AMEX Cobalt Card
The AMEX Cobalt is a Membership Rewards Point earning carded offered by the AMEX Bank of Canada. It's a great well rounded card that can easily help rake up points on travel and dining.
The AMEX Cobalt features several categories but most of the category overlap and intersect with one another. This can be summed up with five main categories which are grocery shopping, dining, travel, transit, and gas station purchases. The grocery and dining category has a yearly max of $30,000 per year while the remaining categories have no cap. There is no limit to the amount of Membership Rewards Points you can earn with the card.
The AMEX Cobalt card earns 5 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent at grocery stores. These apply to stand-alone grocery stores in Canada. This category has a combined max with the dining category of $30,000 in spend per year. After hitting that max, you will only earn 1 Membership Rewards Point per $1 spent on grocery and dining purchases.
The AMEX Cobalt card earns 5 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent on dining out. This includes restaurants, fast food, bars, cafés, and food delivery in Canada. This category shares it's $30,000 bonus max with grocery. Once you hit that max, both 5x categories will earn 1 Membership Rewards Point per $1 spent.
Using the AMEX Cobalt on travel purchases will earn 2 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. This includes travel services or travel booking including airfare, cruises, rail, and road transportation.
The AMEX Cobalt Card earns 2 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent on transit. This includes local commuter transportation in Canada including subway, streetcar, taxi, limousine, and ride sharing services.
2x Gas Station
Gas station purchases with the AMEX Cobalt Card will earn 2 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. This is for stand-alone automobile gas stations in Canada.
All purchases on the AMEX Cobalt Card outside of the categories listed above will earn 1 Membership Reward Point per $1 spent.

The Hotel Collection
AMEX Cobalt Cardholders will receive access to The Hotel Collection from American Express. This offers a $100 USD hotel credit on charges to the room such as dining, spa, and golf as well as complimentary room upgrades at check-in when available. A minimum of two consecutive nights must be booked on the American Express Travel using an American Express card.

Sign Up Bonus
New American Express Cobalt Cardholders can earn up to 30,000 Membership Rewards Points during the first year. Members will earn 2,500 points for each monthly billing period in which they spend $500 in purchases on the card.

The annual fee for the AMEX Cobalt Card is $10 per month charged on the 1st statement after the card is issued and once a month thereafter.
Authorized User Fee
There is no authorized user fee for the AMEX Cobalt Card.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The charge for making foreign purchases on the AMEX Cobalt Card is 2.5% of each charge. That makes this card not the best choice for purchases in which you cannot pay in CAD.
