The Delta Skymiles Blue Card is a great card for anyone who wants to earn Delta Skymiles at a good rate without worrying about an annual fee. While it doesn't come with the First Checked Bag Free Perk that all the other Delta credit cards come with, it still saves you money on in-flight purchases and earns you double Skymiles for both dining out and Delta purchases.

Value of Delta Skymiles

Delta Skymiles are valued at about 1.2 cents each when used to book flights with Delta Airlines, but can be worth a lot more or less depending on the date and destination. They have the best value when it comes to either international travel, long distance travel (i.e. New York to California), and when Delta has their Flash Sales every so often. Besides using Delta Skymiles for award travel to book segments and round trips, you can use them to shop in the Delta marketplace, upgrade your seat for your flight before or after buying the tickets, and to purchase a Delta Sky Club Membership. American Express Delta Card holders also have the exclusive ability to use miles to lower the price of an airfare ticket in multiples of $50 which is equal to 5,000 Skymiles.

You can use the Delta Skymiles Value Calculator to calculate the dollar value of your Delta Skymiles for all redemptions including flights, gift cards, hotels, and car rentals. It also covers all the ways you can build your Skymiles through flying, shopping, travel partners, credit cards, and much more.

Bonus Categories

The Delta Skymiles Blue Card features two bonus categories which are Delta purchases and restaurants. Spending in either of these categories will earn bonus Skymiles. There is no limit to the amount of Skymiles you can earn with the Delta Blue Card. Below are the details of each bonus category and which purchases qualify.

2x Delta Purchases

Using the Delta Skymiles Blue Card for Delta Purchases will earn 2 Skymiles per $1 spent. American Express counts eligible Delta purchases as purchases where Delta is the merchant of record, such as purchases via, phone reservations, or ticket counters, upgrades, miles, seat selection, Delta Sky Club® membership or passes, pre-purchased meals, in-flight purchases of food, alcoholic beverages and audio headsets on Delta-operated flights. Do note that in-flight wireless internet access is not counted as a Delta purchases.

Earning double miles with a co-branded card is about the standard. In terms of Skymiles, this is equal to about a 2.4% return which isn't bad. Since American Express is a 1:1 transfer partner of Delta Airlines, this return can be beat by several of their Membership Reward Point earning cards. This includes the AMEX Gold Card which earns 3x points on airfare and the luxury Platinum Card which earns 5x points on airfare purchases.

If you're looking for another no-fee card that earns on both miles and restaurants, the Barclay JetBlue Card fits the bill. It earns triple TrueBlue miles on JetBlue purchases and double TrueBlue miles on both restaurants and grocery store purchases. On top of that, it offers 50% off in-flight purchases which is 30% higher than Delta offers on any of their credit cards.

2x U.S. Restaurants

The Delta Skymiles Blue Card earns 2 Skymiles per $1 spent at restaurants. American Express counts U.S. restaurants as any fine dining or fast food establishment that is coded as such and located in the United States. United States owned businesses that operate outside of the United States (such as Hard Rock Paris) will not earn the double Skymiles bonus.

The Delta Blue Card is the only Delta Skymiles Credit Card that earns bonus miles on non-Delta purchases which is what sets it apart from the others. If you're looking to earn more Skymiles, this is a good card to put these purchases on, but an overall better return can be found on plenty of other cards. This includes the Barclay Uber Card (4% cash back) and Capital One SavorOne Card (3% cash back). While the Delta Blue Skymiles card earns double Skymiles only in the states and has a foreign transaction fee of 2.7%, both the Uber and SavorOne cards earn cash back overseas and have no foreign transaction fee.

Any spending on the Delta Skymiles Blue Card outside of restaurants and Delta Airlines will earn 1 Skymiles per $1 spent. This is a relatively low return of 1.2% if you peg Skymiles at 1.2 cents each. There are several Membership Reward Cards that earn high returns on grocery, gas, and airfare. It's better to earn a higher rate on those cards and transfer it to your Delta SkyMiles account than to only earn a single SkyMiles per $1 spent. For example, you can earn 2.2 Membership Reward Points per $1 spent on grocery with the Everyday Card or 4.5 Membership Reward Points per dollar with the Everyday Preferred Card to earn 2.2 Skymiles and 4.5 Skymiles respectively when transfered at the 1:1 ratio. Do note that American Express charges a fee of $0.0006 per point transferred. While it is a very small fee, it's still a fee that will add up depending on how many points you transfer. So every 10,000 Membership Reward Points you transfer will cost you $6.

Perks and Benefits

20% Off In-Flight Purchases

The Delta Skymiles Blue Credit Card earns 20% back on in-flight purchases. This 20% savings will be given back to you in the form of a statement credit. Most co-branded credit cards earn a certain percent off when it comes to in-flight purchases. Some examples of such are the JetBlue Plus Card (50% off), all 7 America Airline Credit Cards (25% off), and the United Airlines Explorer Card (25% off).

Standard AMEX Benefits

The Delta Skymiles Blue Card features the standard American Express Credit Card perks such as, but not limited to, AMEX Offers, access to AMEX presale tickets, return protection, roadside assistance, complimentary ShopRunner membership, extended warranty, purchase protection, and travel accident insurance.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard Delta Skymiles Blue Card sign up bonus is 10,000 Delta Skymiles which is worth about $120 when it comes to award travel. It can also be applied directly to a ticket purchases to receive $100 off (1 cent value). Delta also has Flash Sales which sometimes features one-way flights for 10,000+ Skymiles. You can jump over to the Delta SkyMiles Cash Value Calculator to see the full list of redemption options when it comes to 10,000 Skymiles.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

There is no annual fee for the Delta Skymiles Blue Card. You will always come out positive when using this card to earn Skymiles within the United States.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee for adding authorized users to the Delta Skymiles Blue Card. If you have friends and family that occasionally dine out, I would recommend adding them to assist in building your Skymiles faster.

Foreign Transaction Fee

Purchases on the Delta Skymiles Blue Card outside of the United States will be charged a 2.7% foreign transaction fee. I do not recommend using this card overseas as you will lose value faster than you can earn it. There are plenty of restaurant cards that have no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee when used outside of the United States such as the Barclay Uber Card and the Capital One SavorOne Card.
