Redeeming points at checkout with Coles

Flybuys points can be redeemed in-store at checkout with Coles and several other retailers. Every 2,000 Flybuys points you redeem is worth an instant $10 off your Coles Supermarket shop which gives your points a value of 0.5 cents each.

Redeeming points with Flybuys Travel

Flybuys points can be used to book travel through Flybuys travel. Every 200 Flybuys points you redeem is worth $1 in travel credit to cover the cost of flights and hotels.

This means that redeeming your points through Flybuys Travel will offer the same 0.5 cents per point as redeeming in-store with Coles.

Transferring points to Virgin Australia

Flybuys points can be transferred to Virgin Australia at a rate of 1,000 Flybuys points for 500 Velocity points. This provides the best value for Flybuys points as you'll be able to transfer points and redeem them for flights with Virgin Australia and partner airlines.

As an example, let's look at a booking between Sydney and Perth. A one-way flight in Business Class would cost you 35,000 Velocity Points plus $30.75 in taxes.

(You could also pay 40,800 points and cover the taxes, but that will take away from the value of your points.)

The cheapest Business Class flight for the same date is $1,229 one-way.

If you wanted to use Flybuys points for this redemption, you would need to transfer 71,000 Flybuys points to Virgin Australia Velocity. This would give you a total of 35,500 Velocity Points since the transfer ratio is 2:1.

Overall, this means that you would be redeeming 71,000 Flybuys points for a $1,229 Business Class ticket. This would give your Flybuys points a value of 1.73 cents each.

This is significantly more than the $355 in value you would get out of redeeming 71,000 points at checkout with Coles or through Flybuys travel.

Don't care much for Business Class? You can still get great value in Economy too!

Looking at the same dates, you can book a one-way economy flight for 17,800 points plus $30.75 in taxes and fees (or 23,100 points if you wanted to avoid paying out any cash).

The cash cost of the flight is $259 one-way.

It's not as much as Business Class, but it's still more than you would get redeeming in-store with Coles or through Flybuys Travel.
