If you're looking to earn Wyndham Rewards Points, the Wyndham Rewards Platinum is the best card to do it. It offers 5x on Wyndham Properties, Wyndham Platinum status which comes with bonus points & upgrades, and offers an annual bonus that just about wipes out the annual fee making the no-annual fee Wyndham Rewards Gold Card almost pointless.

Bonus Categories

The Wyndham Rewards Platinum features four bonus categories which are Wyndham purchases, gas stations, utilities, and grocery stores. Using the card in any of these categories will earn bonus Wyndham Rewards Points. There is no limit to the amount of Wyndham Rewards Points you can earn spending in these categories.

5x Wyndham Purchases

The Wyndham Rewards Platinum earns 5 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 on Wyndham purchases. This includes Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, North American vacation properties, on-property spend, and maintenance fees for timeshare properties. This is equal to a great 6% return and is best return you can get when it comes to earning Wyndham Rewards Points. The Hilton Honors Surpass (7.2% return) and the Hilton Honors Aspire (8.4% return) also offers high returns on their own properties as well.

5x La Quinta Inn

Thanks to the partnership between Wyndham and La Quinta, the Wyndham Rewards Platinum earns 5 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent at La Quinta brand hotels. This is a great plus for anyone that stays at La Quinta Inn that still wants to earn Wyndham Rewards Points. Just remember that both programs aren't yet merged entirely and that La Quinta properties are not qualified stays and therefore do not yet earn Wyndham Rewards points with the Wyndham Rewards Loyalty Program. So while you will earn Wyndham Rewards Points using the card, you will earn La Quinta Returns Points for the actual stay.

2x Gas Station

Gas station purchases on the Wyndham Rewards Gold will earn 2 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent. This 2x bonus will only apply to merchants that primarily specialize in the selling of gasoline. Exxon, Hess, BP, and Speedway are examples of eligible gas stations. Using this card for gas purchases will produce a 2.4% return which is okay if you're looking to earn Wyndham Rewards Points, but it can be outdone by a few no-annual fee cash back cards such as the PNC Cash Rewards Card (4% cash back) and the Bank of America Cash Rewards Card (3% cash back). Earning on those cards could earn you a Wyndham Rewards nights faster by redeeming the cash back earned towards Wyndham purchases.

2x Utility

Using the Wyndham Rewards Gold to pay utility bills will earn 2 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent. This includes bills such as gas, water, and electric. This is an uncommon category in the credit card world so you will not easily find a better return. If you're looking to earn Wyndham Rewards Points, this is a good category to use the card for.

2x Grocery

Grocery shopping with the Wyndham Rewards Gold will earn 2 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent. This includes grocery stores and supermarkets such as Vons, Winn Dixie, Publix, and Kroger. Stores such as Target and Walmart are not eligible to receive double Wyndham Rewards Points.

A 2.4% return isn't bad, but it can be slightly approved on with the AMEX Blue Cash Everyday which earns 3% cash back. If you spend a high amount in groceries per month ($300-$500) and don't mind paying an annual fee, the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred will earn you 6% cash back.

1x Non Category

Any spend that does not fall within the categories above will earn 1 Wyndham Rewards Points per $1 spent. This is a low return of 1.2% which can be out performed by any 1.5% or higher cash back cards. The Citi Double Cash (2% cash back) and Chase Freedom Unlimited (1.5% cash back) are some good choices for non-category spend.

Perks and Benefits

Wyndham Rewards Platinum Status

Wyndham Rewards Platinum card holders will receive complimentary Wyndham Rewards Platinum Status. This is usually obtained by staying 15 nights at Wyndham Properties. It offers perks such as early check-in, a 3,000 Wyndham Point bonus, and upgrades with both Avis and Budget rental car companies. Other reward cards similar this one that offers elite status consist of the Hilton Surpass Card (Hilton Gold) and World of Hyatt Card (Hyatt Discoverist).

6,000 Bonus Wyndham Points

A bonus of 6,000 Wyndham Points will be given to Wyndham Rewards Platinum card holders annually on the card anniversary. At a rate of 1.2 cents per Wyndham Rewards Point, this is equal to $72 which almost wipes out the $75 annual fee this card has and makes the no-annual fee Wyndham Rewards Gold pointless to pick up. Another reward card that behaves similarly is the Radisson Rewards Premier Visa which offers an annual bonus so high that it makes all the other Radisson Credit Cards under it useless.

Sign Up Bonus

The Wyndham Rewards Platinum sign up bonus is 15,000 Wyndham Points after the first purchase. An additional 15,000 Wyndham Rewards Points can be earned after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 90 days of account opening. This is a total sign up bonus of 30,000 points which is worth $360. That's not a bad bonus for a spend goal of only $1,000.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Wyndham Rewards Platinum is $75. The annual 6,000 bonus points this card receives annually wipes out the majority of this fee.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee associated with adding authorized users to the Wyndham Rewards Platinum. If you have friends or family that put frequent spend in these bonus categories, I would recommend adding them.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Wyndham Rewards Platinum does not have a foreign transaction fee. This means purchases outside of the United States will still earn positive return and you will not be penalized for these purchases.
