Citi Rewards+ Card
The Citi Rewards+ Card is the newest card to join the ThankYou Rewards program and replaces the Citi Preferred Card which is now unavailable. The Rewards+ Card earns a decent amount of points on both grocery and gas station purchases, but what stands out about the card is that points round up to the nearest 10 points and that you can get 10% Points Back for the first 100,000 ThankYou® Points you redeem per year. It has no annual fee meaning it will pair well with the Premier and/or Prestige cards.
The Citi Rewards+ Card features two bonus categories which are supermarket and gas station purchases. There is a limit of $6,000 per year in combined spend between gas station and grocery purchases. After you hit that limit, you will earn ThankYou Points at the non-category rate for both categories. There is no limit to the amount of points you can earn with the Citi Rewards+ Card in general.
Supermarket shopping with the Citi Rewards+ Card will earn you 2 ThankYou Points per $1 spent. This is the only ThankYou credit card to feature the supermarket category making it a necessity for anyone looking to maximize their points. For anyone looking for a higher return outside of Citi's program, you can earn 6% cash back on grocery with the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred. Both the Chase Freedom and Discover IT cards also occasionally feature supermarket/grocery as a rotating 5% cash back category.
2x Gas Station
The Citi Rewards+ Card ears 2 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on gas station spending. Since Citi counts gas station as travel (like all programs should in my opinion), the Citi Premier Card earns a slightly higher 3 points per $1 spent. Since the bonus categories on this card has a cap of $6,000, I'd recommend using the Rewards+ Card only for supermarket purchases and using the Premier Card to cover gas station purchases. That gives you $500 per month to work with for supermarket spend. Other cards that earn big on gas station consist of the Ducks Unlimited Visa and Sam's Club Mastercard which both earn 5% cash back on gas station purchases.
All purchases outside of the supermarket and gas station categories will earn you 1 ThankYou Point per $1 spent. While this is a low return per $1 spent, this card does round your points up to the nearest 10 points. So a $1 purchase can earn you 10 points. That will make this card great for the majority of your non-category purchases since you can earn extra points on all purchases. If you're looking for more of a solid return on miscellenous purchases, you can pick up the Citi Double Cash which earns 2% cash back per $1 spent.
Perks and Benefits
The Citi Rewards+ Card features two benefits that stand out. The Rewawrds+ rounds all purchases up to the nearest 10 points and it offers a 10% rebate on redeemed ThankYou Points.
Point Round Up
Purchases on the Citi Rewards+ Card will be rounded up to the nearest 10. This applies to all purchases including gas station and grocery purchases. This benefit has the ability to net hundreds to thousands of bonus points per year. For example, if you purchase a $0.99 coffee every morning before work with the Citi Rewards+ Card you will earn 10 points per coffee. So after 20 coffee purchases you will have spent $19.80 and earned 200 ThankYou Points. This is equal to earn 10x ThankYou Points per $0.99 spent which is superb.
10% Point Rebate
When you redeem ThankYou Points as a Citi Rewards+ cardholder, you will receive 10% of your points back. This is up to the first 100,000 points redeemed per year. So if you redeem 20,000 points towards travel, you will get 2,000 of those points back. This benefit alone makes this card worth picking up if you focus on earning ThankYou Points. Pair this card with the Premier and/or the Prestige card's excellent earning categories and you have a solid trifecta of cards.
Sign Up Bonus
The standard sign up bonus for Rewards+ Card is 15,000 ThankYou Points after spending $1,000 within the first 3 months of having the card. This is a value of at least $150 but can be worth more with the 10% rebate and even more if you have the Premier or Prestige Card which allows you to transfer your earned ThankYou Points to airline partners.
Credit Card Fees
|Authorized User Fee|
|Foreign Transaction Fee|
The Citi Rewards+ Card does not have an annual fee. This allows you to easily pair this card with other ThankYou Point earning cards to maximize the amount of points you can acquire.
Authorized User Fee
There is no authorized user fee for the Citi Rewards+ Card. I recommend adding friends and family to the card in order to maximize the amount of points you can earn running spend through the card.
Foreign Transaction Fee
The Citi Rewards+ Card has a foreign transaction fee of 3%. That makes this card a bad choice for international travel and spending. The Prestige and Premier does not have a foreign transaction fee, so you can at least earn 1 ThankYou Point per $1 spent on international purchases with those two cards.
Note: The Citi Rewards+ Calculator does not factor in the rounding of points to the nearest 10 since each transaction will vary. Just keep in mind that this benefit can earn you a few hundred to a few thousand extra points depending on your spending habits.
You can use this rewards calculator to calculate how many points, miles, or cash back you can earn based on your spend per category. This calculator will also give you the dollar value of the card based on rewards earned and how much each benefit is worth to you minus the fees. You can click the Compare A Card button to compare this card against another card in the same calculator.
All category spend entered in the primary card's column will carry over to all credit card pages on the site so you don't have to re-enter the same information over again.
