Marriott Bonvoy Status

Benefits & How To Qualify

Marriott Bonvoy status offers many perks such as bonus points, room upgrades, and complimentary breakfast. Learn the details of their 6-tier program.

The Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program features a six tier program which contains Member, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador elite status. Each tier features a bunch of useful benefits ranging from up to 100% bonus points to room upgrades featuring standard suites. Obtaining the lower levels of Marriott Bonvoy elite status can be fairly easy due to shortcuts, but the higher levels will actually require you to build up a nice amount of nights or stays with Marriott.

How To Qualify

Each level of Marriott Bonvoy status requires you to have a certain amount of nights spent at a Marriott brand hotel during the calendar year. Nights are defined as an overnight stay at a Marriott hotel. If you check-in on Monday and check-out on Friday, you would earn 4 nights since you stayed overnight Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Since you checked out Friday, that would not be consider a night.

Enhanced Room Upgrade

You'll be able enjoy upgrades to enhanced rooms as a Marriott Gold Elite status member. Enhanced rooms will typically be a room on a high level or with a nice view. These upgrades usually do not includes suites, but it depends on the hotel. I find the easiest way to get an upgrade is to check-in on the Marriott App when it instructs you to do so. This lets them start preparing your room earlier and you may get an upgrade over other members checking in throughout the day.

Do note that upgrades are based on availability. This benefit may not always be available so do not rely on it being such.

Welcome Gift Choice

  • Instead of being forced to obtain 250-500 points per stay, you'll have the ability to choose between points, breakfast offering, or amenity. The amenity at most Marriott brands consist of a market item. I've checked into hotels that offer you one market item when you first check-in and some that has offered me and my guest a daily market credit of $10 per day. It really depends on the hotel, but picking up the breakfast or amenity will give you a lot more value than the few hundreds points.

Once you obtain Marriott Platinum Elite status by staying 50 qualified nights, you'll be able to choose from one of the following benefits:

    • 5 Suite Night Awards (SNAs)
    • Gift Silver Elite Status To Someone

    • Five Elite Night Credits
    • $100 Charity Donation

Of these benefits, the most common ones that are selected are the 5 SNAs and 5 elite night credits. You'll find more info on Annual Choice Benefits towards the bottom of this page.

    Lounge Access

For the Marriott hotels that features lounges, you'll have full access and complimentary breakfast as a Marriott Platinum Elite status member. These lounges also typically offer snacks and beverages as well as hot food during the evenings at times. I've even been to a few lounges that offer free alcoholic beverages as well!

You'll receive guaranteed 4pm late checkout at most Marriott brand hotels as a Marriott Platinum Elite status member. Do note that 4pm checkout may not be available at resort and convention hotels. This will benefit typically applies to your standard Marriott hotels so be sure to remember that.

    Marriott Lifetime Titanium Elite Status

Obtaining lifetime Marriott Titanium status is no longer an option. This lifetime status was made available to those who obtained 750 nights and 10 years of Platinum status by the end of 2018 in the legacy Marriott program.

Earn complimentary Premier Silver status with United as a Marriott Titanium member.

    Marriott Titanium Elite Benefits

    • 75% Bonus Points
    • Additional Annual Choice Benefit
    • 48-Hour Guarantee
    • Benefits of Marriott Platinum Elite Status

    75% Bonus Points

Marriott Titanium Elite status offers the highest bonus of 75%. This gives you a total of 17.5 Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent at most Marriott brand hotels. Add in the 6x multiplier of Marriott's Credit Cards (not the Marriott Bold), and you can earn up to a total of 23.5 Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent which is superb.

(You'll earn 8.75 points per $1 at Element, Residence Inn, and TownePlace Suites. 6x from a Marriott Credit Card will give you up to 14.75 points per $1 spent.)

    Additional Annual Choice Benefit

Once you hit 75 nights and achieve Marriott Titanium Elite status, you'll be able to choose another Annual Choice Benefit. You'll be able to select from the following:

    • Gift Gold Elite Status To Someone
    • 40% Off Your Favorite Mattress (Marriott)
    • Five Elite Night Credits

The difference between the second round of choices compared to the ones you receive at Marriott Platinum Elite status is the bump up to being able to gift Gold Elite status instead of Silver Elite status and the chance to choose a Free Night Award.

    48-Hour Guarantee

As a Marriott Titanium Elite or higher, Marriott will always have a room available for you when you book by 3pm, 48 hours prior to arrival.

    Marriott Ambassador Elite

Marriott Ambassador Elite status is the sixth and highest tier in the Marriott Bonvoy Program. This status adds on Ambassador Service and Your24.

How To Qualify For Marriott Ambassador

You can qualify for Marriott Ambassador status by meeting both of following requirements:

    • Spend 100 Nights at Marriott Hotels
    • Spend $20,000 USD On Qualifying Charges earned on Marriott Stays

    Marriott Ambassador Elite Benefits

    • Ambassador Service
    • Your24
    • Benefits of Marriott Titanium Elite Status

    Ambassador Service

Once you obtain Marriott Ambassador Elite status, you will be assigned a Marriott Ambassador. Ambassadors assist you with just about anything that they can when it comes to Marriott. It's basically your personal point of contact that has the knowledge and resources to make your stays easier and enjoyable.

    Your24

As an Ambassador Elite, you'll be able to use the Your24 benefit. Your24 allows you to choose the 24 hours of your stay. That means you can check in at 8am and check out at 8am or stay from midnight to midnight. This can be useful if you ever need to check-in early or if you want to base your hotel times around your flights and/or travel times.

    Marriott Annual Choice Benefits

Marriott Platinum members who obtain 50 qualifying nights will be able to choose an annual Choice Benefit. Once you hit 75 qualifying nights and become Marriott Titanium, you'll be able to choose an additional annual Choice Benefit. There's a total of six benefits to choose from:

    • 5 Suite Night Awards (SNAs)
    • 1 Free Night Award [Titanium Members Only]
    • Gift Gold Elite Status To Someone
    • 40% Off Your Favorite Mattress (Marriott)
    • Five Elite Night Credits
    • $100 Charity Donation

Suite Night Awards (SNAs) and Five Elite Night Credits are the most commonly selected benefits followed by the Free Night Award for Titanium Members.

    5 Suite Night Awards

Suite Night Awards (SNAs) can be applied to paid and award reservations for a chance to upgrade your room to a suite. One Suite night is good for one night, so if you have a 3-day stay it will require 3 Suite Night Rewards. Suite Nights are not guaranteed and this is something you must take into consideration. Marriott will let you know at least 5 days before your reservation if you have received the upgrade. If they cannot be honored, they will be deposited back into your Marriott account. I highly recommend trying to use these as often as possible as it is very easy to end the year not using all of your SNAs.

    marriott profile
Keep track of your Suite Night Awards and Free Night Award Certificates from your Marriott Bonvoy account.

The type of suites you can choose with Suite Nights will sometimes be based off your original room. Reserving higher tier rooms can give you access to better suites when it comes to hotels that have multiple suites to choose from. So for example, booking a $80 per night standard room may give you access to choose from the $300-$400 per night suites while booking a $200 per night room could give you the ability to choose between from $300-$800 per night suites. So if you want a chance at the best suites in the house, sometimes you'll need to up your room selection.

Once you've obtained 50 or 75 nights during the calendar year, you can choose your Annual Choice Benefit using the Marriott Choice Benefit Link.

    5 Elite Night Credits

This annual choice benefit will allow you to add 5 Elite Nights to your current year's balance. This does not count towards the future year. This benefit is only useful if you plan on using it to obtain the next tier in status before the end of the current calendar year. So if you had 70 nights and was 5 away from hitting Titanium, you could use this benefit to give you that extra push. Same with having 95 nights and $20k spend and needing the extra 5 night push to hit Ambassador Status.

    1 Free Night Award

The free night award that comes with the Annual Choice Benefit can be used at any Marriott Hotel that costs up to 40,000 points. This is slightly more than the free night awards that comes with many of Marriott low-end credit cards, but less than that of Marriott high-end premium cards. If you don't think you can burn through 5 Suite Night Awards, this is a good option to select.

    Gift Silver or Gold Elite

You can give the gift of Marriott Silver Elite status when you obtain 50 nights and the gift of Marriott Gold Elite status when you obtain 75 nights. Marriott Silver status is easy to earn, so gifting that is (in my opinion) a waste of a Choice Benefit selection. Gold, on the other hand, can be a little harder to obtain for anyone that does not want to obtain a premium rewards card. If you know someone who can benefit from Marriott Gold, this could be a great gift.

    40% Off A Mattress

You know those super soft mattresses you lay on when you're spending the night at a Marriott brand hotel such as the Westin? Well Marriott sells those. They're relatively expensive, so 40% off will save you a great deal of money when trying to purchase one.

Shop at the westinstore.com and receive a 40% discount with your Annual Choice Benefit.

    Marriott Credit Card Elite Nights

All of Marriott's Credit Cards offer 15 elite nights towards elite status. You can earn 15 elite nights with a personal Marriott credit card and 15 elite nights with a business Marriott credit card. This means you can earn up to 30 elite nights towards Marriott elite status which grants you automatic Marriott Gold Elite status and makes earning Platinum and higher a lot easier during the calendar year. Do note that stacking multiple personal cards or multiple business cards will not earn you additional elite night credits.

If you're looking to take advantage of this benefit, you can pick up the Marriott Bonvoy Business AMEX Card and any personal Marriott credit card:

    Summary

Marriott Bonvoy Elite status offers lots of useful perks and benefits such as bonus points, upgrades to enhanced rooms and suites, and lots of gifts. It's fairly easy to obtain up to Marriott Gold Elite status with credit cards and you can even earn up to 30 elite nights using Marriott's line up of credit cards to give yourself a great boost towards earning Marriott Platinum Elite status and higher.
