The USAA Rewards American Express Card is a good choice for anyone looking to earn a solid rate of return on dining, gas, and groceries. It's the best point earning card out of the 4 USAA Rewards Points earning cards USAA offers. The drawback is that the card earns 1 point per $1 on non-category purchases and there is no 1.5x earning card to combo with the USAA Rewards American Express Card leaving you with a sad return of 1%. Besides that, it's worth considering if you plan on banking with USAA.

USAA Reward Points

USAA Reward Points can be redeemed for airline travel, merchandise, gift cards, cash rewards into your USAA checking or savings account, applied to your account balance, cruise travel rewards and for charitable contributions. The value of these points will vary depending on the redemption. USAA Reward Points will be worth 1 cent each for most redemptions.

Bonus Categories

The USAA Rewards American Express Card features three bonus categories that earn extra points. Those categories are dining, gas, and grocery. There is no limit to the amount of points you can earn with this card. Below are the details on each bonus category featured on the USAA Rewards American Express Card.

3x Dining

Dining purchases on the USAA Rewards American Express Card will earn 3 USAA Reward Points per $1 spent. Dining purchases include both fast food, fine dining establishments, and anything coded as restaurant. This is equal to at least a 3% return which is not too bad. The Barclay Uber Card does a slightly better job in the dining category offering 4% cash back along with featuring 9 additional categories and having no fees. This is the highest earning on dining you can obtain between the USAA Reward Cards.

2x Gas Station

Using the USAA Rewards American Express Card at gas stations will earn 2 USAA Reward Points per $1 spent. These are businesses that are included in a merchant category identified as primarily selling automobile gasoline to consumers, such as Speedway, Shell, and BP gas stations. Earning a 2% return on gas isn't shabby, but there is definitely room for improvement. The USAA Cashback Rewards Plus Credit Card earns 5% back on the first $3,000 in gas purchases per year. That would be the card to pick up if you're looking to max out on gas earnings while sticking to USAA credit cards. Other cards that have good earnings consist of the PNC Cash Rewards Card which earns 4% cash back per $1 spent.

2x Grocery

The USAA Rewards American Express Card earns 2 USAA Reward Points per $1 spent on grocery/supermarket purchases. These are business that are included in a merchant category identified as primarily selling non-wholesale groceries to consumers (such as neighborhood grocery stores and supermarkets). Places such as Costco, Walmart, and Sam's Club are not included in this category. Earning a 2% return on grocery is extremely low. The AMEX Blue Cash Everyday and AMEX Blue Cash Preferred both earn 3% and 6% cash back respectively and are still two of the best cards on the market in terms of supermarket earnings.

1x Non-Category

The USAA Rewards American Express Card earns 1 USAA Reward Point per $1 spent on non-category purchases. This is a low return of 1% and would be better placed on a card that earns a 1.5% or higher return. If you're sticking to USAA Credit Cards, the USAA Preferred Cash Rewards Visa Signature Card earns 1.5% cash back on all purchases. Outside of USAA, there is a plethora of options including the Capital One Quicksilver, Chase Freedom Unlimited, and AMEX Cash Magnet Card.

Perks and Benefits

Military Benefits

As with all the USAA Credit Cards, the USAA Rewards American Express Card holders will receive an extremely reduced APR rate on all balances for up to 12 months during deployments or PCS. Cardholders will also receive a special rate on the balance of the account when the they enter active military duty which will last until one year after they complete active duty.

Sign Up Bonus

The USAA Rewards American Express Card sign up bonus is 2,500 USAA Reward Points after your first purchase. This is equal to about $25 since USAA Reward Points are worth 1 cents each on average. For the USAA Credit Cards that offer sign up bonuses, they all offer 2,500 points so you will not find a higher sign up bonus on their cards.
