The Barclays Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard is a good card choice for anyone that wants a few great perks specific to Hawaiian Airlines and also earn extra miles. Cardholders will receive triple Hawaiian Miles per $1 spent and receive perks such as first checked bag free, the ability to share miles with family and friends for free, and an annual $100 companion discount. If you're looking to do some serious flying with Hawaiian Airlines, the Hawaiian Mastercard would be a great card to pick up!

Bonus Categories

The Hawaiian Airlines Credit Card features four bonus categories. Those categories are Hawaiian Airline purchases, gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores. There is no limit to the amount of Hawaiian Miles you can earn with this card. Below are the details on the bonus categories.

3x Hawaiian Airlines

Using the Hawaiian Mastercard for Hawaiian Airline purchases will earn you 3 Hawaiian Miles per $1 spent. This will include any purchases made directly through the airline with the exception of Duty Free purchases which will not count towards the triple mile bonus.

Since Hawaiian Miles have a value of about 1 cent each, you're looking at a 3% return on these purchases. While the 3% return can be matched or beat with cards such as the no annual fee Barclay Uber Card which earns 3% cash back and the luxury AMEX Platinum Card which earns a 5% return on airfare and provides excellent benefits, you will not get the perks and benefits that comes with holding the Hawaiian Airlines card such as the free checked bags and $100 Hawaiian Airlines companion certificate. It will come down to whether or not the benefits are worth the lower rate of return.

2x Gas Station

Gas station spending with the Hawaiian Mastercard will earn you 2 Hawaiian Miles per $1 spent. Barclays counts gas stations as merchants whose main purpose is to sell gasoline. This will be places such as Hess, Speedway, BP, and Mobil. Spending in this category is a return of about 2% which is not bad if you're looking to stack up your miles. Cards such as the Bank of America Cash Rewards (3% cash back) and PNC Cash Rewards Card (4% cash back) earn a better return when it comes to gas (the also both earn 2% cash back on grocery). If you're looking for airline cards that earn in the gas station category, check out the JetBlue Card and Asiana Visa Signature Card which both earn double miles and offer great mile earnings on multiple categories and benefits specific to their respective airlines.

2x Restaurant

The Hawaiian Mastercard earns 2 Hawaiian Miles per $1 spent on restaurant purchases. This category includes both fast food and fine dining establishments. There are a great deal of cards that earn a higher rate of return than 2% such as the no annual fee Barclay Uber Card which earns 4% cash back and the no annual fee Capital One SavorOne Card which earns 3% cash back. But if you're looking to earn miles, running restaurant spend through the Hawaiian Mastercard will add a nice amount of miles to your account.

2x Grocery Store

Grocery shopping with the Hawaiian Mastercard will earn you 2 Hawaiian Miles per $1 spent. Barclays specifically excludes Walmart and Target for this spending category. All other places coded as grocery should earn double Hawaiian Miles. When it comes to this category, the best returns can be found on cards such as the AMEX Everyday Preferred (4.5% return) and AMEX Blue Cash Preferred (6% cash back). The Asiana Airlines Card and AAdvantage MileUp Card both offer double miles on grocery purchases as well.

1x Non-Category

Any spending done on the Hawaiian Mastercard outside of the categories listed above will earn 1 Hawaiian Miles per $1 spent. This is a relatively low return. I recommend either finding a card that matches any categories that you spend a great deal in or getting a card that returns at least 1.5% on all purchases. This could be a card such as the Capital One Quicksilver which earns 1.5% cash back and has no annual or foreign transaction fee or point related like the Bank of America Travel Rewards Card which earns 1.5x Bank of America points per $1 spent.

Perks and Benefits

The Hawaiian Mastercard comes with several great benefits that makes it worth considering. This includes free checked bags, annual bonuses, companion tickets, and more. Below are the details of the perks and benefits offered on this card.

First Checked Bag Free

Hawaiian Mastercard holders will be able to check their first bag free of charge. This perk only applies to the cardholder and is the free checked bag does not apply to international flights. The Hawaiian Mastercard must be used to purchase the airfare and the card must be tied to the account as well to receive the benefit.

This is a great perk for anyone that flies solo on flights, but if you travel with a family, checked bag prices could add up. Delta Airlines has six credit cards that grants a complimentary checked bag for the card member and up to eight companion traveling on the same reservation. You also don't need to use the card to purchase the airfare, so you can use other cards you may have that offer a higher return on airfare. While you have to use the card to make the purchase, the American Airline Credit Cards also offer a checked bag for the card member and up to 4 companions on most of their cards.

Annual $100 Companion Discount

Hawaiian Mastercard members will receive a $100 Companion Discount annually good for round-trip coach travel between Hawaii and North America. This discount is given on the card account anniversary (the day the card was opened) and is good for 12 months. The primary cardholder must be on the same flight as the companion in order to use the discount. This is a solid benefit which makes up for the annual fee as long as you use it.

Share Hawaiian Miles

The fee that is normally charged to send and receive Hawaiian Miles from friends and family will be waived for Hawaiian Mastercard holders. Accounts can receive Hawaiian Miles up to a maximum of ten times per calendar year. This is a nice addition to the perks already offered by the card and can be useful if you need to pool points for award travel with family and friends.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard Hawaiian Mastercard sign up bonus is 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 90 days. 50,000 Hawaiian Miles are worth at least $500 but can be worth more or less depending on how you redeem them. The Hawaiian Airlines card also offers a 0% intro APR on balance transfers.

50% Off Companion Discount

New Hawaiian Mastercard members will receive a one-time 50% discount towards one full coach round-trip fare for a companion between Hawaii and North America. This discount is good for 13 months after card opening and could easily be worth the annual fee the first year.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Hawaiian Mastercard is $99. The annual $100 companion pass discount takes care of this cards fee. This still leaves you with great money saving benefits such as the free checked bags and the ability to share miles. It also earns triple miles on Hawaiian Airline purchases. If you find yourself frequently on Hawaiian Air, this card is worth the fee.

Authorized User Fee

The Hawaiian Mastercard does not charge an authorized user fee for adding additional users. If you're trying to earn Hawaiian Miles, adding additional users will be very helpful since it offers double miles on several categories that are usually part of most peoples daily routine.

Foreign Transaction Fee

There is no foreign transaction fee for using the Hawaiian Mastercard outside of the United States. This allows you to earn Hawaiian Miles worldwide and still get the best value since you will not be penalized.
