Review the benefits of the Citi Platinum Select Card, calculate how many AAdvantage Miles you can earn based on your spend, and compare against top cards.

The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card is a great choice for anyone looking to earn miles on American Airlines, dining, and gas. It's also good for anyone that doesn't not have status with American and wishes to receive status-like perks such as free checked bags, preferred boarding, and discounts on in-flight purchases.

Bonus Categories

The Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card features three bonus categories which are American Airline purchases, gas stations, and restaurants. There is no limit on the amount of AAdvantage Miles you can earn using this card. None of these bonus categories have a cap. Below are the details on each bonus category featured on the Platinum Select Card.

2x American Airlines

The AAdvantage Platinum Select Card earns 2x AAdvantage Miles on American Airlines purchases. Eligible American Airlines purchases are items billed by American Airlines as merchant of record booked through American Airlines channels such as, American Airlines reservations, and American Airlines airport and city ticket counters.

Since six of the AAdvantage Cards earn double miles on American Airlines purchases, this isn't anything that stands out. If you're looking to earn AA miles, this is one of the easiest ways to do such. There are lots of co-branded airline cards that earn double miles with their respective airline such as the Delta and Southwest cards. If you're trying to earn free travel faster, you can look into Membership Rewards Points and Ultimate Rewards Points. Both programs feature great travel portals and great deal of cards that earn points on travel, dining, gas, and grocery!

2x Gas Station

Using the AAdvantage Platinum Select Card for gas purchases will earn 2x AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent. Citi defines gas station purchases as merchants that sell fuel primarily for consumer use and may or may not be attended by a service person. Gas purchases made at warehouse clubs, discount stores, department stores, convenience stores, and commercial fuel dealers (e.g., coal aviation fuel, heating oil, etc.) are not eligible to receive double miles.

Earning 2x miles on gas station miles will give you a return of about 2.8% if you peg these miles at 1.4 cents each. For anyone trying to accumulate AA miles, this is a good category to do such. There are several co-branded airline cards that feature double miles for gas station purchases, but most of them are business cards such as the Asiana Airlines Business Card and United Explorer Business Card. If you're looking to earn on a personal card, the JetBlue Card features 2x on gas and an excellent 3x on JetBlue Airline purchases.

The AAdvantage Platinum Select Card earns 2x AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent on restaurant purchases. Citi counts restaurant purchases as cafes, bars, lounges, and fast food restaurants. Restaurant purchases not eligible to receive double miles include, but are not limited to, purchases at supercenters, warehouse clubs, discount stores, restaurants/cafes inside department stores, caterers, bowling alleys, public and private golf courses, country clubs, convenience stores movie theaters, caterers and meal kit delivery services (e.g., Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, etc.).

If you're a foodie, this is a great way to pad your account with some extra AAdvantage Miles. A few other cards that offer double miles on restaurant purchases consist of the Delta Skymiles Blue Card and the Barclays Frontier Airlines Mastercard which also offers 5x on Frontier Airline purchases!

1x Non-Category

All purchases on the AAdvantage Platinum Select card outside of the categories listed above will earn 1x AAdvantage Miles per $1 spent. This is still a decent return since AAdvantage Miles are worth around 1.4 cents each. If you're going all in for miles with American Airlines, this would not be a bad choice. But if you're looking for return, I'd recommend finding other travel cards that cover any categories you do a great deal of spending in. This is best handled by bank reward programs such as Bank of America Travel Rewards or Ultimate Rewards Points.
