Review the benefits of the CitiBusiness Advantage Card, calculate how many AAdvantage Miles you can earn based on your spend, and compare against top cards.

The CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Card offers a good amount of AAdvantage Miles on several bonus categories that focus on business and flights with American Airlines. For anyone that wants great benefits that mirror having AAdvantage Status, this is a good card to pick up.

Bonus Categories

The CitiBusiness American Airlines Platinum Select Mastercard features 5 bonus categories that earn extra AA AAdvantage Miles. Those categories are: American Airlines, telecommunications, cable and satellite providers, rental car agencies, and gas stations. There is no limit to the amount of AAdvantage Miles you can earn spending on this card and none of the categories have a cap on earnings. Below is a detailed explanation of each bonus category featured on the CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card.

2x American Airlines

Using the CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card for American Airline purchases will earn 2 AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent. Eligible American Airlines purchases are items billed by American Airlines as merchant of record booked through American Airlines channels such as, American Airlines reservations, and American Airlines airport and city ticket counters. Purchases of American Airlines airfare and services through third party providers will not earn you the 2x bonus.

All of the Citi and Barclay American Airlines co-branded credit cards earn double miles on American Airline purchases with the exception of the AA Gold Card which earns 1 mile. Earning 2x miles with a co-branded card is the norm. The Delta Business Cards and United Business Cards earn double miles on there respective airlines. If you're looking to earn a little more than the norm and get to award travel faster, bank reward programs such as American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards can assist in that.

2x Telecommunications

Telecommunication purchases ran through the CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card will earn 2 AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent. Telecommunications merchants are defined as merchants that sell telecommunications equipment such as telephones, fax machines, pagers, and cellular phones, along with providers of telecommunications services including local and long–distance telephone calls and fax services.

The CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card is the only card that focuses on various phone services. The Barclay Aviator Business Card focuses specifically on Wireless Telephone Purchases in which it earns double AAdvantage Miles for. You can also earn reward points on various other travel cards for purchases in this category including 5% cash back with the Chase Ink Business Cash Card and 3x Ultimate Rewards Points with the Chase Ink Business Preferred Card.

2x Car Rental

The CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card earns 2 AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent when it used at rental car agencies. Car rental merchants are defined as providers of short–term or long–term rentals of cars, trucks, or vans. This does not include merchants that rent motor homes or other recreational vehicles. Purchases made through travel agencies, tour operators and online third party travel sites are not eligible.

Earning double AA miles on rental cars is not bad. With AAdvantage Miles being worth 1.4 cents each on average, you're looking at a 2.8% return. The Barclay AAdvantage Aviator Business Card also earns double AA miles on this bonus category. Other business cards that offer bonus points and miles for rental car purchases consist of the Hilton Honors Business Card (6x Hilton Honors Points) and Southwest Airlines Business Premier Card (2x Rapid Rewards Points).

2x Cable and Satellite

Cable and satellite charges on the CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card will earn 2 AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent. Citi counts these charges as merchants that provide the connection and ongoing delivery of television, internet (computer network, information services, email website hosting services) telephone and radio programming via cable or satellite on a subscription or fee basis.

The CitiBusiness Platinum Select is one of the rare business airline cards that earn miles on this category. At a rate of 1.4 cents per AAdvantage Mile, you have a return of at least 2.8%. This can be improved upon by using several Chase Bank cards which includes the Chase Ink Business Cash Card (5% cash back), Chase Ink Business Preferred (3x Ultimate Rewards Points), and Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Card (4x Marriott Bonvoy Points).

2x Gas Stations

Using the CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card at gas stations will earn 2 AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent. Gas Stations are classified as merchants that sell fuel primarily for consumer use and may or may not be attended. Purchases not eligible to receive double miles include, but are not limited to, purchases made at warehouse clubs, discount stores, department stores and convenience stores.

There is not a shortage of business cards that feature bonus categories on gas station purchases. While earning double AA miles is not bad for anyone looking to push towards award flights with American Airlines, a better return can be received from using various reward cards. These cards consist of the Bank of America Business Advantage Cash Rewards Mastercard (3% cash back), AMEX Business Rewards Gold Card (Up to 3x Membership Reward Points), and Hilton Honors Business Card (6x Hilton Honors Points).

1x Non-Category

Any spending on the CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card outside of the categories listed above will earn 1 AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent. Since AAdvantage Miles offer a return of 1.4% per mile, this isn't a bad card to put non-category spend on if you're focusing AAdvantage Miles. You pick up a few extra categories using other AAdvantage Cards. Whether it is worth having more than one, would be based on your spend. The Citi MileUp Card earns double miles on grocery, the Barclay AAdvantage Business Card features the same categories as this card except it swaps gas stations with office supply stores and specifically focuses on wireless telephone providers instead of telecommunications as a whole, and the Citi Platinum Select (which is the personal version of this business card) offers 2x on restaurants. Be sure to focus on the card(s) that you run the most spend on.

The standard CitiBusiness AA Platinum Select Mastercard sign up bonus is usually around 50,000 American Airlines miles but can be as high as 70,000 AAdvantage Miles during promotions. At a value of 1.4 cents per mile, you're looking at an average sign up bonus between $700 and $980. You can also check out AA's Flight Award Chart to see how far those miles can get you when it comes to flying AA and partners.

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Card is $0 the first year, then $99. This is around the standard for entry level co-branded cards of any kind. If you frequently fly American Airlines then this fee shouldn't be too much of a problem to overcome. On top of that, the annual companion pass should easily cover this fee when it comes to cash value even with the taxes and fees.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee to add authorized users to the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Card. This lets you add employees, friends, or family without any kind of extra charge. Since this CitiBusiness card features several great categories, I'd recommend adding additional users in order to help build AAdvantage Miles faster.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The foreign transaction fee for the CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Card is 0% meaning cardholders will not be penalized for using the card outside of the United States. This lets you earn AAdvantage Miles worldwide.
