The Chase Sapphire Reserve is one of the top rewards cards on the market. This is due to the excellent return it offers on both travel and dining purchases as well as the superb travel and insurance benefits it offers. For anyone looking to earn Ultimate Rewards Points this card is a must have. You can pair it with the Ink Business Preferred or any of Chase's cash back credit cards to form your own trifecta of Chase cards. Read on to learn more about the great benefits of this card and calculate how many points you can earn.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Points Value

Ultimate Rewards Points are worth at least 1.5 cents each for Chase Sapphire Reserve Cardholders. This is due to the 50% boost that Reserve Cardholders will receive when redeeming points towards travel on the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. Chase Ultimate Rewards Points can also be transferred to more than 10 partners. Depending on the redemption, this can give your points a value of higher than 1.5 cents each

Below is the average cash value of Chase Ultimate Rewards Points based on redemption. You can get the full details on redeeming points with the Chase Points Value Calculator.

Bonus Categories

The Chase Sapphire Reserve features two bonus categories which are travel and dining. There is no limit to the amount of bonus Ultimate Rewards Points you can earn spending in these categories and no limit to the amount of Ultimate Rewards Points you can earn with the card in general.

3x Travel

Travel purchases made on the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card will earn 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent. With points being worth an easy 1.5 cents each, you're looking at a solid 4.5% return. Chase's definition of travel is pretty broad which means you can really use this card to rake up Ultimate Rewards Points quickly if you're a traveler. Chase defines travel as:

  • Airlines
  • Hotels, Motels, Timeshares
  • Car Rental Agencies, Taxis, Buses, Trains, Limousines
  • Cruise Lines
  • Travel Agencies, Travel Sites
  • Ferries, Toll Bridges, Highways
  • Parking Lots, Garages
  • Anything else related to travel

The Chase Ink Business Preferred Card earns 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 on travel as well which makes it a solid alternative to the Chase Sapphire Reserve. The main difference you'll run into is that the Chase Sapphire Reserve offers a 50% boost to point value on the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal while the Chase Ink Business Preferred only offers a 25% boost. Of course, this only applies to those looking to use the points on the travel portal. If you plan on transferring points to hotels and airlines or plan on using your Ultimate Rewards Points for other redemptions, the boost will not matter.

3x Dining

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Card earns 3 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent on dining. This is again at least a 4.5% return for those looking for the easy redemption option through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal. When it comes to the definition of dining, it's pretty much what you would expect it to be which is purchases made at fast food, restaurants, and fine dining establishments.

Out of the Chase credit cards available, the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card leads that pack in consistent earnings on dining. You can occasionally earn a better return with the Chase Freedom Card when dining is featured as a quarterly bonus category on the card. This also applies to when Chase Pay (or any other mobile wallet) is featured if you use it to pay for your dining purchases (most major fast food chains take mobile pay now). So you'll want to look into pairing the Chase Freedom with the Chase Sapphire Reserve to max out the value of your Ultimate Rewards Points especially since the Freedom has no annual fee.

1x Non-Category

All purchases not falling under travel or dining will only earn 1 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent. Considering you can easily get 1.5 cents in value per point, using the Reserve for non-category purchases isn't a bad option. If you're looking to maximize your Ultimate Rewards Points though, you can pick up the Chase Freedom Unlimited or Chase Ink Business Unlimited and earn 1.5 Ultimate Rewards Points per $1 spent. This gives you a higher return of 2.25%. This isn't a big difference but if you were to spend $2,500 in a month on non-category, you're looking at $30 in value versus $45 in value per month. Multiply that by 12 to account for the full year and you can see that it adds up fast. On top of that, both cash back cards have no annual fee!

Perks and Benefits

$300 Travel Credits

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders will receive $300 in travel credits annually. This credit is offered as a statement credit for purchases made that fall under the category of travel. If you even remotely travel, this is an extremely easy credit to use. There's no hoops to jump through and no complicated rules so you won't find yourself rummage through the internet looking for ways to spend your credit like AMEX's travel credits.

Global Entry / TSA PreCheck Credit

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders will receive a statement credit towards a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee. This credit is availble every 4 years. The statement credit usually posts within 24 hours. If you already have Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, you can use the card to pay for a friend or family members application fee and it will still trigger the credit. Do note that authorized users of the Chase Sapphire will not receive their own credit like American Express Platinum authorized users do.

Priority Pass

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders will receive complimentary Priority Pass Select membership. This allows you to enter over 1,000 lounges worldwide and is a great benefit for those who want to spend their time relaxing before or between flights. For lounges that allow guests to enter, a fee of $27 per guest will be charged to the Reserve card.

Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders will have access to the Luxury Hotel and Resort Collection. This grants special benefits such as complimentary room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out. American Express also offers a similar benefit with access to the Fine Hotels & Resorts Collection with their premium cards.

50% Point Value Boost

Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders will receive a 50% boost to the value of Ultimate Rewards Points when they're used on the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal. This makes the value of Chase's points an easy value of 1.5 cents each. The Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Ink Business Preferred offers a smaller 25% boost to point value on travel portal redemptions for a value of 1.25 cents each. If you plan on using the Chase's travel portal, the Chase Sapphire Reserve will be essential for getting the most value out of your points.

Travel Protection/Coverage

The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers excellent travel benefits. When the card is used to pay for travel, cardholders will receive:

  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance - $10k per person and $20k per trip for per-paid, non-refundable travel expenses
  • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver - up to $75k for theft and collision damage for rental cars in the U.S. and abroad when you decline the rental company's collision insurance
  • Lost Luggage Reimbursement - up to $3k per passenger for checked/carry on luggage that is damaged or lost by the carrier
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement - If your carrier is delayed more than 6hrs or requires an overnight stay, you can receive up to $500 per ticket towards unreimbursed expenses
  • Emergency Evacuation & Transportation - If you or immediate family are injured or become sick during a trip and emergency evacuation is needed, you're covered up to $100k in medical and transportation services

Purchase Protection/Coverage

Along with great travel protection, the Chase Sapphire Reserve also offers great purchase protection. When the card is used to shop and pay for purchases, cardholders will receive:

  • Purchase Protection - Covers new purchases for 120 days against damage or theft up to $10k per claim and $50k per year
  • Return Protection - Reimbursement for eligible items that the store won't take back within 90 days of purchase, up to $500 per item, $1k per year
  • Extended Warranty Protection - Extends the time period of the U.S. manufacturer's warranty by an additional year on eligible warranties of three years or less

Sign Up Bonus

The standard sign up bonus for the Chase Sapphire Reserve is 50,000 Ultimate Rewards Points after spending $4,000 on the card within the first 3 months of opening the account. When used on the Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal, this will offer an easy value of $750. Those who transfer points to partners can possibily get a higher value of $1,000+ while those who go for other redemptions through Chase will get $500 or less.

Credit Card Fees

Annual Fee
Authorized User Fee
Foreign Transaction Fee

Annual Fee

The Chase Sapphire Reserve has an annual fee of $450 per year. With many cards raising the annual fees of their premium cards to around $550, this is actually on the low side. Thanks to the easily redeemable $300 travel credit, the 50% boost in value to points earned on the card (as well as several other Chase cards you own), and the amount of perks this card offers, the Chase Sapphire Reserve can easily be worth the fee.

Authorized User Fee

The Chase Sapphire Reserve authorized user fee is $75 for each additional user. While authorized users of the Chase Sapphire Reserve will not receive as manybenefits as American Express Platinum and Business Platnium authorized users, the ability to earn more Ultimate Rewards Points is always a plus. I recommend adding friends and family as authorizes users, especially if they spend in the travel and dining categories featured on the card.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Chase Sapphire Reserve has a 0% foreign transaction fee which makes it a superb option for anyone looking to earn Ultimate Rewards Points on international travel/spending.
