Citi Prestige Card
Calculate how many ThankYou Points you can earn and the cash value of the Citi Prestige based on monthly/yearly spend, card benefits, and the annual fee. Compare the results side by side against any rewards card. Any spend entered into the credit card calculator will carry over to all credit card calculators on the site.
The Citi Prestige Card is Citi Bank's luxury travel card which is consistently compared to both Chase's Sapphire Reserve Card and AMEX's Platinum Card. The card is packed with elite travel benefits you would expect for a card with a $495 annual fee such as $250 in travel credits, Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Credit, and a good return on travel purchases. What sets this card apart from other luxury cards is it's 4th Night Free perk which allows cardholders to book a 4-night consecutive stay and get the 4th night free. It's a simple concept that can save a great deal of money depending on the hotel.
The bonus categories on the Citi Prestige Card has gone through a few changes recently. As of January 2019, this card feature four main categories. Those categories are dining, airfare, hotels, and cruise line purchases. There is no limit to the amount of ThankYou Points you can earn in any of these bonus categories. Below are the details of each category.
The Citi Prestige Card earns 5 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on airfare. Airfare must be purchased directly with the airline in order to earn the bonus points. Since ThankYou Points are worth 1.25 cents at the basic level of redemption for Prestige cardholders, you're looking at a return of at least 6.25% which is not bad at all. When compared to the other luxury cards, at the bare minimum the AMEX Business Platinum Card offers 7.7%, the AMEX Platinum 5%, and the Chase Sapphire Reserve 4.5%. Of course, this is at the bare minimum and does not take into account the extra value you can get from transfer partners and other perks of each card.
The Citi Prestige earns 5 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on all dining purchases. This include cafes, bars, lounges, and fast food restaurants. Purchases at bakeries, certain restaurant/cafes inside department, grocery, or warehouse stores will not qualify for this bonus category. Previously, the Citi Prestige earned 2x points for dining, so the bump up to 5 is a very nice touch to the card. This will give you at least a return of 6.25% which is a few notches higher than the AMEX Gold Card and Barclay Uber Card's 4% return. Depending on how much ThankYou Points are worth to you, this could be one of the best returns on dining if you're able to make use of the remaining perks on the card.
Using the Citi Prestige Card for hotel spending will earn 3 ThankYou Points per $1 spent. This bonus will apply when the card is used directly with the hotel. Usually, co-branded credit cards can easily give you a similar or better return on your spend as well. This is the case with credit cards from Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt. On top of that, hotel credit cards typically offer additional perks such as complimentary elite status, the chance to earn free nights, and more. If you're loyal to a hotel brand, I'd recommend checking out their credit card line-up before committing to using the Citi Prestige, Chase Sapphire Reserve, or any other non-hotel credit card.
3x Cruise Line
New to the Citi Prestige Card, earning 3 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on cruise line purchases is another welcomed addition to the card. Most cruise line credit cards (Carnival Mastercard and Celebrity Visa Signature being the exceptions) do not provide any real benefits or earnings. On top of that, unless you do a lot of cruising the points will usually gather dust and risk expiring. So being able to earn a decent amount of ThankYou Points for this category is great.
Any card spending on the Citi Prestige outside of the five categories above will earn 1 ThankYou Point per $1 spent. In terms of overall return, any 1.5% or higher cash back card would be better in terms of return. The Citi Double Cash and Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa are two examples of solid cash back cards.
Perks and Benefits
4th Night Free Perk
Citi Prestige cardholders will enjoy a complimenary 4th night free with no black‐out dates, when booking four consecutive nights at any hotel through Thankyou.com or calling Citi. At the moment, you can also contact the Citi Prestige Concierge to book nights using the perk. When booked through the Citi Prestige Concierge, the statement credit provided for your complimentary night will be based on the average nightly rate of your stay (excluding taxes and fees). When booked through Thankyou.com, the complimentary night savings will be provided at the time of booking and also be based on the average nightly rate of your stay (excluding taxes and fees).
While unlimited at the moment, starting in September 2019 a twice per year cap will be added to this benefit. While that may be a bummer for some, earning a complimentary 4th night can still save you a great deal of money and should not be overlooked.
Priority Pass Membership
Primary and Authorized users of the Citi Prestige Card are granted Complimentary Access to the Priority Pass Lounges and allowed a maximum of up to two guests or and immediate family members (spouse, domestic partner and/or children under 18 years of age). Any additional guests will be charged a $27 per guest, per visit charge.
$250 Travel Credit
One of the new changes to the Citi Prestige Card is the change from a $250 Air Travel Credit to a $250 Travel Credit making it much easier to use. Purchases made by the Citi Prestige primary cardmember and authorized users on the Card Account are eligible for the $250 Travel Credit. This credit is triggered by any time of travel purchase. So assuming you're using this travel card to travel, this credit should easily be useable during the calendar year.
$100 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Credit
The Citi Prestige card will provide up to a $100 statement credit for a Global Entry ($100) or TSA PreCheck ($75) application fee once the fee is charged to the account. This application fee credit will renew once every 5 years. The application does not have to be for the card holder and the applicant does not have to be accepted into the program(s). The Citi Prestige Card cardholder only has to use their card to pay for the application fee to trigger this credit.
Citi ThankYou Point Transfer
The Citi ThankYou Points Transfer perk allows you to transfer your qualifying and available ThankYou Points to participating airline loyalty programs. This includes airlines such as JetBlue TrueBlue, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. There is no fee to transfer points and the minimum transfer is only 1,000 points.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for the Citi Prestige is 50,000 points after spending $4,000 within the first 3 months of account opening. This is worth at least $500, but can be worth a lot more when you transfer ThankYou Points to airline partners.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The annual fee for the Citi Prestige Card is $495. This is in line with the standard pricing of other luxury travel cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Hilton Aspire Card. Since the Prestige Card features an annual travel credit of $250 the actual fee of the card is down to $200. If you use the 4th Night Free perk the Prestige Card is known for and shop in the 5x and 3x categories this card now has, you should easily be able to make up for the fee. In my opinion, using the card for the 4th night free perk once or twice a year should easily cover the fee without any real spend on the card.
Authorized User Fee
The Citi Prestige Card's authorized user fee is $50 for each additional user with it rising to $75 in September 2019. With the signficant increase in earning rates, I would recommend adding family and friends as authorized users. Any user that spends at least $67 per month in the 5x categories or $112 per month in the 3x categories will easily make up for the additional user fee.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The Citi Prestige Card does not have a foreign transaction fee. This allows you to use the Prestige Card worldwide without worrying about being penalized for purchases overseas.
