AMEX Green Card
The American Express Green Card is a great choice for anyone looking to earn big on travel and dining purchases. This is the first (and currently the only) AMEX card to feature a general 'travel' category which makes the card comparable to the Chase Sapphire Cards. If you're looking to earn great amount of Membership Rewards Points on flights, hotels, transit, ridesharing and other travel purchases, you'll want to consider making the AMEX Green Card a part of your wallet.
The AMEX Green Card features two bonus categories which are travel and restaurants. There is no cap on the amount of bonus points you can earn spending in both categories and no limit to the amount of points you can earn with the AMEX Green Card overall.
Travel purchases made on the AMEX Green Card will earn 3 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. American Express defines travel purchases on the AMEX Green Card to be:
- Car Rentals
- Rideshare Services
- Third Party Travel Websites
Do note that purchases made on the American Express Travel Portal will also earn a total of 3 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. You will not earn the additional point that you used to earn when using this card for purchases on the portal.
Restaurant purchases made on the AMEX Green Card will earn 3 Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent. Restaurant purchases include fast food and fine dining establishments made worldwide. This does not include bars, nightclubs, cafeterias, and convience stores (unless they code as restaurant purchases).
Purchases made on the AMEX Green Card that are not categorized as travel or restaurant purchases will earn 1 Membership Rewards Point per $1 spent. There are better AMEX credit cards for non-category purchases.
Perks and Benefits
$100 CLEAR Credit
The AMEX Green Card comes with an annual $100 credit that can be used towards CLEAR. This credit will trigger automatically once you pay for your CLEAR membership with the AMEX Green Card. CLEAR allows you to (usually) zoom through security at select airports and stadiums worldwide.
$100 LoungeBuddy Credit
The AMEX Green Card comes with an annual $100 LoungeBuddy credit. Loudgebuddy allows you to purchase one-time lounge passes, on-demand, when you need them. This can be useful for anyone who only seeks out lounge access a few times per year who don't already have Priority Pass.
No Personal Spending Limit (NPSL)
The AMEX Green Card is a charge card which means it has no preset spending limit (NPSL). No preset spending limit does not mean unlimited spending. Purchasing power adjusts with the use of the Card, the payment history, credit record and financial resources known to AMEX along with other factors.
Standard AMEX Perks
The AMEX Green Card features the standard American Express Credit Card perks such as, but not limited to, AMEX Offers, access to AMEX presale tickets, return protection, roadside assistance, complimentary ShopRunner membership, extended warranty, purchase protection, and travel accident insurance.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for the AMEX Green Card is 30,000 Membership Rewards Points after you spend $2,000 on the card within the first 3 months of card membership. This is easy worth $300 when redeeming directly with AMEX, but can be worth as much as $600+ when transferred to airline and hotel partners or worth less when redeemed for gift cards or checkout at Amazon.com.
Those who sign up for the revamped AMEX Green Card by January 15th, 2020 will also receive $100 in statement credits for purchases made directly with Away (luggage) when using the card within the first 3 months of card membership.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The annual fee for the AMEX Green Card is $150. If you make use of the $100 CLEAR Credit and the $100 Loungebuddy credit, you could easy cover the fee and some. In my opinion, anyone who spends a decent amount of money per year on travel and dining should be able to easily make up the fee.
Authorized User Fee
The AMEX Green Card does not have an authorized user fee. If you have friends and family that spend in the categories of travel and dining, adding them to the AMEX Green Card can easily be worth it to help build points faster.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The AMEX Green Card has no foreign transaction fee which easily makes it one of the best choices for earning Membership Rewards Points on international travel and dining purchases.
