Out of the three cards that earn FlexPoints, the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card is the best out of the bunch. It features several bonus categories along with perks and bonuses aimed towards travel. Based on how much you spend, this card easily be worth the fee due to the value of FlexPoints.

The Value of U.S. Bank FlexPoints

FlexPoints are valued at around 1.5 cents each and can be redeemed for airfare, hotel stays, car rentals, cruises, statement credits and more. You will get the best value out of FlexPoints when they are redeemed for travel. FlexPoints can be transfered to other FlexPoint Accounts with up to a max of 20,000 points a year. FlexPoints can also be purchased at $0.03 a point and a minimum of 3,000 must be purchased. FlexPoints are purchased in increments of 1,000 with a max purchase of 60,000 points a year.

Bonus Categories

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card features three bonus categories. They are restaurants, airlines, and gas stations. Spending within these three categories will earn bonus FlexPoints. There is no limit to the amount of points you can earn with this card. Below are the details on each bonus category featured on the FlexPerks Gold Card.

3x Restaurants

The FlexPerks Gold Card earns 3 FlexPoints per $1 spent at restaurants. American Express requires the establishment to be coded as restaurant in order to qualify for the 3x FlexPoint bonus. FlexPoints are worth 1.5 cents each, so this would be an excellent return of 4.5% for all restaurant purchases. The Chase Sapphire Reserve Card earns 3x Ultimate Rewards Points valued at 1.5 cent each for the same return. Another good choice is the Barclay Uber Card which offers 4% cash back and has no annual or international fees!

2x Airlines

Airline spending on the U.S. FlexPerks Gold Card will earn 2 FlexPoints per $1 spent for a return of 3%. This is mainly focused on airfare purchased directly with airlines. There are cards that earn a better return such as the AMEX Platinum Card which earns 5%, AMEX Business Platinum Card which earns 7.7% with the 35% point rebate, and Hilton Aspire Card which earns a 4.9% return. All of the above cards are luxury travel cards, but provide great benefits that cancel out the $450 annual fee.

2x Gas Stations

The U.S. FlexPerks Gold Card earns 2 FlexPoints per $1 spent on gas station purchases. This will apply to merchants that have a primary purpose of selling gas. As with airline purchases, this will also earn a 3% return which is decent but there are several cards that outright earn 3% without the annual fee. This includes the PNC Cash Rewards Card (4% back), Bank of America Cash Rewards (3% back), and Chase Ink Business Cash Card (5% back) just to name a few.

1x Non-Category

All purchases on the FlexPerks Gold Card outside of the three bonus categories above will earn 1x FlexPoints per $1 spent. This is a return of 1.5% which is good for miscellaneous purchases. A slightly higher return of 2% can be earned with the Citi Double Cash and Blue Business Plus cards, but if you're looking to earn FlexPoints, the FlexPerks Gold is the best card to put the spend on.

Perks and Benefits

Global Entry/TSA PreCheck Credit

FlexPerks Gold Card members will receive up to a $100 statement credit towards a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application. The application does not have to be for the card members and the statement credit will trigger regardless of whether or not the application is approved. The FlexPerks Gold Card must be used in order to receive the credit.

Global Entry/TSA PreCheck is a perk commonly seen on luxury cards such as the AMEX Platinum Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, but it is offered on a few non-premium cards just like the FlexPerks Gold. This include the Bank of America Premium Rewards Card, and Capital One Venture Card.

Complimentary Boingo WiFi

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card members will receive complimentary Boingo Wifi. Boingo Wifi allows you to stay connected worldwide with over one million hotspots. This is a common perk on American Express credit cards including the AMEX Platinum Card and Marriott Brilliant Card.

Global Dining Program

Access to Taste from American Express will be granted for FlexPerks Gold Card members. This perk allows card holders to earn a little extra at over 700 restaurants worldwide. This includes benefits such as discounts on food, a complimentary appetizer or a bottle of wine.

$25 Airline Allowance

When U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card members redeem an award ticket, members may receive up to a $25 airline allowance with the redeemed airline. The allowance will only apply to charges to the FlexPerks Gold Card in which comes from the same airline as the award ticket.

Standard AMEX Benefits

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card also provides standard AMEX benefits that consist of AMEX Offers, concierge service, retail protection, lost luggage insurance, car rental loss and damage insurance, and more.

Sign Up Bonus

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card sign up bonus is 30,000 FlexPoints after spending $2,000 within the first four months of account opening. FlexPoints are worth 1.5 cents each when redeemed towards travel making this bonus worth $450.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card annual fee is $85. Assuming they're being used for travel at a rate of 1.5 cents per FlexPoint, you would need to earn 5,667 FlexPoints to break even at a return of $0. That's $157 per month ($1,884 per year) in restaurant spend or $236 per month ($2,832 per year) in combined spend between the gas station and airline categories.

Authorized User Fee

The FlexPerks Gold Card has a $0 authorized user fee. If you're trying to build FlexPoints, I'd recommend adding users to maximize your rewards.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold Card does not have a foreign transaction fee so you can earn rewards worldwide without devaluing the power of your FlexPoints.
