Fixed Points Travel Redemptions
AMEX Points can be redeemed for eligible flights online with the Fixed Points Travel Program which will give your AMEX Points between 1.5 and 2 cents in value. The Fixed points Travel Program takes the guess work out of trying to find out how many points you'll need to fly from point A to point B by assigning set redemption values. The plus to this program is that you can:
- Book any airline, fly anywhere, and travel any day of the year
- Book up to a day before departure
- Book economy or business class flights
- Book direct flights
- Enjoy the travel benefits that comes with your AMEX card
So no matter the flight availability, time of year, or peak/off-peak season, the flight will always cost the same. Listed below is what you can expect to pay using the Fixed Points Travel Program.

Flexible Points Travel Program
The AMEX Flexible Points Travel Program allows you to redeem 1,000 AMEX Points for $10 in travel credit which will give your points a value of 1 cent each. These credits can be applied towards new travel purchases, including taxes, surcharges and fees booked through the American Express Travel Services or americanexpress.ca/travel. This can be a great option if a redemption using Fixed Point Travel gives you less than 1 cent in value or you want to get great value out of travel for something that's not flight related.
Amazon Shop With Points
AMEX Points can be used to shop on Amazon.com. This will give your points a set value of 0.7 cents per point which isn't bad, but still lower than what you can obtain from redeeming your points for travel. Applying a few points to shave off some cost of your Amazon.ca purchase is fine, but I recommend saving your points for travel or picking up the MBNA Amazon Credit Card which earns a great amount of cash back with Amazon, Whole Foods Market Stores, and more.
You can redeem your AMEX Points for merchandise in the 'Shop' portion of the American Express Membership Rewards Portal. This value of your AMEX Points will vary, but I found most redemptions to land between 0.4 and 0.6 cents per point. I'm sure there's some hidden gems found in the shop, but you'll typically want to avoid using points for merchandise. If you're looking to earn rewards that give you great value when it comes to shopping, you'll want to focus on cash back credit cards or store credit cards with your favorite retailer(s).
AMEX Points can be redeemed for a little over 30 different gift cards. The majority of these redemptions will give your AMEX Points a value of 0.769 cents per point. The denominations available for each gift card will vary, but most start at 3,250 points for a $25 gift card. Gift card options include, but are not limited to:
- Air Canada
- Birks Business
- Esso and Mobil
- Fairmont Hotels & Resorts
- Hudson's Bay
- Indigo Books and Music
- Gap Inc.
- Saks Fifth Avenue
- The Home Depot
- TJX Canada
AMEX Points can be donated to Save the Children which gives your points a value of 1 cent each. Donations start at 1,000 AMEX Points for a $10 donation.
Use Points For Purchases
You can use your AMEX Points towards eligible purchases charged to your Membership Rewards credit card which will give your points a value of 0.7 cents per point. This means that every 1,000 AMEX Points you redeem towards purchases will give you a $7 statement credit. It can be useful if you really need to pay something off (e.g. to avoid interest), but you'll want to stick to using cash back credit cards if you're big on redeeming rewards towards card purchases.
Overall, you can get a lot of value out of the American Express Membership Rewards Program if you're redeeming your points for travel. With cards like the American Express Cobalt, you can easily build up your rewards on everyday spend and be on your way to redeeming your points for flights around the globe.
If you're trying to find the best AMEX Membership Rewards Credit Card based on your spend, I recommend using the AMEX Points Credit Card Calculators to calculate the cash value of each card based on your spend, how much the benefits are worth to you, and the annual fees. You can then compare those results side by side top cards!
Also, don't forget that AMEX Points can be transferred to airline and hotel partners. You can use the AMEX Points Transfer Calculator on the AMEX Points Calculator page to calculate the transfer of AMEX Points to their airline and hotel partners.
