The Southwest Priority Card is the top card in the Southwest credit card line-up. While it can be outdone in the earning category using the Ultimate Rewards Program, it truly shines for those who fly Southwest often and want to enjoy a few extra benefits. Perks such as 7,500 anniversary points, an annual airline credit, seat upgrades, and savings on in-flight purchases can be very useful. Cardholders can also run spend through the card to earn Tier Qualifying Points to help earn Southwest Elite Status. If you frequently fly Southwest, this is a card you will want to consider.

Bonus Categories

The Southwest Priority Card features three bonus categories which are purchases made with Southwest, Southwest hotel partners, and Southwest car rental partners. There is no limit to the amount of Rapid Rewards Points you can earn spending in these categories and your points will not expire as long as the card is opened. If it is closed, points will expire if there isn't flight-earning or Southwest Airlines partner-earning activity at least once every 24 months. Below are the details of the Southwest Premier Card's bonus categories.

2x Southwest Airlines

The Southwest Priority Card earns 2 Rapid Rewards Points per $1 spent with Southwest Airlines. This is the same earning rate as all of the Southwest credit cards. If you're looking for more points, you can use the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Ink Business Preferred to earn 3 Ultimate Reward Points per $1 spent and then transfer those earned points to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio. If you're looking for a better return, both Chase cards as well as the AMEX Platinum Card and Citi Prestige are all great choices.

2x Southwest Hotel Partners

The Southwest Priority Card earns 2 Rapid Rewards Points per $1 spent with Southwest hotel partners. This applies specifically to the following hotels:

While earning 2 points per $1 isn't too shabby, you can still earn a higher return with the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Ink Business Preferred. Both earn 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent and transfer to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio.

2x Southwest Car Rental Partners

The Southwest Priority Card earns 2 Rapid Rewards Points per $1 spent with Southwest car rental partners. This consists of the following rental car agencies:

Car rental agencies normally does not have co-branded credit cards, so using the Southwest Priority Card to earn miles is a solid choice. As with the other categories, you can earn more with the Reserve and Ink Business Preferred. If you typically rent cars often, it could be more worth your while to charge your car rentals to a card that has primary rental insurance. This lets you waive the expensive fee that most car rental agencies charge you to insure the vehicle. The Ultimate Rewards Point earning Cards and just about all the AMEX Cash Back and AMEX Membership Rewards credit cards offer this benefit. Do note that Chase offers the benefit just by using their card whereas American Express will charge you $19.99 per rental. Both options still come out to be a lot less than $20-$40 per rental day.

1x Non-Category

The Southwest Priority Card earns 1 Rapid Rewards Point on all purchases outside of the categories above. This is a very low return, but this is sadly the highest amount of Southwest Points you can earn on non-category purchases. I recommend placing your non-category purchases on other cards if you can, unless you're really craving Southwest Points.

Perks and Benefits

The Southwest Priority Card comes with several exclusive benefits such as an annual travel credit, upgraded boardings, and cash back on in-flight purchases. The remaining perks are offered on the other Southwest credit cards and are either slightly improved upon or the same.

$75 Annual Travel Credit

Southwest Priority Cardholders will receive $75 in annual travel credit that they can apply to Southwest purchases made throughout their anniversary year. Statement credits will post to your account the same day your Southwest Airlines purchase posts to your account. Do note that Upgraded Boardings and in-flight purchases do not apply to this credit.

4 Upgraded Boardings

Southwest Priority Cardholders will receive 4 upgraded bookings per anniversary year (when available). The upgraded bookings are for positions A1-A15 on Southwest Airlines and can be purchased at the departure gate or ticket counter on the day of travel only. Cardholders will receive a statement credit for the price of the Upgraded Boardings and could take up to 8 weeks to post.

20% Off In-Flight Purchases

Southwest Priority Cardholders will receive 20% off in-flight Southwest purchases when they use their card to pay. This include beverages and in-flight WiFi. If you frequently make purchases onboard Southwest, this card could easily make up for the annual fee.

7,500 Anniversary Points

Southwest Priority Cardholders will receive 7,500 points annually on the cardmember anniversary. These bonus points makes up for a good amount of the card fee. This is higher than the bonuses offered on the other Southwest credit cards.

Tier Qualifying Points

Southwest Priority Cardholders can earn up to 15,000 Tier Qualifying Points per calendar year. Cardholders will earn 1,500 Tier Qualifying Points for every $10,000 in eligible net purchases on the card. This helps speed up the process of obtaining Southwest Elite Status and the popular Southwest Companion Pass.

Standard Chase Benefits

The Southwest Priority Credit Card comes with the standard Chase credit card perks such as Lost Luggage Reimbursement, Extended Warranty Protection, Baggage Delay Insurance, and Purchase Protection.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard sign up bonus for the Southwest Priority Card is 40,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards Points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. This has a cash value of about $560 which isn't bad at all. You'll have to do a little research to squeeze out a free round-trip flight, but it shouldn't require too much depending on airport and dates.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Southwest Priority Card is $149. Between the travel credits offered with the card and the annual 7,500 Rapid Rewards Points, the fee is easily taken care of. Add on the fact that you will save on in-flight purchases and receive four upgraded bookings and it should be a no-brainer for anyone frequently flying Southwest.

Authorized User Fee

There is no authorized user fee for the Southwest Priority Card. This means you can add additional users to help build Southwest Rapid Rewards Points faster.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Southwest Priority Card is a 0% foreign transaction fee. This allows you to use the card overseas without any type of penalty. You will not earn too much in terms of points with international travel spending outside of the given bonus categories, but it doesn't hurt to have a good backup 0% FTF Visa card on hand.
