The United MileagePlus Club Explorer Business Card is a solid choice for any business owner that wants to earn some extra United Miles while receiving a few benefits. It earns bonus miles on United airfare, restaurants, gas stations, and office supply stores. In addition to that, the Explorer Business Card offers a free checked bag, the chance to earn bonus miles based on spend, and priority boarding.

Bonus Categories

The United Explorer Business Card has 4 bonus categories that earn extra MileagePlus Miles. Those categories are United Airlines purchases, restaurants, gas stations, and office supply stores. There is no limit to the amount of United Miles you can earn spending in these categories. Below are the details of each bonus category featured on the Explorer Business Card.

2x United Airlines

United Airlines purchases on the United Explorer Business Card will earn 2 MileagePlus Miles per $1 spent. This includes United airline tickets (purchased directly with United), seat upgrades, in-flight food, beverages, Wi-Fi, baggage service charges and other United fees. This does not include United Cruises, MileagePlus X, DIRECTV, and Merchandise Awards.

Earning double miles a solid earning rate for anyone looking to build their United Miles balance. If you're looking to accelerate your United Miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards Program is a 1-to-1 transfer partner of United Airlines. This allows you to use cards like the Chase Ink Business Preferred Card to earn United Miles at a faster rate. Earn triple Ultimate Rewards Points on categories like travel and shipping with the Ink Business Preferred and easily transfer those over to your United MileagePlus account.

2x Restaurant

Restaurant spending with the United Explorer Business Card will earn 2 MileagePlus Miles per $1 spent. These purchases must be coded as restaurant. This usually applies to merchants whose primary business is sit-down or eat-in dining, including fast food restaurants as well as fine dining establishments.

This another good category to earn some additional United MileagePlus Miles. The only card that can generate a higher amount of United Miles is the Chase Sapphire Reserve which is luxury card that earns 3x on dining and travel. The Sapphire Reserve is packed with benefits that makes it worth being the only travel card you need, but if you're not in the market for premium card, the United Explorer Business Card will do just fine.

In terms of return per $1 spent on restaurant and dining, there are a few options. The Hilton Business Card offers 6x Hilton Honors Points on dining which is a return of 3.6% since their points are worth about 0.6 cents on average. Two other great business card options are the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Card or Marriott Bonvoy Business Card in which both earn 4 Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent which is a return of 2.8% at a value of 0.7 cents per point.

2x Gas Stations

The United Explorer Business Card earns 2 MileagePlus Miles per $1 spent at gas stations. This will consist of merchants that sell automotive gasoline that can be paid for either at the pump or inside the station, and may or may not sell other goods or services at their location.

Earning double United Miles on gas station purchases generates a solid return. The Chase Ink Business Preferred can earn you an additional mile since it earns 3x Ultimate Rewards Points on travel, but otherwise the Explorer Business Card offers a decent amount of miles for anyone looking to build their MileagePlus Miles balance.

If you're looking for a higher return in terms of bang for your buck, the Bank of America Business Advantage Travel Rewards Card earns 3% cash back on gas stations and both the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Card and Marriott Bonvoy Business Card offer 4 Marriott Bonvoy Points per $1 spent which is a return of at least 2.8%.

2x Office Supply Stores

Office Supply Store purchases with the United Explorer Business Card will earn 2 MileagePlus Miles per $1 spent at office supply stores. These are generally merchants that specialize in selling a variety of office supplies, from larger office supply stores to smaller stationary stores.

If you're looking for the best return on Office Supply Stores, the Chase Ink Business Cash Card offers 5% cash back on Office Supply Store purchases. If you have an Ultimate Rewards Point earning card, this 5% cash back can be redeemed as 5x Ultimate Rewards Points which can then be transfered to 5 United MileagePlus Miles. So basically you'll be earning 5x miles per $1 spent if you transferred these points to your United account. As you can see from all the categories above, United Miles and the Ultimate Rewards Program goes hand-in-hand.

1x Non-Category

Any spending on the United MileagePlus Explorer Business Card outside of the categories above will earn you 1 MileagePlus Mile per $1 spent. Since United Miles have a strong value of at least 1.4 cents per mile, it's not a bad idea to put non-category spend on the card if your main focus is United Miles. A slightly higher amount of miles can be earned with the Chase Ink Business Unlimited Card which earns 1.5x Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent. If you have an Ultimate Rewards point earning card, this will allow you to transfer the points over to miles which will equate to earning 1.5x MileagePlus Miles per $1 spent.

Perks and Benefits

Bonus United Miles

Spending $25,000 on the United Explorer Business Credit Card in a calendar year will earn a bonus of 10,000 United Miles. This is about an average value of $140 when redeemed for airfare, but could be worth more or less depending on how you use your MileagePlus miles.

Free Checked Bag

When the United Explorer Business Card is used to pay for United airfare, the cardholder and up to one companion traveling on the same reservation will receive their first checked bags free (standard size bag). Authorized users are only eligible if they are on the same reservation as the primary card member. A few airlines do not require you to use their co-branded card such as the Delta Cards.

Priority Boarding

United Explorer Business card members and their companions traveling on the same reservation will have priority boarding. They will be invited to board United-operated flights before general boarding.

Complimentary Upgrades

United Explorer Business Card holders that are MileagePlus Premier® members traveling on an award ticket can take advantage of Complimentary Premier Upgrades on United-operated flights (when available). This a great benefit for loyal United customers who still want the chance to be upgraded on award flights.

Standard Chase Benefits

The United Explorer Business Card comes with the standard Chase Credit Card Travel Benefits such as Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption Insurance, Baggage Delay Insurance, Purchase Protection, Extended Warranty Protection, and much more.

Sign Up Bonus

The sign up bonus for the Chase United Business Explorer Credit Card sits at 50,000 United Miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months. United has an Interactive Travel Destination Award Chart to help find out how far their miles can take you. You can also use the United MileagePlus Calculators to calculate the cash value of any amount of miles.

Credit Card Fees

Fees
Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The United MileagePlus Explorer Business Card has an annual fee of $0 for first year, then $95. This is the standard for entry level reward cards. If you use this card for the free checked bags perk, this card will pay for itself after a few flights. If you already receive free checked bags due to having United Premier Status or plan on using a different rewards card to earn more miles or a better return, this card may be harder to justify paying the annual fee.

Authorized User Fee

The authorized user fee for the United MileagePlus Explorer Business Card is $0. I would recommend adding employees, friends, and family members to help build your United Miles. This will also help in reaching the $25,000 spend for the 10,000 bonus miles.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The United MileagePlus Explorer Business Card has a foreign transaction fee of 0%. This allows you to use the Explorer Business Card worldwide and earn additional United Miles without being penalized a fee for transactions outside of the United States.
