Paypal Extras Mastercard
The PayPal Extras Mastercard is a decent choice for anyone who does a great deal of spending on Ebay and Paypal. It rewards you for spending done with both PayPal and Ebay along with giving you a little bit of extra for using the card on gas and restaurant purchases. Unfortunately, PayPal Points are really worth that much and some redemptions require you to draw out your plan in advance due to a 21-day restriction. If you're big on Ebay and Paypal, you're better off with the PayPal Cashback Mastercard.
The PayPal Extras Mastercard features four bonus categories. Those bonus categories are gas station, restaurant, PayPal purchases, and Ebay purchases. There is no cap on any of the bonus categories and no limit to the amount of PayPal Points you can earn using the card.
3x Gas Station
Gas Station purchases on the PayPal Extras Mastercard earns 3 PayPal Points per $1 spent. PayPal Points are worth 0.83 cents each when redeemed for cash, so you're looking at a 2.49% return on gas which is okay. There are tons of other cards that earn a better rate on gas station purchases. You can earn 5% cash back with both the Ducks Unlimited Visa and Sam's Club Mastercard or 4% cash back with the PNC Cash Rewards Visa.
Using the PayPal Extras Mastercard for restaurant purchases will earn you 3 PayPal Points per $1 spent. This is equal to a 2.49% return which isn't bad when it comes to dining, but there's room for improvement. You can easily find credit cards that earn a 3% or higher return on restaurant purchases.
When you use the PayPal Extras Mastercard for Paypal purchases, you will earn 2 PayPal Points per $1 spent. This is equal to a 1.66% return when you redeem these points for cash. This is a pretty low return in which the PayPal Cashback Mastercard would earn you a better return of 2%. You can also get the same return using the Citi Double Cash Card.
The Paypal Extras Mastercard earns 2 PayPal Points per $1 spent on Ebay purchases. This is again equal to a 1.66% return when it comes to cash redemptions and you could earn a better rate using a 2% cash back card such as the already mentioned PayPal Cashback Mastercard and Citi Double Cash.
All purchases made on the PayPal Extras Mastercard outside of the bonus categories listed above will earn 1 PayPal Point per $1. This is less than 1% earnings meaning just about any other card can get you a better return. I would not recommend using this card for non-category spend.
Perks and Benefits
There aren't really any perks specific to the PayPal Extras Mastercard outside of the standard benefits you would receive for it being a Mastercard. This is things such as extended warranty, 60-day price protection, and identity theft alerts.
I will say that they do give out targeted promotions and bonuses occasionally which can earn you a great deal of points for minimal spend. This is promotions such as 'Earn 6,000 points when you spend $500 on the card'. These promotions can be a good way to build points.
Sign Up Bonus
The Paypal Extras Mastercard does not have a standard sign up bonus.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The PayPal Extras Mastercard does not have an annual fee. This means you can earn a decent return on your points without having to worry about meeting a certain amount of spend every year to make the card worth it.
Authorized User Fee
There is no authorized user fee for the PayPal Extras Mastercard. If you have friends or family that spend in these categories, adding them as additional users will help you build points.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The PayPal Extras Mastercard has a foreign transaction fee of 3%. This fee is higher than the value of Paypal Points which means using this card for international travel or international spending will eat away your rewards faster than you can earn them. If you're love PayPal but don't love that fee, you can check out the PayPal Cashback Mastercard which doesn't have an annual fee or authorized user fee.
You can use this rewards calculator to calculate how many points, miles, or cash back you can earn based on your spend per category. This calculator will also give you the dollar value of the card based on rewards earned and how much each benefit is worth to you minus the fees. You can click the Compare A Card button to compare this card against another card in the same calculator.
All category spend entered in the primary card's column will carry over to all credit card pages on the site so you don't have to re-enter the same information over again.
