The AMEX Everyday Card is great card for anyone that wants to earn Membership Rewards Points for grocery spending without bothering with an annual fee. It's commonly compared to the Everyday Preferred Card which is the annual fee version. The difference between both cards is an extra bonus category and, of course, more points.

American Express Membership Rewards Points are easily redeemable for 1 cent each, but can be worth up to 2 cents or more. The best value of Membership Rewards Points occurs when they are transferred to airline and hotel travel partners. Membership Rewards Points can also be redeemed for airfare, hotels, cruises on the AMEX Travel Portal, statement credits, at top retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon during checkout, and much more. The full list of earning partners as well as point redemption calculator, point transfer/conversion calculators, and the list of all available Membership Rewards Point earning cards can be found on our Membership Rewards Points Calculator page. The calculators on that page will convert any amount of Membership Rewards Points to the dollar value for every redemption available.

Bonus Categories

The AMEX Everyday Card features only one bonus category which focuses solely on grocery. There is a cap of $6,000 in spend on the grocery category. There is no limit to the amount of Membership Rewards Points you can earn using this card. Below are the details of the bonus categories featured on the Everyday Card.

2x U.S. Grocery/Supermarket

Running card spend through the grocery category with the AMEX Everyday Card will earn you 2x Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. This is capped at a max of $6,000 a year. After you surpass that cap, grocery purchases will only earn a single point per $1 spent. The grocery store must be located in the U.S. and focus on the selling of a wide variety of food and household products. This includes, but not limited to, stores such as Meijer, Giant Eagle, Vons, and Winn-Dixie. Even some online supermarkets such as FreshDirect will be eligible for this 2x bonus category. Superstores, convenience stores, and warehouse clubs are NOT considered supermarkets and will not be eligible for this bonus category. This means store such as Amazon, Walmart, and Target will not count towards this category.

The only Membership Rewards Point earning card that earns more on grocery is the annual fee version, the Everyday Preferred Card. It earns 3x on supermarket purchases with the same cap of $6,000 a year. Depending on how much you spend on grocery, this card could be of more value.

1x Non-Category

All non-bonus category purchases will earn a single point. A better return could be made using the Blue Business Plus Card since it will earn 2x Membership Rewards Points. The second best card would be the Everyday Preferred Card which is the annual fee version of the Everyday Card.

+1 AMEX Travel Portal

The AMEX Everyday Card earns an additional bonus point on all purchases made on the American Express travel portal. This is a standard feature of all Membership Rewards Points earning cards. Only three other cards offer a higher rate on AMEX Travel. Those cards consist of The Platinum Card and The Business Platinum Card which both earn 5 points on non-prepaid Airfare and Hotel purchases on the travel portal and the Blue Business Plus card which earns a total of 3 points per $1 on the portal due to the 2x bonus on all purchases up to $50,000.

Perks and Benefits

20% Bonus Category

The main benefit of the AMEX Everyday Card is the 20% point bonus earned after making 20 qualifying purchases within that billing period. Those bonus points will be added to the total amount of points along with the points earned through normal spend. Meeting this spend goal bumps the earnings on grocery purchases up to 2.4 points per $1 spent. This gives the bonus category a return of at least, you guessed it, 2.4%.

Standard AMEX Perks

The AMEX Everyday Card also features the standard American Express Credit Card perks such as, but not limited to, AMEX Offers, access to AMEX presale tickets, return protection, roadside assistance, complimentary ShopRunner membership, extended warranty, purchase protection, and travel accident insurance.

Sign Up Bonus

The standard AMEX Everyday Card sign up bonus is around 10,000 to 15,000 Membership Rewards Points which is a value of about $100 to $150 depending on how they're redeemed. Welcome bonuses as high as 20,000 Membership Rewards Points ($200+ value) have also been offered. Using private/incognito browsing can sometimes get the higher AMEX sign up bonuses to appear..

Recommended Cards

The Everyday Card is a solid option for anyone looking to earn some Membership Rewards Points on grocery for the low annual fee of $0, but there are better options in both the point and cash back world of credit cards. Below are some of those options!

Everyday Preferred

A common question is which is better? The AMEX Everyday or the AMEX Everyday Preferred? Well it comes down to how much you value Membership Rewards Points and how much you spend in groceries. Membership Rewards Points have an easy value of 1 cent each, but they can be worth more if you transfer them to AMEX travel partners. If you take the easy value, the cards will start to even out at $380 per month ($4,560 per year) in grocery spend. Once you go over that amount, the Everyday Preferred will start to become the better card. And that's just for a 1 cent value. If you value Membership Rewards Points at higher rate like I do, the Preferred version will be of even greater value!

Blue Cash Cards versus Everyday Cards

The cash back version of the Everyday Cards are the Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred. They follow the same structure as the Everyday family with the preferred version earning more cash back at the cost of an annual fee. The Blue Cash Everyday earns 3% cash back on grocery while the Blue Cash Preferred earns a whopping 6% cash back on grocery, both with a $6,000 cap on bonus grocery spend. The Blue Cash cards also feature bonus categories of gas station and department stores as well. If Membership Rewards Points are worth only 1 cent each, the Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred will be the clear winners since it require spending $24,000 and $68,000 a year to beat both cards respectively. AMEX's points would have to be worth at least 1.3 cents each to you in order to hold any type of competition with the Blue Cash cards.

Travel Reward Programs

If you're looking to earn in the grocery category, but would like to apply it directly towards travel, several hotel and airline programs provide bonus categories of grocery. This includes the Chase IHG Club Premier Card which earns IHG Points, the Citi AAdvantage MileUp Card which earns miles with American Airlines, and the Hilton Honors Card which earns Hilton Honors Points.
