Off-Peak Pricing

Fly Spirit frequently? You'll want to have the Spirit Mastercard. Redemptions start at 2,500 miles for cardholders which significantly boosts value.

The Spirit Mastercard is co-branded airline card offered by Bank of America. If Spirit is your primary airline, you'll want to pick up the Spirit Mastercard due to the access to 2,500-point redemptions and the complimentary Spirit elite status it offers just from making one purchase per month. If you faithfully collect Spirit Miles and don't have this card, you'll be cheating yourself out of redeeming your Spirit Miles for as high as 1.2 cents or more.

Bonus Categories

The Bank of America Spirit Mastercard earns a flat rate of Spirit Miles for all purchases. There's no limit to the amount of Spirit Miles you can earn with the card. Spirit Miles normally expire after three consecutive months of inactivity. Holding the Spirit Airlines Mastercard can help prevent that as long as you make a small purchase to accumulate at least 1 mile to avoid inactivity.

2x All Purchases

The Spirit Mastercard will earn you 2 Spirit Miles per $1 spent on all purchases. As a cardholder, you'll be able to redeem miles at a significantly higher value than non-cardholders. With off-peak pricing, you can easily squeeze 1.2 cents or more in value out of Spirit Miles which means generally spending will give you at least a 2.4% return or higher.

If you're redeeming your Spirit Miles at normal pricing (or worse), you'll get around 0.4 cents or lower in value out of your miles which means you'll be earning a terrible return. It really all comes down to how you plan on redeeming your points. If you're not going to stick to redeeming rewards for off-peak pricing, this is not a credit card you'll want to use.

Perks and Benefits

The most important benefits that the Spirit Mastercard offers is the Reduced Award Flights benefit and complimentary elite status. Those two perks alone are the bread and butter of this credit card.

Reduced Award Flights

As a Spirit Mastercard holder, you'll receive access to Reduced Award Flights. Redemptions will start at 2,500-miles for off-peak one-way Region 1 awards which can easily give your Spirit Miles 1.2 cents each or higher in value due to being 1/4th the cost of normal award pricing. This is the primary reason for picking up this credit card. If you don't plan on sticking to off-peak pricing for most of your redemptions, Spirit Miles will have minimal value and you'd be better off using a credit card that's great for general airline spend.

Spirit Elite Status

The Spirit Mastercard will grant you complimentary Spirit Elite Status as long as you make one purchase on the card per month. Earning elite status is essential with Spirit Airlines as this is the only way you will earn 100% of your flown miles. Without elite status, you'll earn 50% of your flown miles which means you would only earn 500 Spirit Miles if you were to fly a distance of 1,000 miles.

Priority Services

You will receive Zone 2 boarding as a Spirit Mastercard holder and you'll receive domestic priority check-in on Spirit Airlines flights. Priority services are always helpful if you're one for getting through lines and getting to your seat faster.

Annual Point Bonus

When you run $10,000 in spend across the Spirit Mastercard during the calendar year, you will be award 5,000 bonus miles. This means you would end up with a total of 25,000 Spirit Miles when combine the 2x earnings and bonus miles which can have a value of $300 if you can redeem your miles for at least 1.2 cents each which is not bad at all.

If you're redeeming your points at anything other than off-peak pricing, you'll this annual bonus will not be worth it in the slightest bit.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard Spirit Mastercard sign up bonus is 30,000 Spirit Miles. You'll earn 15,000 Spirit Miles after your first purchase and an additional 15,000 Spirit Miles after you spend $500 on the card within the first 90 days of account opening.

In terms of cash, you're looking at either 1.2 cents or more per mile or an average of 0.4 cents per mile depending on how you redeem your Spirit Miles. On the high end you're looking at a cash value of $360 and on the low end you're looking at $120 in cash value.

In terms of flights, you can obtain 12 one-way trips at off-peak pricing at the 2,500-point redemption level. Standard and peak pricing redemptions will get you 1-3 flights out of this bonus.
