco purchases both in-store and online. One of the only drawbacks to this card is that the cash back earned with the card is offered annually during the month of Feburary similar to the Sams Club Mastercard. Even still, this is an excellent choice when it comes to earning cash back for road warriors.
The Costco Anywhere Visa features 4 bonus categories which are gas stations, restaurants, general travel purchases, and Costco Warehouses (as well as Costco.com). Purchases in these categories will earn you additional cash back. There is a limit of $7,000 per year on the gas station category in which any purchases over that will earn cash back at the non-category rate of 1% per $1 spent. The remaining categories do not have a cap. There is no limit to the amount of cash back you can earn with the Costco Anywhere Visa. Below are the details on the bonus categories.
4% Gas Station
Gas Station purchases on the Costco Anywhere Visa will earn 4% cash back per $1 spent. This includes Costco gas stations. This is one of the top cash back cards for gas station purchases. This bonus is capped at $7,000 per year or about $583 per month meaning you can earn up to $280 cash back at the rate of 4% cash back. The PNC Cash Rewards Card earns the same 4% cash back, but it has a cap of $8,000 a year which can earn you $320 cash back, but that's only if you avoid using the card for restaurants and grocery stores which pulls from that same cap. The Costco Anywhere Visa is beatable by a 3% cash back card (with no annual fee) once you break $10,500 in gas spending per year or $875 per month.
General travel purchases made on the Costco Anywhere Visa will earn 3% cash back per $1 spent. This is a solid return for a category as broad as 'travel'. Citi usually includes these kind of purchases to be:
- Car rental agencies
- Travel agencies/travel aggregators/tour operators
- Gas stations, commuter transportation
- Commuter railways
- Taxis/limousines/car services
- Passenger railways
- Cruise lines
- Bridge and road tolls
- Parking lots/garages
- Campgrounds and trailer parks
- Bus lines
- Motor home/recreational vehicle rentals
- Boat leases and rentals
While there are lots of great rewards cards that focus on the category of travel like the Citi ThankYou Premier Card and luxury Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, there are not many cash back cards that focus on this category. That alone makes this card stand out since you know that you will get a solid 3% cash back for all purchases.
If you love food, the Costco Anywhere Visa will earn you 3% cash back per $1 on restaurant purchases. This includes both fast food and fine dining establishments. For a card to offer such a high return on gas station purchases, the great earning rate of restaurants makes this card a solid option for someone who wants all their cash back in one place. If you're looking for cards that earn a little more for restaurants, the Barclay Uber Card offers 4% cash back on resturants and features 9 other bonus categories. What's best is that cash back earned with the Uber Card doesn't have to be used for Uber. It can be used for gift cards and statement credits which, in my opinion, makes it one of the best reward cards in the market.
Using the Costo Anywhere Visa Card at Costco Warehouses and on Costco.com will earn 2% cash back per $1 spent. Since Costco is a warehouse store, this is about the best return you will get on Costco purchases unless you're using a card that earns a higher return on general cash back like the Allian CashBack Visa Signature Card. If you have a Costco membership, this is the card to have when it comes to shopping in-store or online at their stores.
Any purchases on the Costco Anywhere Visa outside of the categories listed above will earn 1% cash back per $1 spent. This is a relatively low rate that should be avoided when possible. Citi offers the Citi Double Cash Card which offers 2% cash back on all purchases with no cap. This card can be used for any of the categories not features on the Costco Anywhere Visa to ensure that you will always earn at least 2% cash back per $1 spent.
Perks and Benefits
The Costco Anywhere Visa features standard Visa benefits such as damage & theft protection, extended warranty, and travel protection. Besides being able to use your card as your Costco Membership ID, there are no perks & benefits specific to Costco besides the extra earning on spending at their warehouses.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
While the Costco Anywhere Visa does not have an annual fee, it does require a paid Costco Membership which has a cost of $60 for basic. If you already a Costco Membership, adding this card to your wallet would be worthwhile for the extra return on shopping with them.
Authorized User Fee
There is no authroized user fee for the Costco Anywhere Visa. If you have friends or family that spend in these bonus categories, I recommend adding them as additional users in order to build cash back at a faster rate!
Foreign Transaction Fee
There is no foreign transaction fee for the Costco Anywhere Visa which is great considering it features a 3% earning on travel. That makes this a great choice for an international travel card since VISA is widely accepted worldwide!
