The Chase Southwest Airlines Premier Credit Card is a great choice for anyone looking to earn a few great Southwest benefits. While not nessecarily the best card for earning Southwest Rapid Rewards Points, this card still offers key perks such as ability to earn Tier Qualifying Miles based off spend and earn anniversary points annually. If the Chase Southwest Priority Card is not your cup of tea, this is the next best thing.

Bonus Categories

The Southwest Airlines Premier Card feature three bonus categories that earn extra Rapid Rewards Points. Those categories are: Southwest Airline purchases, hotels, and rental cars. There is no limit to the amount of Rapid Rewards Points you can earn spending in these categories and your points will not expire as long as the card is opened. If it is closed, points will expire if there isn't flight-earning or Southwest Airlines partner-earning activity at least once every 24 months. Below are the details of the Southwest Premier Card's bonus categories.

2x Southwest Airlines

The Southwest Premier Card earns 2 Rapid Rewards Points per $1 spent on Southwest Airline purchases. This is equal to about a return of 2.8% which is okay. If you're looking to earn more Rapid Rewards Points though, you can do this using Ultimate Rewards Points since they transfer to Southwest (and several other airlines) at a 1:1 ratio. This means you can earn 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on airfare with the Chase Sapphire Reserve and transfer those points to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account.

You can also earn a higher return by using several other cards and booking travel through their portal. This includes the Platinum Card (5%+ return) and Chase Sapphire Reserve Card (4.5%+ return). If you're looking for non-premium cards, the AMEX Gold Card (3%+ return) and Barclay Uber Card (3% return) both earn a solid return as well.

2x Southwest Hotel Partners

Using the Southwest Premier Card for hotel purchases will earn 2 Rapid Rewards Points per $1 spent. This category will only apply to partners of Southwest's Hotel program which consists of:

When it comes to earning on hotels, this earns a decent return that's good for any Southwest credit cardholder. More points can be earned by using the Chase Sapphire Reserve and transferring points to Southwest. If you're loyal to any specific hotel chain, the real winner through is going to usually be a co-branded hotel card. Hotel cards offer great perks such as instant status, bonus points, free nights, and more. For example, the Hyatt Card earns 4x Hyatt Points on their brand of hotels which is a return of about 7.2% since Hyatt Points are valued at 1.8 cents on average. On top of that great earning rate, you will also receive an annual free night, Hyatt Discoverist status which grants complimentary room upgrades, priority check-in, and more. So I do recommend that you check to see if you favorite hotel brand may hold a co-branded card that's worth your time.

2x Southwest Car Rental Partners

Car rentals with the Southwest Premier Card will earn 2 Rapid Rewards Points per $1 spent. As with the hotel category, this bonus ties to specific Southwest Car Rental partners which consist of:

While most rental car companies do have their own loyalty program, they usually do not have a co-branded credit card. So when it comes to paying for a car rental, I recommend using the card that gets you the best return and one that offers primary renters insurance. In terms of points and insurance, the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Ink Business Preferred are the winners. Both cards earning 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on car rentals that transfer to Southwest and both cards offer primary rental insurance meaning you can decline that expensive coverage the car rental agencies try to offer you.

1x Non-Category

Any spending outside of the categories listed above will only earn 1 Rapid Rewards Point per $1 spent. Since Rapid Rewards Points are worth 1.4 cents each on average, using this for non-category purchases can still be mildly useful when it comes to building points. Better returns could be gotten with 2% return cards such as the Citi Double Cash or AMEX Blue Business Card. In terms of points, if you own an Ultimate Rewards Point earning card, you can use cards like the Chase Freedom Unlimited or Chase Ink Business Unlimited to earn 1.5 points on all purchases and transfer those to Southwest for a better return.

Perks and Benefits

Southwest Anniversary Points

Southwest Premier Credit Cardholders will receive an anniversary gift of 6,000 Bonus Rapid Rewards Points after each cardmember anniversary. This means the year beginning with your account open date through the anniversary of your account open date, and each 12 months after that.

Tier Qualifying Points

Southwest Premier Card members will earn 1,500 Tier Qualifying Points for every $10,000 in eligible net purchases on the card. These bonus qualifying points are up to 15,000 points per year. Tier Qualifying Points can be used to count toward qualification for Rapid Rewards A-List or A-List Preferred status as well as obtain Southwest's popular Companion Pass.

Standard Chase Benefits

The Southwest Premier Credit Card comes with the standard Chase credit card perks such as Lost Luggage Reimbursement, Extended Warranty Protection, Baggage Delay Insurance, and Purchase Protection.

Sign Up Bonus

The Southwest Premier Credit Card sign up bonus is 40,000 Rapid Rewards Points after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. This is worth $400+ towards flights and great offer.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Southwest Premier Credit Card is $99. This is the standard pricing point for entry co-branded airline cards similar to the Delta Gold Card and United Explorer Card. The annual 6,000 bonus points you will receive annually are worth about $84 which takes care of most of the fee. Between that bonus, the ability to earn double Southwest points on multiple categories, and the perk of earning Tier Qualifying Point based on spend, you should be able to easily justify the fee if you fly Southwest Airlines.

Authorized User Fee

The authorized user fee for the Southwest Premier Card is $0. If you're looking to accumulate extra Southwest Rapid Rewards Points, I'd recommend adding friends and family to the card.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The foreign transaction fee for the Southwest Premier Card is 0%. This means you can use the Southwest credit card worldwide and earn Rapid Rewards Points no matter where you're at without being penalized a fee for international purchases.
