Review the benefits of the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX (2020), calculate how many Skymiles you can earn, and compare results against top cards.

The Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card is the entry level business card for those looking to earn Skymiles across a few business bonus categories as well as earn some benefits when flying Delta. If you don't have Delta Medallion Status, this is also a great card to avoid baggage fees when flying Delta.

Bonus Categories

The Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card features four bonus categories which are Delta Airlines, restaurant, U.S. shipping, and U.S. advertisement purchases. There is no limit to the amount of bonus Delta Skymiles you can earn spending in these categories and no limit to the amount of miles you can earn with the card overall.

2x Delta Airlines

The Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card earns 2 Skymiles per $1 spent on Delta Airlines purchases. This will be purchases where Delta is the merchant of record, such as purchases via Delta.com, phone reservations, or ticket counters, upgrades, miles, seat selection, Delta Sky Club® membership or passes, pre-purchased meals, in-flight purchases of food, alcoholic beverages and audio headsets on Delta-operated flights. Do note that in-flight purchases (e.g. Gogo) will not count as Delta purchases.

If you're looking to earn a lot more than 2 Skymiles per $1 spent on Delta airfare purchases, your options will be the AMEX Business Platinum Card or the AMEX Business Gold Card.

The AMEX Business Platinum earns 5 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent on airfare booked through the American Express Travel Portal. This portal features most of the same airlines you would find booking with Delta direct and booking through the AMEX Travel Portal will still earn you Delta Skymiles as well as MQMs, MQSs, and MQDs towards elite status. The Business Platinum also comes with a bunch of other useful perks such as Delta SkyClub access, Centurion Lounge access, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck, and much more. The AMEX Gold Business Card will earn 4 Membership Rewards on the two categories you spend the most in which airfare is one of the available categories.

The AMEX Business Gold Card features all of the categories of the Delta Gold Business AMEX except at 4x.

2x U.S. Shipping

When you use the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card to pay for shipping in the U.S. you will earn 2 Skymiles per $1 spent. These will count as purchases made with courier, postal, and freight so companies such as FedEx, UPS, and USPS will earn you bonus Skymiles.

In terms of earning, the real winner will be the AMEX Business Gold Card since it can earn you the equivalent of 4x Skymiles per $1 spent after you transfer your Membership Rewards Points to your Skymiles account. Outside of picking up the Business Gold Card, this is the only card that earns in this category.

2x U.S. Advertising

The Delta Skymiles Gold Business Card will earn you 2 Skymiles per $1 spent when used to pay U.S. advertising in select media. That includes purchases of online, television, and radio advertising from media providers located in the U.S. in order to promote a business. Direct mail services including list or lead generation will not count.

Again, the best card for this category will be the AMEX Business Gold Card due to the ability to earn 4 Skymiles per $1 spent through point transfers. If the Business Gold Card doesn't interest you, the Delta Skymiles Gold Business Card is the next best thing to earning Delta Skymiles.

2x Restaurants

The Delta Skymiles Gold Business Card will earn you 2 Skymiles per $1 spent on restaurant purchases. This will be consist of your typical fast food, fine dining, food delivery services, and other things that you would expect to code as restaurant. Do note that some dining facilities that located inside other establishments (hotels, casinos, etc) may not code as restaurant.

You already know which card will earn you the most Skymiles (hint: Business Gold) but if you're looking for the second best option and/or looking for perks with Delta, the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX is your card.

1x Non-Category

All other purchases made on the Delta Skymiles Gold Business Card will earn you 1 Skymile per $1 spent. This is a low return that can be better improved upon by using Membership Rewards Cards (don't worry... the AMEX Business Gold is not the winner here). The best business card you can use for non-category purchases to earn Delta Skymiles will be the AMEX Blue Business Plus which earns 2x points on the first $50,000 in purchases during the year.

Perks and Benefits

Do note that as of January 1, 2020, the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card will no longer have the MQD Waiver benefit. The $29 Delta SkyClub access will no longer be a benefit as of January 30, 2020.

First Checked Bag Free

As a Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card member, you and up to 8 other people traveling on the same reservation will all receive the a free first checked bag. Checked bags with Delta will cost you $25 one-way, $50 roundtrip so this benefit can save you hundreds if you don't have Delta Medallion Status. Do note that this benefit does not apply to additional cardholders traveling without the primary cardholder.

$100 Flight Credit

Running $10,000 in spend across the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card will earn you a $100 Delta Flight Credit. This credit will be in the form of an eCredit and can be applied to any Delta flight purchase made through Delta.com or with Delta Reservations.

If you were to stick with spending $10,000 only on the 2x categories, this would be equal to earning an extra cent per $1 spent. So if you value Skymiles at 1.2 cents each, you would be earning a return of 3.4% on up until you hit the threshold which is not bad at all. If you're a business with relatively consistent spend, this shouldn't be a hard bonus to grab up.

20% Off In-Flight Purchases

When you use the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX to make purchases with Delta in-flight, you will receive 20% off in the form of a statement credit. This credit will usually post to your account within a day or two after the transaction. Eligible purchases include pre-purchased meals, and in-flight purchases of food, alcoholic beverages and audio headsets, on Delta-operated flights. This discount will not apply to other purchases in-flight such as WiFi.

This benefit is offered on all Delta AMEX cards.

Priority Boarding

You will be able to board Delta-operated flights with the Main Cabin 1 Priority Boarding group. This puts you ahead of others that board in Main Cabin 2 & 3, and basic economy. It's a great perk for those who don't have Delta Medallion Status that wants to have a better chance to secure some overhead bin space.

delta pay with miles
Use the Pay With Miles option to shave the cost off your flights.

Pay With Miles

During check out, when paying for a ticket through the Delta website, you will have the ability to Pay with Miles. This option allows you to redeem your Skymiles for a value of 1 cents each to shave down the price of your airfare. This is done in 5,000-mile increments in which 5,000 miles will give you a $50 discount off of your ticket price. The plus to choosing Pay with Miles over the Miles+Cash option is that you will still earn Medallion Qualification Miles, Segments, and Dollars (cash paid portion) using this option. When you use Miles+Cash, you will not receive any credit towards Delta Medallion Status. So you will have to weight which is more important to you... redeeming at 1 cent and earning MQMs/MQSs/MQDs or redeeming at around 1.2 cents each and not earning MQMs/MQSs/MQDs towards Medallion Status.

Standard AMEX Benefits

Since the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card is an American Express credit card, you'll receive a lot of additional benefits that can add great value to the card. This includes, but is not limited to:

AMEX Offers alone can easily make up for the annual fee of the card if you do not have access to this benefit through other AMEX credit cards. Other business related benefits can also save you money and help with managing your business such as Vendor Pay and Account Manager.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card sign up bonus is 30,000 Skymiles after spending $1,000 on the card within the first 3 months of ownership and a $50 statement credit after you use the card to make a Delta purchase within the first 3 months. The 30,000-point part of the sign up bonus is worth around $360 if you value Skymiles at 1.2 cents each. The $50 statement credit is also a welcomed addition to the miles.

Promotional sign up bonuses for the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card can be as high as 50,000 Skymiles. If you pull up this card and see that offer, I recommend going for it if you're looking to earn some easy Skymiles.

Credit Card Fees

Fees
Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card is $99. Picking up this card to avoid the baggage fee alone should easily make up for the annual fee as you'll come out ahead with as little as two roundtrips (and that's if you're traveling by yourself). Other benefits offered on the card such as AMEX Offers, car rental insurance, and the in-flight discount can also make the card easily worth the small fee.

Authorized User Fee

It will cost you $0 to add employee cards (authorized users) to the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card. If you have others that plan on spending across the several categories on this card, I highly recommend adding them as additional users. This will help you build your miles faster and also push you towards the $100 Delta Flight Credit which requires $10,000 in spend during the calendar year.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card has a 0% foreign transaction fee which means you'll be able to use this card to earn Skymiles spending internationally without being penalized. While the business categories of this card are tied to U.S. purchases, you can still get a decent amount of Skymiles using the 2x restaurant category.

If you're really looking to earn Delta Skymiles internationally, you'll want to consider using Membership Rewards credit cards since you can transfer Membership Rewards Points to your Delta Skymiles account at a 1:1 ratio.

Upgrading & Downgrading Delta Cards

If you want to upgrade or downgrade your Delta Business AMEX Card, do note that this is possible within the Delta family of business cards assuming you're in good standing with AMEX. Do note that you cannot move between personal/consumer and business versions of Delta Cards. So you cannot go from the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card to the Delta Skymiles Platinum AMEX Card for example. If you plan on upgrading (i.e. move from Gold to Platinum or Reserve), you can contact Delta or upgrade online.

delta upgrade request
The 'Apply Now' button will be replaced with 'Request An Upgrade' when viewing a higher-tier Delta Card.

When you upgrade your card, do note that you may end up forfeiting your sign up bonus for the card you're upgrading to. AMEX sometimes offers sign up bonuses to those who upgrade. If a sign up bonus is available, you'll see this option on the card's page along with the Request An Upgrade option. If you do not see anything mentioning a sign up bonus, you will not receive one. You can only go for an AMEX sign up bonus once per card, per lifetime so if you upgrade without a sign up bonus, you'll never be able to obtain that bonus in the future. You'll want to keep this in mind.
