Review the benefits of the revamped Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX (2020), calculate how many Skymiles you can earn based on spend, and compare to top cards.

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card is great for those who fly Delta a few times per year that also wants a handful of useful travel benefits when traveling Delta. This includes free checked bags, an annual companion pass for a person to tag along in Main Cabin for just the cost of taxes/fees, and a nice return on hotel spending along with bonus points for large purchases. While it doesn't have the useful business categories offered on the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX, it's still a great business card for those who fly Delta often.

Bonus Categories

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card features two bonus categories which are Delta airlines and hotel purchases. There is no limit to the amount of bonus Skymiles you can earn spending in these two categories and no limit to the amount of Skymiles you can earn with the card overall.

Large purchases of $5,000 or more will also grant you an additional 0.5 points per $1 spent for a total multiplier of 1.5x. You can earn up to an additional 50,000 extra miles associated with this benefit per calendar year.

Note: American Express Membership Rewards is a direct transfer partner of Delta Skymiles. This means you can earn Membership Rewards Points and turn them into Delta Skymiles by transferring them to your Skymiles account at a 1:1 ratio. If you want to maximize your earnings with Delta, you'll want to study up on the Membership Rewards Program.

3x Delta Airlines

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card will earn you 3 Skymiles per $1 spent on Delta purchases. This includes purchases in which Delta is the merchant of record, such as purchases via, phone reservations, or ticket counters, upgrades, miles, seat selection, Delta Sky Club® membership or passes, pre-purchased meals, in-flight purchases of food, alcoholic beverages and audio headsets on Delta-operated flights. Do note that in-flight purchases (e.g. Gogo) will not count as Delta purchases.

Earning 3x on Delta Airline purchases is the highest you can do when it comes to using Delta's line up of American Express Cards. This is a solid return that is higher than the industry standard of 2x miles other airline credit cards offer. While running Delta spend through this card is totally acceptable, you can earn a higher return using the AMEX Business Platinum Card if you do not mind purchasing your Delta airfare though the American Express Travel Portal. You'll still have access to a good chunk of the same flights and you'll still receive MQMs/MQSs/MQDs towards Delta Medallion Status plus the card features many benefits that are useful to Delta customers such as complimentary Delta SkyClub access for instance.

3x Hotel

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card will earn you 3 Skymiles per $1 spent on Delta purchases. This will apply to purchases made directly through the hotel. Booking a hotel stay through third parties such as Expedia,, or Agoda will not count and will be recognized as a non-category purchase.

This is a pretty solid return for those who don't mind earning Delta Skymiles when booking hotels, but do note that co-branded hotel credit cards are usually top of the line when it comes to high returns. This especially holds true for Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, and IHG in which the return per $1 spent is extremely high. Plus, most cards offered by the aforementioned hotels offer complimentary elite status and other benefits when staying at their respective brands. Before you start to swipe your Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX at hotels, I suggest researching hotel credit cards to see if they can do you some good.

1.5x $5k Purchases

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card will earn you an additional 0.5 Skymiles per $1 spent on large purchases of $5,000 or more. If a merchant breaks up your purchase/charges into smaller amounts that add up to $5,000+, it will not count. These have to be single transactions that total $5,000 or more. This bonus category has cap of 50,000 points per calendar year which is $100,000 in $5k+ purchases per year. Do note that this bonus does not stack with the other bonus categories featured on this card. Making a $5,000+ Delta or hotel purchases will still give you the normal 3x earning rate.

While this is a decent benefit, you can use the Blue Business Plus Card to earn 2x points on the first $50,000 in purchases made during the year. It's a lower cap, but can be useful for anyone that does not want to worry about having to make $5k+ purchases to receive a bonus.

This category is not currently reflected in the calculator on this page. This benefit is also featured on the AMEX Business Platinum Card.

1x Non Category

All purchases outside of Delta and hotels will earn you 1 Skymile per $1 spent. This is the normal low earning rate for all of Delta's AMEX Cards. You can earn a higher return using the Blue Business Plus Card to earn 2x on the first $50,000 in purchases. In terms of business cards, that's the best you will get. The second best choice for earning a solid return on non-category purchases would be the AMEX Everyday Preferred Card which can earn you up to an uncapped 1.5 points per $1 spent.

Perks and Benefits

Miles Boost will be changing to Status Boost™, and bonus miles will no longer be included starting January 30, 2020.

Main Cabin Companion Pass

One of the primary reason of holding this card, in my opinion, is for the Main Cabin Companion Pass. This allows you to bring a companion with you in Main Cabin for just the cost of taxes and fees. The Companion Pass benefit alone can be worth more than the annual fee of the card. Anyone that tells you otherwise either does not fly Delta or does not know how to use the Delta Companion Pass as it is very easy to spend more than $250 on a Delta Airline ticket. For example, I typically fly to Tampa from Detroit to visit family with my sister. A flight to Tampa during the weekend we usually go costs a total of $296.80.

detroit to tampa flight
A base fare of $249.30 along with $47.50 in taxes, fees, & charges.

The base cost of the flight is $249.30. So if I used the companion pass with this trip, my sister would be able to tag along for just the cost of taxes/fees/charges which would be $47.50. That would save me $249.30 which is basically the annual fee of the card.

And this is just an example. I have several flights per year with my wife or sister that costs a lot more than $296, so I wouldn't use it for a small trip to Florida. The most I've saved with this benefit myself is $375 which was the base cost of a flight to Portland, Oregon. These type of savings is why me and my wife both own this card.

Status Boost

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card comes with the ability to earn you Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) by running heavy spend through the card. You'll earn 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles for every $25,000 you run through the card and you'll have the chance to do this twice for a total of 20,000 Medallion Qualification Miles after spending $50,000 across the card.

While you will not earn Delta Medallion Status with this card alone, it is a nice boost for those who need it. If you're looking to spend your way to status, the Delta Skymiles Reserve Business AMEX and Delta Skymiles Reserve AMEX both allow you to earn 15,000 MQMs with for every $30,000 in spend four times. That means you can earn 60,000 MQMs with each card which would be enough MQMs for Diamond Status and it would put you $10,000 shy of reaching the MQM Waiver for Diamond status.

Global Entry / TSA PreCheck

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card comes with up to $100 towards the fee of a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application. This is a very useful benefit featured on many cards that gives you expedited access through customs and TSA security checkpoints. If you travel internationally or plan on traveling internationally, you'll want to heavily consider going for Global Entry which comes with TSA PreCheck.

If you already have Global Entry/TSA PreCheck, do note that you can gift this benefit to others by using your Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card to pay for another person's application. This benefit isn't tied to the cardholder. It's merely triggered by the application fee.

First Checked Bag Free

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card will grant you and up to 8 people traveling on the same reservation a free first checked bag. Delta charges $25 per way ($50 roundtrip) to check bags. If you do not have Delta Medallion Status, this can easily save you hundreds per year depending on how often you and your party flies Delta.

This benefit does not apply to additional cardholders traveling without the primary cardholder.

Spend heavy to reach the MQD Waiver and Status Boost benefits.

Priority Boarding

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card will grant you priority Main Cabin 1 boarding on Delta flights. This puts you before Main Cabin 2, Main Cabin 3, and Basic Economy boarding. If you're looking for overhead bin space, this benefit can help. Just note that a lot of other people own Delta AMEX Card's as well, so you'll want to quick when Main Cabin 1 is called if you need bin space.

20% Off In-Flight Purchases

When you use the Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card to make purchases onboard Delta flights, you will receive 20% off in the form of a statement credit. This applies to pre-purchased meals, in-flight purchases of food, alcoholic beverages, and audio headsets. This can be a big savings for those who like to make purchases in-flight.

Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) Waiver

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX grants you access to the Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) Waiver. This allows you to bypass the spend requirement for Delta Medallion Status by running heavy spend through the Platinum and Reserve versions of Delta AMEX Cards. You'll need to spend the following amounts to receive the MQD Waiver:

  • $25,000 Spend - Silver, Gold, and Platinum Waiver
  • $250,000 Spend - Diamond Waiver

As long as you have one Delta AMEX Card that grants you the ability to earn the MQD Waiver, spend ran across all Delta Cards will count towards that waiver. For example, running $20,000 through the Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX and running $5,000 through the personal Delta Skymiles Blue AMEX will grant you access to the Silver/Gold/Platinum MQD Waiver even through the benefit is not available on the Delta Skymiles Blue AMEX.

Pay With Miles

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card grants you the ability to use Delta's Pay with Miles option. When you use this option, you'll be able to redeem your Skymiles at a value of 1 cent each towards the cost of your airfare purchase at checkout on the Delta website. While this is typically a lower redemption value than using the Miles+Cash option, the benefit to using Pay with Miles is that your flight will still earn you Medallion Qualification Miles, Segments, and Dollars (cash paid portion) towards Delta Medallion Status. When you use Miles+Cash option, you'll get the better return on your Skymiles but you will not receive anything towards Delta Medallion Status. So you'll have to weight which one you're willing to use when making your airfare purchase.

This benefit is available on all personal and business Delta AMEX Cards.

Reduced Delta SkyClub Access

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX will grant you a discount when entering Delta SkyClubs. As a cardholder, you'll pay the reduced rate of $39 per visit which is a $20 savings over the normal cost of $59 per visit. You'll also be able to bring up to two guests or immediately family at the rate of $39 per person, per location. Do note that you as well as those entering with you must have be traveling on a same-day Delta or Delta partner airline flight.

Standard AMEX Benefits

Delta credit cards are offered by American Express which means you'll receive a good handful of additional benefits that come standard on their cards. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • AMEX Offers
  • Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance
  • Baggage Insurance Plan
  • ShopRunner Membership
  • Connect to QuickBooks
  • Account Manager
  • Vendor Pay by
  • American Express Business App

All of these benefits can be very useful to those who travel or plan on shopping with the Delta Skymiles credit card especially AMEX Offers which can easily make up for the fee by itself if you don't have access to the perk through other AMEX Cards.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard sign up bonus for the Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX is 50,000 Skymiles after making $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of having the card. At times, this card also offers an alternative sign up bonus of 5,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) and 35,000 Skymiles after you make $1,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of having the card. The better option of the two is the 50,000 Skymiles unless you really cherish MQMs.

Promotional sign up bonuses for the Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX can be as high as 70,000 Skymiles. This is what you'll want to aim for if you're looking for a solid sign up bonus that can take you far.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card is $250. In my opinion, the companion pass alone makes up for the fee of the card if you plan on taking a trip with another person. Outside of the companion pass, Status Boost and the MQD Waiver can also be great benefits if you have the ability to run heavy spend through the card. If none of those benefits tickle your fancy, you'll want to consider looking at Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card.

Authorized User Fee

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX does not have a fee associated with adding additional employee cards. If you have employees (or family/friends) that spend money on Delta and hotel purchases or you need help trying to hit the MQD Waiver and Status Boost, adding additional users will help you hit your goal.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX has a 0$ foreign transaction fee. This means you can use the card for intentional travel and spending without being penalized. While it's great that it has a 0% FTF, this card will not earn you much in terms of non-category spend. You'll want to consider Membership Rewards credit cards for international travel and transfer those earned points to your Delta Skymiles account.

Upgrading & Downgrading Delta Cards

If you feel that you want to upgrade or downgrade your Delta Skymiles Platinum Business AMEX Card, you can do so by contacting AMEX. You can upgrade to the Delta Skymiles Reserve Business AMEX Card or downgrade to the Delta Skymiles Gold Business AMEX Card. Downgrades will require you to contact AMEX via phone or chat. You can do the same for upgrades, but you'll have the option to upgrade online by pulling up the card you want to upgrade to.

delta upgrade request
The 'Apply Now' button will be replaced with 'Request An Upgrade' when viewing a higher-tier Delta Card.

It is possible to earn a sign up bonus when upgrading your card. If you're eligible, you'll see the option on the same page as the 'Request An Upgrade' option. You can also ask over the phone or via chat if there's an offer available. When you product change to another card, you'll be ineligible to earn the sign up bonus for that card since AMEX bonuses are once per card, per lifetime. Unless you don't care about earning a new sign up bonus, I recommend waiting until an offer is available or closing your current card and applying for the upgraded version as it can make a big difference.
