One of the newest editions to the AAdvantage Credit Card family is the Citi AAdvantage MileUp Card. This no-annual fee card provides a few great perks that could be worthwhile to anyone that flies American Airlines even once. It's a great way to build miles without worry about a fee. It's in direct competition with cards such as the Delta Blue Card which has a similar stucture.

Bonus Categories

The AAdvantage MileUp Card features 2 bonus categories. Extra AAdvantage Miles are earned on both American Airlines and grocery store purchases. There's no limit to the amount of miles you can earn using this card.

2x American Airlines

The Citi AAdvantage MileUp Card earns 2 AAdvantage Miles on American Airline purchases. Eligible American Airline purchases are items billed by American Airlines as merchant of record booked through American Airlines channels such as, American Airlines reservations, and American Airlines airport and city ticket counters.

All of the American Airline AAdvantage credit cards, except for the Gold Card, earns double miles on AA purchases. Since AA does not have any direct transfer partners, this is the best way to accumulate AAdvantage Miles when it comes to card spend. The best card will be determined by the Perks & Benefits that you find are most useful to you with any of the AAdvantage Cards.

2x Grocery

The AAdvantage MileUp Card also earns 2 AAdvantage Miles at grocery stores. Grocery stores purchases are defined by merchants that are coded as grocery or supermarket. This will be places such as Kroger, Meijer, Winn-Dixie, and Giant Eagle.

The AAdvantage MileUp Card is the only AAdvantage card that features the grocery/supermarket category, so by default this this will be the highest amount of AAdvantage Miles you can earn when it comes to these type of purchases.

1x Non-Category

All purchases outside of the categories listed above will earn 1 AAdvantage Mile per $1 spent. This is the best you will get in the terms of earning AAdvantage Miles since they don't have any direct transfer partners. Overall, a better return on non-category purchases can be earned in the form of cash back with cards such as the Citi Double Cash Card or reward points with cards such as the Blue Business Plus Card.

Perks & Benefits

25% In-flight Savings

The AAdvantage MileUp Card features the standard 25% in-flight savings on purchases of food and beverages on flights operated by American Airlines when purchased with their Citi AAdvantage card. Savings do not apply to any other in-flight purchases, such as wireless internet access.

Sign Up Bonus (SUB)

The AAdvantage MileUp card sign up bonus is 10,000 bonus miles and a $50 statement credit after spending $500 within the first three months of opening the account. 10,000 AAdvantage Miles are worth about $140 but can be worth a lot more depending on redemption.

Annual Fee

The Citi AAdvantage MileUp Card does not have an annual fee. This means you'll always come out ahead when earning AAdvantage Miles.

Authorized User Fee

The MileUp Card does not have a fee associated with adding additional users. This allows you to add friends and family without worrying about losing rewards. Authorized users of the MileUp card will be able to assist in earning AAdvantage Miles on card purchases. They will also be able to earn 25% off in-flight savings since it's applied to the card account directly.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Citi AAdvantage MileUp Card has a foreign transaction fee of 3%. The bonus categories aren't high enough to compete with that fee, so using this card overseas will greatly decrease your overall return and AAdvantage Miles. The MileUp and Citi Gold are the only two AAdvantage Cards with foreign transaction fees. If you're looking for an American Airlines card to use overseas, start with the Barclay AAdvantage Aviator Red or Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select cards.
