The British Airways Credit Card is another option for anyone that wants a rewards card for earning Avios with British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. While the earnings are pretty decent, the main draw to the British Airways Credit Card is the 100,000 Avios sign up bonus. Similar sign up bonus are also offered on both the Aer Lingus and Iberia Credit Cards as well. Even with none of these airlines being U.S.-based, Avios can be used for award travel with American Airlines as well as other oneworld alliance partners.

Bonus Categories

The British Airways Credit Card features four bonus categories which are purchases made directly with a hotel (non-3rd party) and purchases with British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus. There is no limit to the amount of Avios you can earn spending in these categories and no limit to the amount of Avios you can earn spending on the card.

3x British Airways

The British Airways Visa Signature Credit Card earns 3 Avios per $1 spent on British Airways purchases. While this is not a bad earning rate, you can earn more Avios per $1 spent using Membership Rewards credit cards like the AMEX Platinum Card which earns 5x points per $1 spent. You can then transfer those earned AMEX points directly to your Avios account. You can also get an equal amount of points using Ultimate Rewards credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve (3x points) or the Chase Ink Business Preferred (3x points) and transfer those points to Avios. Using partner credit cards that transfer to British Avios will generally earn you more Avios due to having a wider selection of bonus categories at your disposal.

3x Aer Lingus

The British Airways Visa Signature Credit Card earns 3 Avios per $1 spent on Aer Lingus purchases. As with the spending on British Airways, there are cards that can earn an equal or higher amount of points per $1 spent. If you primarily fly with Aer Lingus, you will want to lean more towards the Chase Aer Lingus Card. While all of these airlines earn Avios, the redemption methods are slightly different across each program/airline. So you will want to read up on the redemption options of each airline and decide on whom you want to earn Avios with.

3x Iberia

The British Airways Visa Signature Credit Card earns 3 Avios per $1 spent on Iberia purchases. As previosly mentioned, there are cards that can earn more Avios per $1 spent via transferring points to the Avios loyalty program. If you primarily fly with Iberia, you'll want to use the Iberia Credit Card to earn Avios so that they're directly credited to your Iberia Plus account.

2x Hotel

Booking hotels direct with the British Airways Visa Signature Credit Card will earn 2 Avios per $1 spent. As with airfare, you can generally earn an equal or better return with other cards. You can use the Chase Sapphire Preferred to earn the same 2x rate on hotels or bump it up a notch with the Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3x points. If you don't mind booking travel through the American Express Travel Site, you can earn 5x points with both the AMEX Platinum and AMEX Business Platinum cards. You'll also earn 2x points on all the other AMEX Membership Rewards credit cards thanks to the bonus points offered on AMEX Travel Portal bookings.

1x Non-Category

All other purchases made on the British Airways Visa Signature Credit Card will earn 1 Avios per $1 spent. This is a very low return which makes this card not too good for non-category purchases. You can use partner credit cards to make up for the slack of the British Airways card by earning points and transferring them to Avios. Chase offers the Chase Freedom Unlimited and Chase Ink Business Unlimited for those wanting to earn 1.5 points per $1 spent while American Express offers the AMEX Blue Business Plus which earns 2 points per $1 spent on the first $50,000 in purchases made during the year.

Perks and Benefits

Travel Together Ticket

British Airways cardholders will earn a Travel Together Ticket after spending $30,000 on the card within the calendar year. The Travel Together Ticket is basically a companion pass for a person to travel with the cardholder for just the cost of taxes, fees, and surcharges. This ticket is in the form of a voucher that can be redeemed by the cardholder once during each calendar year and is good for two years. I would not get this card strictly off this perk alone, but if you're going for the high sign up bonus (discussed below) then you might as well push for it.

Sign Up Bonus

One of the best features of the British Airways Card is it's large sign up bonus. New card members will earn 50,000 Bonus Avios after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. An additional 25,000 Bonus Avios can be earned after spending $10,000 on purchases within your first year of account opening. Lastly, another 25,000 Bonus Avios can be earned for spending a total of $20,000 on purchases within the first year of account opening. So that's a total 50,000 Avios if you spend $3,000, 75,000 Avios if you spend a total of $10,000 and 100,000 Avios if you're able to spend a total of $20,000. While 100,000 Avios has a cash value of anywhere between $1,000 to $1,500+, the main focus should be the sweet spot for redemptions. Some redemptions cost as low as 7,500 Avios and Avios will usually treat you a lot better than AAdvantage Miles when it comes to award travel.

Credit Card Fees

Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the British Airways Credit Card is $95. This is in line with most co-branded airline cards. The Aer Lingus Credit Card and Iberia Credit Card, both of which earns Avios, also has the pricing point of $95.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee to add authorized users to the British Airways Credit Card. If you have friends or family that occasionally made British Airways purchases, you'll want to add them to the card. This could also help increase spending if you're trying to hit the higher $10k and $20k spend bonuses.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The British Airways Credit Card has a 0% foreign transaction fee. This means you can use the card internationally without worrying about being charged a fee for transactions outside of the United States. Since this card earns 1 Avios on all non-category purchases, this isn't a good card for travel purchases. If you're looking to earn Avios, you would do well to choose one of Chase's Ultimate Rewards Credit Cards which can earn 2 to 3 Avios per $1 spent on dining and travel. You can also check out the Barclay Uber Card or Capital One SavorOne Card if you're looking to earn cash back internationally with no foreign transaction fees.
