The Spirit Airlines Mastercard is a co-branded airline card offered by Bank of America. Like it's discontinued business card sibling, it lacks any real perks and does not offer that big of bonus for the already low-valued Free Spirit Miles currency. It even forces you to put heavy spend through the card for a bonus that's barely worth $20. Unless you cherish preferred boarding for Spirit Airlines, I would steer clear of this card and find something that can reward you properly.

Bonus Categories

The Bank of America Spirit Mastercard earns a flat rate of Spirit Free Miles for all purchases. There's no limit to the amount of Free Spirit Miles you can earn with the card. Free Spirit Miles normally expire after three consecutive months of inactivity. Holding the Spirit Airlines Mastercard can help prevent that as long as you make a small purchase and accumulate at least a mile to avoid inactivity.

2x All Purchases

The Spirit Mastercard earns an unlimited 2 Free Spirit Miles per $1 spent on all purchases. Since Free Spirit Miles are only valued at 0.4 cents each, you're not even getting a full return of 1% per $1 spent which is terrible. Picking up this card and making a single purchase to keep Spirit Elite Status can have its perks, but I do not recommend using this card for Spirit Airline ticket purchases. You can earn more than triple that value with other rewards cards such as the Barclay Uber Card which earns 3% cash back on airfare and the Citi Double Cash which earns 2% cash back on all purchases.

Perks and Benefits

Priority Services

Spirit Mastercard cardholders will get Preferred Boarding and Domestic Priority Check-In on Spirit Airlines flights. If there's any reason to even slightly consider getting this card, it would be for the priority services as these can be very useful for any airline.

Annual Point Bonus

Spirit Mastercard cardholders who spend $10,000 or more on this card annually will earn a 5,000 Anniversary Bonus Free Spirit Miles. After hitting the spend goal, you will end up with 25,000 Free Spirit Miles which is worth $100. You can run $10,000 in spend across just about any decent travel reward card with no annual fee an earn $100 or more. A 1.5% cash back card like the Chase Freedom Unlimited will earn you $150 with ease and it has no annual fee.

Reduced Award Flights

Spirit Mastercard cardholders will earn access to special Reduced Award Flight redemption levels. This could be useful for anyone that has accumulated enough Free Spirit Miles to purchases an award flight, but would like to save some points. One-way flights with Spirit start at 2,500 Free Spirit Miles which can be earned in a single round-trip flight for anyone earning 100% of there flown miles with Spirit Elite Status.

Spirit Elite Status

Spirit Mastercard cardholders will be able to earn Spirit Elite Status by making one card purchase per month. Earning elite status with Spirit is beneficial to earning 100% of your miles flown with their airline. If you fly Spirit a few times per year and can't maintain status, this is one of the main reasons to have the card

Sign Up Bonus

The standard Spirit Mastercard sign up bonus is 30,000 miles. This has a cash value of about $120, but can be redeemed for as many as 12 one-way trips (plus taxes) if you can find awards at their starting price of 2,500 Free Spirit Miles.

Credit Card Fees

Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Spirit Mastercard is $0 the first year, then $59. If you cherish the priority boarding at $59, then it could be worth it if you fly Spirit consistently during the year. Otherwise, this card is not worth the fee in my opinion.

Authorized User Fee

There is no authorized user fee for the Spirit Mastercard. If you're going all in for Spirit Free Miles, adding friends and family to your card can assist in building up your balance.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Spirit Mastercard has a foreign transaction fee of 0%. Spending on this card outside of the United States will still allow you to build your Free Spirit Miles, but I recommend running international spend on cards with better rewards.
