Review the details of the HSBC Advance Mastercard, calculate how many HSBC Points you can earn based on spend, and compare against top rewards cards.

The HSBC Advance Mastercard is a solid card that earn bonus points on dining and entertainment purchases. The card features an introductory earning rate that will earn you 3x across both categories and 2x on non-category purchases on the first $25,000 in spend during the first 12 months the account is opened. Along with the good intro rates, you'll also receive special discounts, complimentary memberships, and more.

In order to obtain the HSBC Advance Mastercard, you must have an HSBC Advance or Premier checking account relationship. The requirements for these accounts are listed below. Without an Advance or Premier checking account, you will not be able to obtain most of HSBC's credit cards.

HSBC Advance Checking
Must meet at least one requirement.

  • Maintain combined balances in U.S. Dollar personal deposits accounts and investment* balances of at least $5,000
  • Maintain a recurring direct deposit from a third party to an HSBC Advance checking account once per calendar month
  • Maintain an HSBC U.S. residential mortgage loan

HSBC Premier Checking
Must meet at least one requirement.

  • Have at least $75,000 in total deposits and/or investments
  • Have at least $5,000 in total direct deposits per month
  • Maintain U.S. residential mortgage loan with an original loan amount of at least $500,000

Bonus Categories

The HSBC Advance Mastercard features two categories that earn bonus points. Those two categories are dining and entertainment purchases. During the first 12 months of having the card, you will earn an additional point per $1 spent on the first $25,000 in purchases made on the card as part of an introductory period. After you've hit the $25,000 threshold or 12 months have past since you've opened the card, the introductory bonus points will end and you will earn at the normal bonus multipliers.

There is no limit to the amount of bonus points you can earn at the non-introductory rate spending in both categories and no limit to the amount of points you can earn with the card in general.

3x-2x Dining

The HSBC Advance Mastercard earns 2 HSBC Points per $1 spent on dining purchases with the ability to earn up to a total of 3 HSBC Points per $1 during the introductory period. Dining purchases count as fast food, sit-down restaurants, fine dining establishments, and some food delivery services depending on how they code.

3x-2x Entertainment

The HSBC Advance Mastercard earns 2 HSBC Points per $1 spent on entertainment purchases with the ability to earn up to a total of 3 HSBC Points per $1 spent during the introductory period. Entertainment purchases include amusement parks, movie theaters, bowling alleys, zoos, and other ticket-type events.

2x-1x Non-Category

The HSBC Advance Mastercard earns 1 HSBC Points per $1 on all non-category purchases with the chance to earn up to a total of 2 HSBC Points per $1 spent during the introductory period. Earning 1 HSBC Point per $1 spent is a little on the low side, but if you're in the market for earning HSBC Points, this is the best you'll get. You'll benefit the most from non-category purchases made during the introductory period.

Perks and Benefits

The HSBC Advance Mastercard features a good amount of benefits (mostly offered by Mastercard) that consists of discounts, complimentary membership, and travel perks. The benefits found on this card are the same as those found on HSBC's other credit cards such as the HSBC Cash Rewards Mastercard.

MasterRental Coverage

You'll receive protection protection for physical damage and theft to most rental vehicles with the MasterRental Coverage provided by the HSBC Advance Mastercard. This can be a useful benefit if you're looking a little bit more protection when renting cars.

MasterCard Travel & Lifestyle Services

The HSBC Advance Mastercard will grant you access to Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services. This benefit offers luxury travel perks, amenities, and upgrades at some travel destinations. These services can be accessed through phone, email, and online platforms.

The card also offers a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months from account opening.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The HSBC Advance Mastercard has a $0 annual fee for Advance and Premier clients which means while you're always earn a positive return on your card spend.

If you're no longer an Advance or Premier client, the card will cost $45 annually. In my opinion, the card will not be worth it at that point as there's plenty of no-annual fee cards that earn similar or better rates than the HSBC Advance Mastercard.

Authorized User Fee

The HSBC Advance Mastercard does not have an authorized user fee. I recommend adding family and friends if they spend across any of the categories featured on the card.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The HSBC Advance Mastercard does not have a foreign transaction fee. This means you can earn HSBC Points internationally without worrying about being penalized.
