Shipping, internet, and advertisement spending is just some of the bonus categories that will rake in Ultimate Rewards Points with using the Chase Ink Business Preferred Card. This Ink card features a total 6 bonus categories that earn 3 Ultimate Rewards Points on up to $150,000 in combined purchases. On top of that, the Ink gets a 25% point boost when making purchases through Chase's Ultimate Rewards portal. That means Ultimate Rewards Points earned though spending on the Ink Business Preferred are worth 1.25 cents each. For anyone looking to earn some serious points or perfect the Chase Trifecta, this is a card worth picking up!

Chase Ink Preferred Points Value

Chase Ultimate Rewards Points earned with the Ink Business Preferred card are worth 1.25 cents each when redeemed on the Chase Travel Portal. These points can also be redeemed for cash back, gift cards, Amazon purchases, apple merchandise, and be transferred to any of there 12 travel partners. You can calculate the cash value of any amount of Ultimate Rewards Points as well as calculate the transfer of Ultimate Rewards Points to airline miles and hotel points using the Chase Ultimate Rewards Points Calculators.

Bonus Categories

The Chase Ink Business Preferred Card features six bonus categories which are listed in detail below. The 3x bonus has a cap of $150,000 combined between all six categories. Once this cap is hit, all categories will earn at a rate of a single Ultimate Rewards Point per $1 spent.

3x Travel

Earning 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent using the Chase Ink Business Preferred on Chase's very relaxed definition of travel is a hard offer to pass up. Chase defines travel as:

  • Airlines
  • Hotels, Motels, Timeshares
  • Car Rental Agencies, Taxis, Buses, Trains, Limousines
  • Cruise Lines
  • Travel Agencies, Travel Sites
  • Ferries, Toll Bridges, Highways
  • Parking Lots, Garages
  • Anything else related to travel

That covers just about everything there is to any basic travel! The 25% boost that the Ink Business Preferred receives bumps the value of Ultimate Rewards Points up to an easy value of 1.25 cents when used on their travel portal. This means you will be getting a 3.75% return per $1 spent for travel and all the other 3x bonus categories listed below. Not a bad deal at all!

The only other Chase Credit Card that matches this excellent earning rate is the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card. The Reserve is Chase's luxury credit card that is packed with elite travel perks and benefits at a hefty (but worth it) annual fee of $450 a year. If you're looking at other transferable point programs, the Citi ThankYou Premier Card and Citi's own luxury card The Citi Prestige Card both earn 3x ThankYou Points on travel purchases. ThankYou points have a value of 1.25 cents each when holding either of these two premium Citi cards.

3x Shipping

If you deal with shipping charges, the Chase Ink Business Preferred will earn you 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent. Chase considers shipping as merchants that specialize in mailing packages, hauling freight, and transporting goods or documents. That includes shipping merchants such as:

  • Couriers such as FedEx, UPS, and USPS
  • Postal and Freight Shipping Companies
  • Express Shipping Services
  • Mailbox Stores

The AMEX Business Rewards Gold Card can give the Ink Business Preferred a run for it's points in the shipping category. It has the ability to earn 4x Membership Reward Points on shipping. AMEX also consistently provides heavy discounts on shipping services with businesses like FedEx during the year through it's AMEX Offers program.

15% back on FedEx purchases on top of 3x Membership Reward Points is a hard deal to beat!

3x Internet, Cable, Phone

Chase usually bundles these categories together when it comes to bonus categories. The Ink Business Preferred Card will earn 3 Ultimate Rewards Points on internet, cable, and phone services. Chase considers these charges to be:

  • Internet Service Providers
  • Cable Services and Satellite Television
  • Radio, Cellular, Wireless Data, and Landline Services

Chase has control of the Internet, Phone, and Cable service categories when it comes to earning reward points. These bonus categories are featured on their Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Card (4x Marriott Bonvoy Points; ~2.8% return) and Chase Ink Business Cash (5% cash back). The Ink Business Cash wins this category with a higher return per $1 spent.

3x Advertising

If you advertise through social media or search engines, using the Chase Ink Business Preferred will earn you 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent. Examples of what Chase considers to be advertising are services such as, but not limited to:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google Ads (formerly AdWords)
  • Microsoft Bing Ads

The only card that can compete in this category is the AMEX Business Rewards Gold Card which earns 3x Membership Reward Points in this bonus category. Membership Reward Points are easily redeemable at a value of 1 cent each, but can be worth a lot more when transferred to AMEX travel partners similar to Ultimate Rewards Points.

1x Non-Category

Purchases on the Chase Ink Business Preferred that fall outside of the 3x bonus categories listed above will only earn 1 Ultimate Rewards Point per $1 spent. This is poor card for non-category purchases. I would recommend a 1.5% return card such as the Chase Ink Business Unlimited. If you own the Ink Business Preferred or any other Ultimate Rewards Points earning card, cash back earned with chase can be converted to Ultimate Rewards Points. This opens up a whole world of possibilities for finding the best Chase card combinations!

Perks and Benefits

25% Points Boost

Chase Ink Business Preferred Cardholders will earn a 25% boost to the value of Ultimate Rewards Points when used to redeem travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal. This means Chase points will be valued at 1.25 cent each.

  • Trip Cancellation/Trip Interruption Insurance
  • Roadside Dispatch
  • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver
  • Cell Phone Protection
  • Purchase Protection
  • Extended Warranty Protection

Sign Up Bonus

The standard Ink Business Preferred Card sign up bonus is 80,000 Ultimate Rewards Points. Since Ultimate Rewards Points are valued easily at 1.25 cents each, this is worth at least $1,000 but can be worth more when you transferred to Chase's Airline and Hotel Travel Partners. The value can also change if you own the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card which bumps the value of point up to 1.5 cent each making the bonus worth $1,200.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The annual fee for the Chase Ink Business Preferred Card is $95. Since the Ink doesn't have any benefits or perks specific to statement credits, spend alone will be the only determination on whether or not this card is worth it. Ultimate Rewards Points having a value of 1.25 cents each when having this card. This means it would take $215 per month ($2580 per year) in combined spending across all six bonus categories to break even with the annual fee. That is about $36 per month per category which should be fairly easy to do.

Authorized User Fee

There is no fee to add authorized users to the Chase Ink Business Preferred Card. This could be because there's no extra benefits outside of earning additional Ultimate Rewards Points. Regardless, adding employees (or friends & family) to the Ink card could be useful in reaching capped bonus amount of $150,000 in combined spending.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Chase Ink Business Preferred Card has a 0% foreign transaction fee so all card members can earn Ultimate Rewards Points overseas without worry!
