The Aviator Business Card, offered by Barclays, is a great selection for any business that wishes to accumulate additional miles in the American Airlines AAdvantage Program. It provides several bonus categories great for businesses along with perks and benefits specific to AA.

Bonus Categories

The Aviator Business Card features 4 bonus categories that consist of American Airline purchases, office supply stores, telecommunication purchases, and car rentals. Below are the details of each Aviator Business bonus category.

2x American Airlines

The Aviator Business Card earns 2x AAdvantage Miles on American Airline purchases. These are items billed by American Airlines as merchant of record booked through American Airlines channels such as aa.com, American Airlines Reservations, American Airlines Vacations reservations, Airpass and American Airlines airport and city ticket counters. American Airlines Vacations packages, purchase of elite status boost or renewal and American Airlines Cargo products and services does not count toward American Airline purchases.

Earning double miles with co-branded credit cards is an industry standard and not a very good one. Unfortunately, there are no direct transfer partners when it comes to AAdvantage Miles. If you want the best bang for your buck, you can earn Ultimate Rewards Points with Chase and transfer those points to British Airways Avios and use those to book American Airline flights. The other route is to earn points with a good business card from a program that has a great travel portal such as American Express Membership Reward Points or Chase Ultimate Rewards Points. Otherwise, 2x AAdvantage Miles is the best you will get between all of the Citi and Barclay AAdvantage Cards.

2x Office Supply Store

The Barclay Aviator Business Card earns 2x AAdvantage Miles on office supply store purchases. This will be stand-alone merchants that primarily sell stationery and office supplies for business consumption. So places along the lines of Office Max and Staples.

There are cards that generate a higher return on office supply store purchases such as the Bank of America Business Advantage Cash Rewards Card and Chase Ink Business Cash Card. But if you wish to earn an extra AAdvantage Mile for American Airlines on office supply stores, this the only American Airlines credit card that can.

2x Telecommunications

Telecommunication spending with the Aviator Business Card will earn double AAdvantage Miles as well. Barclay defines telecommunication merchants as merchants that sell telecommunications equipment such as telephones, fax machines, pagers, and cellular phones, along with providers of telecommunications services including local and long-distance telephone calls and fax services.

The CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Card also earns 2x AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent. Depending on how much AAdvantage Miles are worth to you, there are several other cards that produce a high return such as the Chase Ink Business Cash which offers 5% cash back and the Chase Ink Business Preferred which offers 3x Ultimate Rewards Points. Ultimate Rewards Points are worth 1.25 cents each when you have the Ink Business Preferred Card and they're redeemed on the travel portal. So you're look at a return of about 3.75% for the Ink Business Preferred meaning AAdvantage Miles would have to be worth more than 1.8 cents each and they would have to be worth 2.5 cents to match the Ink Business Cash's return.

2x Car Rentals

Last, but not least, spending done at car rentals. This category will also earn you 2x AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent with the Aviator Business Card. Barclay defines car rentals as providers of short-term or long-term rentals of cars, trucks, or vans. This does not include merchants that rent motor homes or other recreational vehicles.

As with the telecommunications category, the Citi Business AAdvantage Platinum Select Card also offers double AAdvantage Miles on car rentals. The Hilton Honors Business Card also earns a solid return if you're a fan of Hilton brand hotels. The only other airline to offer a bonus on this category is the Southwest Airlines credit card line up, but that's restricted to rapid rewards partners only.

1x Non-Category

Spending on the Barclay Aviator Business Card outside of the categories listed above will only earn a single AAdvantage Mile per $1 spent. I would not recommend putting any non-category spend on this card unless you value AAdvantage Miles at more than 1.5+ cents each. Otherwise, any 1.5%+ cash back card can beat this return such as the Capital One Quicksilver Card or the 2% cash back Citi Double Cash Card. You can even gain a better return with transferable programs such as the American Express Membership Reward Point Program with the Blue Business Plus Card which earns 2x points per $1 spent on the first $50,000 in purchases.

Perks and Benefits

The AAdvantage Aviator Business Card is packed with a good amount of perks that can save you time, money, and miles with American Airlines.

5% Mileage Bonus

The Barclay Aviator Business Card earns a 5% mileage bonus after the account anniversary date based on the total amount of miles earned during the Card member year using the card. Card holder must renew the annual card membership, and the card account must remain open for at least 45 days after the anniversary date for this rebate.

The CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Card does not offer this bonus, so it's nice to be able to earn some bonus AAdvantage Miles.

First Checked Bag Free

Primary Aviator Business card members may have their First Checked Bag Free of charge when traveling on domestic itineraries. This perk is extended to the cardholder and up to 4 companions as well. The First Checked Bag Free perk does not apply to overweight or oversized bags.

The First Checked Bag Free perk is common on most co-branded airline cards including the Delta Business Gold and Alaska Airlines Visa Business Card. The Southwest Airlines Business Premier Card receives the first AND second checked bag free.

Preferred Boarding

Cardholders will also have preferred boarding for themselves and up to 4 companions traveling on the same reservation This is also a common perk seen on most airline cards. Cards such as the United MileagePlus Explorer Business Card and Delta Skymiles Business Platinum Card also offer priority boarding.

Companion Certificate

A $99 (plus taxes and fees) companion certificate will be earned each year after the account anniversary when $30,000 or more is spent on the Aviator Business Card. The account must be open for at least 45 days after the anniversary date. This certificate is good for a one round trip qualifying domestic economy fare ticket for a companion when an individual round trip qualifying domestic economy fare ticket is purchased.

Including the American Airlines CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum Select Card, there are other cards that offer companion certificates. such as Alaska Airlines and Delta Airlines.

25% Off In-Flight Purchases

In-flight purchases of food and beverages with this card will receive 25% off credited back to the statement. This statement credit could take up to 6-8 weeks after the purchase to post to the Account. All of the Citi and Barclay AAdvantage credit cards offer 25% off in-flight purchases. This is also a common perk on Delta and United credit cards

Earn EQDs

Running $25,000 in purchases through the Barclay Aviator Business Card will earn you an additional 3,000 Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs) each calendar year. These EQDs does not count toward the Million Miler status. EQDs are no longer offered on the Barclay AAdvantage Aviator Red Card.

Sign Up Bonus

The signup bonus for the Barclay Aviator Business Card usually hovers around 40,000 bonus miles. At my rate of 1.4 cents per mile, 40,000 AAdvantage Miles is worth $560. It could be worth more or less depending on the redemption. The best way to know their value to you, is to head over to AA's website and look for flights that cost around that amount. Once you find a flight, note how much it costs in points and how much that same flight costs in cash. You can use the Points and Miles Cash Value Calculator to plug in amounts and see how much value you're getting out of your AA miles.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the AAdvantage Aviator Business Card is $95. This is average for this type of reward card. It could easily be worth the fee if you plan on using the card consistently to rake up AAdvantage Miles. The very similar CitiBusiness Platinum Select Card has the annual fee waived the first year before paying the $95 on the renewal.

Authorized User Fee

The AAdvantage Aviator Business Card does not have an authorized user fee. This allows you to add family and friends so that you can work together to build AAdvantage Miles faster.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Barclay AAdvantage Aviator foreign transaction fee is 0%. Besides the Citi AAdvantage MileUp Card and the Citi AAdvantage Gold Card, the other AAdvantage credit cards have no foreign transaction fee.
