AMEX Platinum and Business Platinum Authorized User Benefits
Details on the perks, benefits, and fees of adding authorized users to the AMEX Platinum and Business Platinum Cards. Compare both cards side by side.
When it comes to adding authorized users, most reward cards only offer the best card perks to the primary cardholder leaving the sole purpose of authorized users to help build points, miles, or cash back. That's where the American Express Platinum Card and American Express Business Card differ from the standard reward cards. Both of these cards offer the ability to add additional Platinum Cards to the account which allows the authorized user to experience elite travel perks and benefits. This is an easy and cheaper way to give friends, family, or employees the luxury of travel without paying the annual fee of another Platinum or Business Platinum Card.
Authorized User Fees
The authorized user fee to add additional Platinum Cards to the Platinum and Business Platinum card can be pricey, but can be worth it due to the amount of benefits the user will receive.
Platinum Authorized User Fee
The authorized user fee for the American Express Platinum Card is $175 per year for the first three additional Platinum Cards. This means three family members or friends can enjoy Platinum Card perks at the cost of around $59 each which is a fantastic deal. Do note that whether you add one authorized user or three authorized users, you will still dish out that additional $175 fee. So the best thing to do is to try to add up to 3 people.
If you're thinking about adding more than 3 additional Platinum Cards, every additional Platinum card after the first three is $175 each. Whether or not it's worth $175 for the 4th user on, is based on how much they can squeeze out of the card benefits. Complimentary lounge access, elite status with hotels, car rental benefits, Platinum concierge, and other perks can easily be worth $175 annually if the user partakes in it.
Business Platinum Authorized User Fee
The authorized user fee for the American Express Business Platinum Card is $300 per additional Business Platinum Card. This is significantly more than the price of adding users to the personal Platinum Card. Whether or not you add additional Platinum Cards to the Business Platinum will depend on if each employee, family member, or friend can squeeze out $300 in value. If you're looking at it from a business standpoint, this can still be a great value for employees if your company does a lot of travel. If you're looking at the card from a personal stand point (as in non-business use), you will have to run the numbers and find out if it's worth the $300 price tag.
The primary reason (in my opinion) to adding authorized users to both the Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card is that authorized users will have access to all of the lounge perks. This includes Centurion Lounges, Delta SkyClub Lounges (when traveling on Delta metal), Priority Pass Lounges, and Airspace Lounges. This means everyone can experience good food ranging from finger foods to full meals, complimentary beverages and alcohol, bathroom and shower facilities, complimentary wifi and business services, and other perks that can make travel much more relaxing. Just be sure that you're adding users that will actually use these services. For example, I added my wife, mom, and sister since we travel the most (dad doesn't fly).
Global Entry and TSA PreCheck
It's not a premium luxury card without the statement credit for TSA PreCheck and Global Entry, right? As you know (or maybe don't know), this perk is offered on many cards to the point where most people have more statement credits than they can use. Platinum and Business Platinum card authorized users will receive their own statement credit of up to $100 towards the TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fee. This statement credit is on each additional Platinum card and the authorized user will have to use their own specific Platinum card to pay for the application fee. Paying for the application fee on the same Platinum Card will not generate a credit after the statement credit has already been triggered for that card. Do note that the applicant applying for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry does not have to be the cardholder and it does not matter whether or not the applicant is approved for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. If a $100 charge for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application has hit the account, it triggers a statement credit (usually) within 2 days. So if the statement credit is not used on a particular card, it can be used to pay the application fee for a different family member, friend, or complete stranger.
Platinum and Business Platinum authorized users will earn complimentary gold elite status with the Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors programs. Authorized users will need to call the number on the back of their Platinum Card to add the status to their existing accounts with both programs.
Marriott Gold Status
Marriott Elite Gold comes with a 25% bonus on Marriott Bonvoy Points, 2pm priority late checkout, a hotel welcome gift of points, enhanced complimentary in-room internet and enhanced room upgrades (such as corner rooms or rooms with a nice view). This status is normally obtained after staying 25 nights but can be earned by putting heavy spend through or holding several of Marriott's credit cards:
Hilton Gold Status
Hilton Gold comes with an earning rate of 18 Hilton Honors Points per $1 spent, complimentary room upgrades, unlimited milestone bonuses, continental breakfast, two complimentary bottles of water, access to the point saving 5th Night Free Perk, and Elite Rollover nights. Hilton Gold is obtained after 20 Stays, 40 Nights, or 75,000 Hilton Honor Base Points in a calendar year. It can also be obtained by using Hilton credit cards:
AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts
AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts is another great perk that both Platinum and Business Platinum authorized users have access to. Booking through the AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts portal will grant perks to luxury hotels worldwide. This includes late checkout, room upgrades upon arrival, on-site credit or benefit (such as a $100 spa credit), and much more.
Platinum and Business Platinum authorized users will have access to Boingo Wifi Hotspots. There are over 1 million Boingo hotspots around the world so this can be a lifesaver if you're somewhere with limited internet or just want be on a secured network. Users will need to enroll through the website. You will need your card number to verify your Platinum Card and to sign up for an account. While I have not used this perk as much as the others, it can be really beneficial for anyone that needs access to internet.
Boingo will be removed as a card benefit January 1st, 2020. Those who are currently signed up will have their Boingo Preferred Plan access through June 30th, 2020. AMEX Cardholders will no longer have access on and after July 1st, 2020.
Membership Reward Point Earning
Authorized users of the Platinum and Business Platinum cards will be able to earn reward points at the same rate as the primary cardholder. This allows points to be earned faster if you have users that spend on airfare and hotels.
AMEX Platinum 5x Bonus Categories
The personal Platinum Card earns 5x Membership Rewards Points on airfare purchased directly with the airline and 5x Membership Rewards Points on airfare & hotels booked through the American Express Travel Site. This gives you a little bit more flexibility over the Business Platinum Card since you're not tied to only using the travel portal. Authorized users of the Platinum Card will also earn 5x on these bonus categories
AMEX Business Platinum 5x Bonus Categories
Business Platinum and authorized users of the Business Platinum will receive 5x on airfare & hotel purchases made through the American Express Travel website. Business Platinum cardholders do not earn 5x on airfare purchased directly with the airline. This means you're limited to the American Express Travel website, which is not a bad thing since in my experience the flight prices are always the same. Just note that the travel site may not have every single flight available like an airline website would have. While it's rare, I have found a few flights and routes that do not exist on the travel site.
AMEX Business Platinum 0.5x Point Bonus
Business Platinum and authorized users of the Business Platinum will be able to receive an extra 0.5 points per $1 spent when a single eligible purchase of $5,000 or more is made with the card. So a purchase of $5,000 would earn 5,000 Membership Rewards Points plus an additional 2,500 Membership Rewards Points for a total of 7,500. The maximum amount of bonus points you can earn with this perk is 1,000,000 Membership Rewards Points per year. This is not a perk of the personal Platinum card.
Both the Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card comes with various credits that are offered each calendar year. These credits are shared among the primary cardholder and any authorized users on the account. Each authorized user does not receive their own annual credit.
$200 Airline Credit
Primary Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders will receive $200 annually towards incidentals made on an airline of their choosing. This choice is given upon receiving the new card. Cardholders will then have the ability to change their selected airline every January. While authorized users will not be able to choose the airline, any accidental charges made on an authorized users card for the chosen airline will be deducted from the $200 airline credit balance. This is balance is shared between all cards tied to the account. Each user does not get their own $200. Do note that gift cards no longer trigger this credit, so you will need to plan ahead on what you plan on using the $200 for. Typical triggers include baggage fees, lounge fees, and in-flight purchases. Seat upgrades after you have already purchased the initial ticket can also sometimes trigger the credit.
AMEX Platinum $200 Uber Credit
The AMEX Platinum Card comes with $200 in annual Uber credit which will only apply to one Uber account. $15 in Uber credit will be deposited into the Uber Cash balance of the Uber account the card is tied to every month with an additional $15 in December for a total of $30. If the same card is added to multiple Uber accounts, only the first Uber account to which the Card is added will receive the benefit. This means if you have an authorized user that uses Uber more than you, have them add their Platinum card to their Uber account. Do not add it to your account if you will not use the credit. The user that has the Platinum Card tied to their account will also be eligible for Uber VIP. Do note that these Uber Credits can also be used for UberEats to get food delivered to you.
The Business Platinum Card does not have the Uber credit benefit.
AMEX Platinum $100 Saks Fifth Credit
Primary and authorized users of the personal Platinum Card will have access to a total of $100 in Saks Fifth credits annually. This is given out as a $50 statement credit between January and June and another $50 credit between July and December. This credit pulls from the same bucket so everyone does not get their own credit. This credit applies to purchases online or at a Saks Fifth's U.S. location. Be sure that you're using a cash back portal like Rakuten when you're using this credit
The Business Platinum Card does not receive credits towards Saks Fifth.
AMEX Business Platinum $200 Dell Credit
Business Platinum and authorized users of the Business Platinum card will receive a total of $200 in Dell credit during the calendar year. This will be $100 in statement credit between January and June and $100 in statement credits between July and December. This credit is shared amongst all accounts. Authorized user will not get their own personal credit. This applies to purchases made directly with online at dell.com or directly with Dell within the United States.
The personal Platinum Card does not receive credits towards Dell purchases.
AMEX Business Platinum Gogo Internet
Business Platinum and authorized users of the Business Platinum card will each receive their own 10 complimentary single flight segment passes for Gogo in-flight internet each calendar year. Do note that this is for segments so your internet session will not carry over into your next flight if you have a layover/stopover. Once Gogo internet is turned on within the flight, you will be given the chance to use your AMEX Internet Pass. I recommend signing up for a Gogo account on gogoair.com and getting that all squared away on the ground before your flight. This will allow you to sign into your Gogo account when you're in the air, click on AMEX Internet Pass, and get connected quickly.
The personal Platinum Card does not receive Gogo Internet passes.
