Details on Cost & How To Buy

Everything you need to know about purchasing American Airlines Miles including the cost, the min/max AA miles you can buy, promotions, and how to buy.

American Airlines provides an abundance of different ways that you can earn AAdvantage Miles through travel partners which includes booking hotels, renting cars, dining out, cruising the seas, and more. If you need miles now, the two fastest options for obtaining miles are transferring points from partners and purchasing American Airlines miles directly from their website. Transferring points is the best option as it will generally cost you nothing to do such whereas buying AAdvantage Miles will cost you.

Cost To Purchase

American Airlines miles will cost you between 1.85 cents and 3.95 cents each depending on how many miles you purchase in a single transaction. The standard rate on American Airlines miles are shown in the table below.

In terms of limits, you can purchase as little as 2,000 AAdvantage Miles and as many as 150,000 AAdvantage Miles in a single transaction. You can buy up to 150,000 AAdvantage Miles per calendar year meaning it's possible to hit the max in one transaction.

When To Purchase

The biggest reason to purchase American Airline miles is to top off your account if you're short a few miles or a redemption and transferring points to your account isn't an option. Just be sure to remember that purchasing a low amount of miles will give you the worst deal in terms of cent-per-mile.

As with any rewards, if you can redeem your miles for more than what you paid for them, then purchasing miles will be a good option. There are times in which you can get 2-3 cents per mile on American Airlines flights (usually Business/First class flights). If you can buy the points for low and then redeem them for high, that's a win. Just be sure to run the calculations before you buy the miles.

How To Purchase

American Airlines AAdvantage Miles can be purchased directly from the American Airlines website. You will be asked to log in so be sure that you have your AAdvantage credentials handy.
