Earning With Delta & Partners

Get the details on how to earn Delta Skymiles spending with Delta and their airline partners, booking hotels, renting cars, shopping online, and more.

There is no shortage on ways to earn Delta Skymiles. Aside from flying Delta, Skymiles can be earned with booking travel such as cruises and hotels, paying energy bills, and shopping online. Delta also offers it's own earning programs such as Delta Vacations and Delta Cruises which can earn you a great deal of Skymiles. Read on to find out the different ways you can earn Skymiles through Delta's partners.

Earning Miles Flying Delta Airlines

One of the easiest ways to earn Delta Skymiles is by flying Delta Airlines. Delta follows a revenue-based structure meaning Skymiles members will start earn miles based on the base price of Delta airfare. Members will not earn miles on the government imposed fees and surcharges attached to the airfare ticket.

In addition to earning Skymiles, members will also earn Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs), Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs), and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) when traveling on Delta and with most airline partners. Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) are earned based on the distance you fly and the fare class of your ticket. These miles are not the same as the Delta Skymiles you earn flying Delta that you can redeem for awards. Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) are based on the number of flights. A single segments is a flight between two cities, so if you have 1 layover (such as DTW to ATL to TPA) this will count as two segments since you flew between two cities twice. Lastly, you will earn Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) which are based on how much you spend on Delta flights and many partner flights. Do note that MQDs are U.S.-based only.

When signed in, Delta tells you how many MQMs, MQSs, and MQDs you will receive before you book the flight!

Delta Credit Card holders are able to get their MQD Qualification waived when they spend above a certain threshold. Delta cardholders can spend $25,000 or more on their card during the calendar year to have the MQD qualification waived for Silver, Gold, and Platinum Medallion Status. Spend $250,000 and you can get the MQD qualification for Diamond waived. The Blue Delta Skymiles Card is not eligible for the Medallion Qualification Dollar Waiver. However, if you have another Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card with the Medallion Qualification Dollar Waiver benefit in addition to your Delta Blue SkyMiles Credit Card, Eligible Purchases made on the Blue Delta SkyMiles Credit Card will continue to count towards the MQD Waiver.

The calculator in the table below will give you an idea of how many Skymiles you can earn based on your status in Delta's Medallion Program. Remember that Skymiles are earned off the base fare of the ticket and not the taxes/fees.
