The Blue Cash Everyday Card and Cash Magnet Card are both cash back credit cards offered by American Express. The Blue Cash Everyday offers higher cash back on supermarket, department store, and gas station purchases while the Cash Magnet offers a flat return on all purchases. When it comes to these two AMEX cash back cards, one card excels in earning higher cash back where the other card does not. The Blue Cash Everyday Card is good for the three categories mentioned above while the Cash Magnet Card is good for all other purchases. This means both card compliment each other and you would be best getting both to ensure that you never earn less than 1.5% cash back for any purchase.

I will cover the details of the Blue Cash Everyday and Cash Magnet Card including the earning structure, perks & benefits, sign up bonus, and fees. The Blue Cash Everyday versus Cash Magnet Card Cash Back Calculator will calculate the total amount of cash back you can earned based on your spend.

AMEX Cash Back

Both the Blue Cash Everyday and Cash Magnet cards earns cash back under the American Express umbrella. Cash back earned with American Express can be applied to the statement, used to purchase gift cards, or used to shop in the American Express website for name brand merchandise. You must have at least $25 in cash rewards to start redeeming your cash back.

Bonus Categories

The Blue Cash Everyday and Cash Magnet Cards have different earning structures. The Blue Cash Everyday focuses on grocery, department store, and gas station purchases while the Cash Magnet Card earns the same flat rate of cash back for all purchases. Below is a breakdown of how much cash back each American Express card can earn you.

Supermarket

Supermarket Earnings
Blue Cash Everyday Cash Magnet
3% Cash Back 1.5% Cash Back

The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card earns 3% cash back on the first $6,000 in supermarket purchases for the year. After you hit that $6,000 limit, you will earn 1% cash back for the remainder of the year. The AMEX Cash Magnet Card earns 1.5% cash back for all purchases and does not have a cap. If you spend around $6,000 a year or $500 a month in groceries, the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday will be the winner and earn double the amount of cash back the AMEX Cash Magnet Card brings in. Since the AMEX Cash Magnet Card earns a higher rate of return after the $6,000 limit has been hit on the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday, you will come out ahead on the AMEX Cash Magnet if you spend more than $2,000 per month or $24,000 a year on supermarket charges.

If you spend more than $265 per month or $3,180 per year, the Blue Cash Preferred will be the better option over the Blue Cash Everyday. When you compare the Blue Cash Everyday versus Blue Cash Preferred you will see that the Everyday earns 3% while the Preferred earns 6%. The Blue Cash Preferred also has a higher rate of return for both department store and gas station purchases. Both Blue Cash Cards are considered the top options for grocery store purchases with the AMEX Everyday and AMEX Everyday Preferred also being in the top tier depending on how much Membership Rewards Points are worth to you. You also have cards that focus on quarterly rotating categories which include both the DiscoverIT Card and Chase Freedom.

Do note that stores such as Walmart, Sam's Club, and Target does not fall under the supermarket umbrella for American Express. While the Cash Magnet Card will still earn 1.5% cash back at these stores, the Blue Cash Everyday will only earn 1% cash back per $1 spent. The Walmart Mastercard, Sam's Club Mastercard, and Target Red Card would be better options if you shop at these stores.

Department Stores

Department Store Earnings
Blue Cash Everyday Cash Magnet
2% Cash Back 1.5% Cash Back

The Blue Cash Everyday earns 2% cash back per $1 spent at department stores. AMEX has a specific list of department stores that are included in this category. They are:

  • Bealls
  • Belk
  • Bloomingdale's
  • Bon Ton Stores
  • Boscov's
  • Century 21 Department Stores
  • Dillard's
  • J.C. Penney (JCP)
  • Kohl's
  • Lord & Taylor
  • Macy's
  • Neiman Marcus
  • Nordstrom
  • Saks Fifth Avenue
  • Sears
  • Stein Mart

Department stores not included in the list above will not earn extra cash back with the Blue Cash Everyday and will earn the non-category rate of 1% cash back per $1 spent. The AMEX Cash Magnet Card will earn 1.5% for all purchases regardless of whether or not they're in the above list. There is no cap on either card when it comes to earning cash back for department store purchases, so the Blue Cash Everyday Card will always come out ahead.

There's not many cards that focus on the category of department stores. Most mainstream stores usually have their own co-branded store credit card that earns better cash back than most standard cards such as the JCPenney Credit Card or Macy's AMEX. Store cards typically offers special savings and benefits as well. If you shop at any of the above stores a lot, you will want to make sure that their store card wouldn't be more beneficial to your spending habits.

Gas Station

Gas Station Earnings
Blue Cash Everyday Cash Magnet
2% Cash Back 1.5% Cash Back

The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card earns 2% cash back per $1 spent at gas stations. As with all purchases, the AMEX Cash Magnet Card will earn 1.5% cash back for all purchases. Again, there is no cap on this bonus category so the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday Card will be the winning choice here. This category applies to U.S. gas stations only, but since both cards have a foreign transaction fee, this card should not be used outside of the United States anyway.

When it comes to gas station purchases, there are a lot of cards that earn a higher rate of return. This consists of the Blue Cash Preferred Card which earns 3% cash back and is the better choice in the supermarket category if you spend more than $265 a month. If you're looking for cards that focus specifically on cash back on the gas station category, the Sam's Club Mastercard earns 5% cash back on gas station purchases and the PNC Cash Rewards Card earns 4% cash back. Military members also have the chance to pick up the USAA CashBack Rewards Plus Card which earns 5% cash back on gas station purchases.

Non-Category

Non-Category Earnings
Blue Cash Everyday Cash Magnet
1% Cash Back 1.5% Cash Back

The Blue Cash Everyday will earn 1% cash back per $1 spent on all purchases outside of the bonus categories listed above. The AMEX Cash Magnet Card will continue to earn 1.5% cash back per $1 spent making it the winner for all other categories. This is one of the main reasons why both cards compliment each other. Owning both the Blue Cash Everyday and Cash Magnet Card will allow you maximize your cash back with AMEX (assuming the Blue Cash Preferred isn't the better choice). Use the Blue Cash Preferred to earn between 2% and 3% on its bonus categories and use the Cash Magnet Card to earn 1.5% on everything else. It's the ultimate AMEX cash back combination!

Perks and Benefits

Both the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday and AMEX Cash Magnet Card do not have any special perks outside of the standard AMEX benefits that come with the cards. This AMEX benefits include AMEX offers, roadside assistance, travel accident insurance, extended warranty, shoprunner membership, return protection, and more.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard sign up bonus for the Blue Cash Everyday is $150 after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new card in your first 3 months. A higher sign up bonus of around $200 can sometimes be obtained using incognito/private browsing. The Cash Magnet Card has a welcome sign up bonus of $200 cash back after spending $1,000 in purchases during your first 3 months. This puts both sign up bonuses at about an equal playing field.

Credit Card Fees

Fees At A Glance - -
Annual Fee - -
Authorized User Fee - -
Foreign Transaction Fee - -

Annual Fees

The annual fee for both the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday and AMEX Cash Magnet Card is $0. This means that you will always be able to maximize your earnings on both cards and come out positive without having to worrying about spending enough to overcome any fees.

Authorized User Fees

There is no authorized user fee for the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday or AMEX Cash Magnet Card. I recommend adding additional family and friends to either (or both) cards in order to earn cash back at a faster rate.

Foreign Transaction Fees

Both the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday and AMEX Cash Magnet have a foreign transaction fee of 2.7%. That makes both of these cards terrible for international purchases. If you're looking for an international travel card, AMEX is not going to be your best bet. You will want to go with a VISA or Mastercard such as the Barclay Uber Card or a good combination of Capital One Cards such as the Savor One and Quicksilver combo which is identical to the Blue Cash Everyday and Cash Magnet combo, but without the foreign transaction fees.
