Aer Lingus Credit Card
The Chase Aer Lingus Credit Card is a fantasic card for anyone looking to earn a solid return of Avios across several airlines. Along with earning triple Avios with five airlines, card members will also receive priority boarding on flights from or to the US and have the chance to spend their way to a Companion Pass annually.
Avios is a shared airline reward point currency between Aer Lingus, Air Italy, British Airways, Flybe, Iberia, kulula.com, and Vueling. Avios are worth an easy 1 cent when used for simple award flight redemptions. If you're going for first/business class or using them to book awards on other partnering airlines, you can sometime get a value of around 1.5 cents per Avios. Besides air travel, these points can also be used for hotels, car rentals, and experiences. You can check out the Avios Point Calculator for an Avios Redemption Chart that will give you the cash value of those redemptions. You will also find a list of all oneworld partners, all Avios earning credit cards, and a list of ways to earn even more avios from travel partners and other reward programs!
The Aer Lingus Credit Card features 4 bonus categories which all consist of purchases with various airlines. Those airlines are Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, and LEVEL. This card used to earn 3x on OpenSkies as well before it ceased operations summer 2018. There is no limit to the amount of Avios you can earn on the Aer Lingus Credit Card. Below are the details of each bonus category.
3x Aer Lingus
The Aer Lingus Credit Card earns 3 Avios per $1 spent on purchases made directly with Aer Lingus. This makes this one of the best cards to put Aer Lingus purchases on if you're trying to accumulate Avios. Since Avios is a shared currency across multiple airlines, there is a few choices when it comes to earning these points with other cards. Chase's Ultimate Rewards Program is a direct transfer partner of AerLingus AerClub so earning points using Chase's line-up of point and cash back cards is a good way to help build additional Avios. The transfer rate is 1:1 meaning one Ultimate Rewards Point earned with Chase will equal one Avios. This lets you earn Avios on categories such as travel and dining with the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Chase Sapphire Preferred. Combine a Ultimate Rewards Point earning card with a Chase cash back card such as the Chase Freedom Ultimated Card to earn 1.5x points for all purchases or the Chase Freedom to earn 5x points on quarterly rotating categories!
3x British Airways
Spending done directly with British Airways on the Aer Lingus Credit Card will earn 3 Avios per $1 spent. British Airways also has it's own co-branded Chase credit card which earns 3x on both British Airways purchases and Iberia purchases. If you plan on putting a great deal of spend through the card and fly with British Airways more frequently than Aer Lingus, the Britsh Airways Visa Signature has the ability to earn a Travel Together Ticket after spending $30,000 on the card in a calendar year. This ticket is good for two years and allows a companion to travel with you without using any additional Avios. The seat is complimentary and all that's required to pay is the taxes, fees, and carrier charges. It's basically a companion pass with British Airways. Southwest Airlines also offers a companion pass that lasts for the remainder of year earned and the following year. AMEX's Membership Rewards Program and Chase's Ultimate Rewards Program are 1:1 transfer partners of British Airways. Earn points with either program and convert them to Avios by transferring them to British Airways!
Iberia Airlines purchases made on the Aer Lingus Credit Card will earn 3 Avios per $1 spent. You can earn triple Avios on both this card, the British Airways Card, and the Iberia Visa Signature Card. The co-branded Iberia card gets a 10% discount on Iberia flights purchased on iberia.com/chase10/. Spending $30,000 on the card will also earn a $1,000 discount voucher for you to use when booking a trip for two. You would have to decide on which of these cards benefit you the best when it comes to the $30k spending perks. Both AMEX's Membership Rewards Program and Chase's Ultimate Rewards Program are 1:1 transfer partners of Iberia Plus meaning you can earn rewards in these two programs and convert their points to Avios by transferring them.
The Aer Lingus Credit Card earns 3 Avios per $1 spent on purchases with LEVEL (airline). This is the only card that earns 3x on this small European airline. If you're planning on flying LEVEL, using the Aer Lingus card or a card that earns on airfare such as the AMEX Gold Card would benefit you.
Any purchases outside of the airlines listed above will earn 1 Avios per $1 spent. Since Avios has a good return per cent, if you're looking to earn Avios or trying to reach the $30,000 spend goal on this card (or any of the others listed here) putting non-category spend wouldn't be a bad idea. Do note that a better return can be earned on several categories through the AMEX Membership Rewards Program and Chase Ultimate Rewards Program since they both are 1:1 transfer partners of multiple Avios earning airlines.
Perks and Benefits
Making $30,000 or more in purchases during the calendar year on the Aer Lingus Credit Card will earn a economy companion ticket. This ticket is good for 12 months. No taxes and fees apply to this Companion Ticket which is not the norm as most airlines such as Southwest and Alaska still make you pay the taxes, fees, and surcharges.
Aer Lingus Card holders and any authorized users on the account will be eligible for Priority Boarding on Aer Lingus flights originating in the U.S. and Ireland.
Sign Up Bonus
The sign up bonus for the Chase Aer Lingus Card is 100,000 Avios. 50,000 Bonus Avios after $3,000 spend within first 3 months plus 25,000 Bonus Avios after $10,000 spend within your first year. Plus a further 25,000 Bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 total on purchases within your first year from account opening.
