AMEX Business Gold Card Point Calculator
Calculate total Membership Rewards Points based on your spend across the AMEX Business Gold Card and compare the results against hundreds of rewards cards.
The Business Gold Card's bonus categories has the chance to change from month to month. This is because your bonus will be based on the two categories in which you spend the most money in per month. That means the Business Gold Card will adjust to give you the highest return per month which is great. If you're a business that can run heavy spend through the six bonus categories available on the card, you'll easily find yourself swimming in Membership Rewards Points.
The AMEX Business Gold Card features six possible bonus categories. Those categories are airfare, advertisement, gas stations, shipping, restaurant, and computer hardware, software, or cloud computing. Out of these six categories, you will receive 4 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent in the two categories you spend the most in per month. This means the two categories you earn 4x points in may change monthly depending on your spend. Regardless of the categories you spend the most in, the 4x earning has a $150,000 per year combined cap. After you hit this cap you will earn 1 Membership Rewards Point per $1 spent on all purchases.
Airfare purchased with the AMEX Business Gold must be for a scheduled flight on a passenger carrier and purchased directly from the airline. This bonus category will not be triggered by vacation packages, charter or private flights, or airfare purchased through a third party (such as Orbitz or Expedia).
U.S. Gas Stations
Gas station purchased made on the AMEX Business Gold Card must be located in the U.S. and be a merchant that has a primary business of selling gasoline. That means that wholesale clubs and grocery stores that sell gas, such as Walmart or Meijer, will not be eligible for this bonus category.
The U.S. shipping category is only for U.S. courier, postal, and freight shipping services. That includes, but is not limited to, businesses such as FedEx, UPS, and the United State Postal Service (USPS). This will not apply to shipping costs for online purchases (such as paying shipping at an online store like Ebay or Saks Fifth Avenue).
American Express tends to offer superb discounts and bonus points on shipping purchases (primarily FedEx). Earning 4 points per $1 spent on top of discounts and bonus points can be very useful for anyone that spends heavy in the U.S. shipping category.
The U.S. advertisement bonus category applies to U.S. purchases of online, television, and radio advertising made on the AMEX Business Gold Card. These purchases must also be directly through the media provider. This includes, but not limited to, advertisers such as Facebook, Google, NBC National Broadcasting, and CBS Radio.
The U.S. restaurants category applies to fast food, fine dining, and other establishments coded as restaurant that are located in the United States. Do note that this category will not trigger on U.S. owned restaurants in other countries (such as Hard Rock Cafe). Both the AMEX Gold and AMEX Green cards earn bonus Membership Rewards Points on restaurants worldwide.
U.S. Computer Hard/Software/Cloud
The computer hardware, software, or cloud computing software category applies to a specific list of U.S. companies. Any spending outside of the companies listed below will not qualify for this category. AMEX considers the following companies for this bonus category:
- Sage Software
- Tiger Direct
Business Gold Cardholders will earn 1 Membership Reward Point per $1 spent on the remaining four categories that do not meet the qualifications for the 4x bonus and on any spend that doesn't fall within the six category listed above.
+1x AMEX Travel Portal
Business Gold Cardholders will receive 1 additional Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent on the American Express Travel Portal. This will give you a total of 2 points per $1 spent since you'll also earn 1 point for non-category spending. If you spend heavy on the American Express Travel website, I recommend picking up either the Blue Business Plus Card which can earn 2-3 points per $1 or either the American Express Platinum Card or AMEX Business Platinum in which both cards earn 5x on airfare and hotel purchases per $1 spent made through the portal.
Perks and Benefits
The AMEX Business Gold features offers one primary benefit which is the 25% point rebate on airfare purchases made through the AMEX Travel Portal.
25% Point Rebate
Airfare purchases made through the American Express Travel Portal will be eligible for a 25% point rebate. This is a great bonus to the card which bumps the value of Membership Rewards Points up to about 1.3 cents each. Do note that you must have enough points to purchase the airfare ticket at its normal/face value. After about a month, 25% of those points will be returned to your account. A higher point rebate of 35% is offered on the American Express Business Platinum Card and those with the American Express Business Centurion Card receive a 50% rebate.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for the AMEX Business Gold Card is 50,000 Membership Rewards Points after spending $5,000 on the card within the first 3 months. This is worth at about $650+ when you redeem your points for airfare and use the 25% rebate. This can also be worth as much as $1,000 when transferred to AMEX's airline partners.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The annual fee for the AMEX Business Gold Card is $295 annually. This card offers no annual credits to offset that value, so you'll want to make sure you're running decent spend through the card. If you're big on FedEx, the card will pay for itself as it offers more than $295 in savings throughout the year through AMEX Offers alone. If you manage to hit the $150,000 cap on the 4x categories, you would be looking at 600,000 Membership Rewards Points which has a value of $6,000 to $7,800+. If you value Membership Rewards Points at 1.3 cent each (25% rebate value), you would have to spend $473 per month in the 4x categories to cover the annual fee.
Authorized User Fee
The authorized user fee on the AMEX Business Gold Card is $0. This means you can add employees (or friends/family) without any charge to you. I highly recommend adding additional users to help max out the 4x bonus categories.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The Business Rewards Gold Card has a 0% foreign transaction fee. While it is great that you will not be charged a penalty for international purchases, most of these categories are tied to the United States so you will not earn anything more than 1 Membership Reward Point per $1 spent.
You can use this rewards calculator to calculate how many points, miles, or cash back you can earn based on your spend per category. This calculator will also give you the dollar value of the card based on rewards earned and how much each benefit is worth to you minus the fees. You can click the Compare A Card button to compare this card against another card in the same calculator.
All category spend entered in the primary card's column will carry over to all credit card pages on the site so you don't have to re-enter the same information over again.
