Gas, general travel, and dining purchases are amongst the most commonly seen bonus categories featured on top rewards cards. It's relatively easy to earn a great return across all three categories with a single card or with different card combinations.

If you value Membership Rewards Points, the AMEX Green and AMEX Everyday Preferred combination is amongst the best for earning 3x across all three categories. The AMEX Green takes care of the travel and dining while the AMEX Everyday Preferred takes care of gas station as well as supermarket purchases.

Looking for ThankYou Points? The Citi ThankYou Premier is a solid option by itself with between 2x and 3x earnings across these categories. If you know how to squeeze great value out of ThankYou Points by transferring them to Citi's partners, you can get a great return on your spend.

Those who love Ultimate Reward Points can grab up the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Business Ink Cash Card to come out earning 3x on both travel and dining as well as 2x on gas station purchases. Just be sure to pair those with the no-annual fee Chase Freedom Unlimited or Chase Business Ink Unlimited to perfect the Chase Trifecta.

If you're not in the market for the rewards programs listed above, there's still plenty of options. Want a card that does it all? The Wells Fargo Propel AMEX is the top of the line. It earns 3x across all categories which comes out to a 3% to 4.5% return when redeeming points towards travel.

If you already have a Sam's Club membership or you're thinking about getting one, the Sam's Club Mastercard is another solid option with 5% on gas station and 3% back on both dining and travel spend. Same goes for the Costco Anywhere Visa Card which earns a great return as well.

Adjust Transferable Points

Some rewards programs allow you to transfer your earned points to airline, hotel, and other loyalty programs. These programs will generally have higher point values when doing such. Since these matter so much when choosing a credit card, you can enter your own point value for these programs to include in the calculations. You can set any of the currencies listed below to 0 to calculate based on the non-transfer value (in which most are 1 cent per point with the exception of Chase's 1.25/1.5 cent redemptions).
When transferring to other programs, you should be able to get 1 to 2 cents in value for most of the programs listed below, so I defaulted most to a low average of 1.5 cents. You can click on the to learn more about the value of the currency (opens in a new tab/window).
