AMEX Membership Rewards Points Value

How much are Membership Rewards points earned with AMEX UK worth? The answer: 0.4 to 0.5p when redeemed with AMEX and anywhere from 0.5p to 2p or more when transferred to AMEX's airline and hotel partners. This means that 10,000 AMEX points can be worth as little as £40 and as much as £200 depending on how you use them.

Here's our full valuations for AMEX UK Membership Rewards points:

How to calculate the value of AMEX points

The value you get out of your Membership Rewards points when redeeming them directly with AMEX are pretty much set in stone, but the value you get when transferring points to AMEX's airline and hotel partners will heavily vary.

You can calculate the value of your Membership Rewards points by dividing the cash cost of a redemption by the number of points required.

AMEX Points Value = Cash Cost of Redemption ÷ Points Required.

For example, if you were to transfer 80,000 Membership Rewards points to one of AMEX's airline partners to redeem them for a £1,200 flight, your points would be worth 1.5p each. This is because £1,200 divided by 80,000 points is £0.015.

If you need to calculate the value of a redemption, use our Membership Rewards Points Redemption Value Calculator.

Redeeming AMEX points for the best value

You will get the best value out of Membership Rewards points when transferring them to AMEX's airline and hotel partners. All other redemptions will give your points standard or lower value.

AMEX point transfers to partners

Membership Rewards Points can be transferred to 15 partners. Most transfers are 1:1 meaning that for every 1,000 points you transfer, you'll get 1,000 airline miles, hotel points, or rail rewards points.

AMEX airline partners

Transferring AMEX Points to airline partners will give your points the best value since 1 airline mile with most of AMEX's partners can be worth anywhere from 1p to 2p on average depending on the redemption.

Economy flights with most of AMEX's airline partners will land your points in the 0.5p to 1.3p area while upper class redemptions can give you as much as 2p per point.

For example, you can transfer points to Singapore Airlines to fly in the ever-so-popular Singapore Suites or take advantage of Qatar's QSuites in the sky. These types of redemptions will easily give your points 2p to 4p in value if you can find availability and have a good amount of points.

AMEX hotel partners

Membership Rewards points can be transferred to 3 hotel partners: Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, and Radisson Rewards. Thanks to the higher than normal transfer ratios for these partners, transferring points to each of these partners can yield good to great value.

Here are the transfer ratios for each hotel partner:

  • 1 Membership Rewards point = 2 Hilton Honors points
  • 2 Membership Rewards points = 3 Marriott Bonvoy points
  • 1 Membership Rewards point = 3 Radisson Rewards points

Marriott's sweet spots are typically in the low category hotels and high-end hotels. You'll also find great value booking stays at popular destinations and resorts (e.g. beaches, resorts, Maldives, Bora Bora).

For Hilton, you'll find great value at their high-end resorts in which they have many in popular destinations around the globe.

Another big benefit of Marriott and Hilton is that they offer the ability to get your fifth award night free when booking a consecutive stay of 5 days or more. Marriott offers this perk to all Marriott Bonvoy members while Hilton requires you to at least have Hilton Honors Silver status.

Redeeming AMEX points for gift cards

Membership Rewards Points can be redeemed for a wide variety of gift cards starting as low as 1,000 points for a £5 gift card. This will give your points a value of 0.5p each.

The denominations available for each gift card option will vary. Do note that some gift cards start at £25 or £50 denominations.

Gift card denomination Cost in points
£5 1,000 points
£10 2,000 points
£20 4,000 points
£25 5,000 points
£50 10,000 points
£100 20,000 points
£150 30,000 points
£200 40,000 points
£250 50,000 points
£300 60,000 points
£500 100,000 points
£1,000 200,000 points
£2,500 500,000 points

Shop with points

American Express Membership Rewards Points can be used to pay for purchases at over 50 brands such as Amazon, Sainsbury's, and Boots. Every 1,000 points you redeem is will be equal to £4.50 with most Shop with points partners which will give your points a value of 0.45p each.

If you're not in a rush to checkout, I recommend going for the gift card option as you'll be able to get a slightly better value of 0.5p per point.

Use AMEX points for card charges

American Express Membership Rewards Points can be used to pay for eligible purchases made to an AMEX credit card. This pretty much behaves like a 'cash back' option in which you'll get £0.004 per point.

This is the worst redemption option for Membership Rewards points. If you're looking to earn cash back, American Express offers the Platinum Cashback Credit Card and Platinum Cashback Everyday Credit Card which will earn you cash back at a significantly better rate across your purchases.
