The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is the entry level card for earning Ultimate Rewards Points. While the card offers a great return the first year thanks to the fee being waived, it's the second year onward that you'll have to make sure the card is worth it. If you plan on redeeming Ultimate Rewards Points on the travel portal or you plan on transferring points to airline and hotel partners, you'll want to consider the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Bonus Categories

The Chase Sapphire Preferred features three bonus categories which are Lyft, travel, and dining purchases. There is no limit to the amount of bonus Ultimate Rewards Points you can earn spending across these three categories and no limit to the amount of Ultimate Rewards Points you can earn with the card in general.

  • 5x Lyft
    • All Chase Ultimate Rewards and cash back credit cards earn on Lyft spend.
    • The Chase Sapphire Reserve earns the highest at 10x.
  • 2x Travel
    • Chase considers travel to be:
      • Airlines
      • Hotels, Motels, Timeshares
      • Car Rental Agencies, Taxis, Buses, Trains, Limousines
      • Cruise Lines
      • Travel Agencies, Travel Sites
      • Ferries, Toll Bridges, Highways
      • Parking Lots, Garages
      • Anything else that codes as travel
  • 2x Dining
    • Chase considers the following to be dining:
      • Restaurants
      • Fast Food
      • Fine Dining
      • Diners
      • Coffee Shops (i.e. Starbucks)
      • Vending Machines
      • Bars
      • Cafés
      • Food Delivery Services
  • 1x Non-Category

The Chase Sapphire Preferred can be a good option if you plan on transferring points to partners. If you plan on redeeming your points using the Chase Travel Portal, you'll want to consider the Chase Sapphire Reserve as it's a very small window in which the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the better option.

If you pick up the Chase Sapphire Preferred, be sure to pair it with one (or all) of Chase's cash back credit cards since you'll be able to convert cash back into Ultimate Rewards Points. This gives you the ability to earn lots more points and adds greater value to the Ultimate Rewards program.

Sign Up Bonus (SUB)

The standard signup bonus for the Chase Sapphire Preferred is 60,000 Ultimate Rewards Points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening. For travel redemptions on the Chase Ultimate Rewards Portal, you'll get a cash value of $750. This is the same cash value of the Chase Sapphire Reserve's 50,000-point sign up bonus since points with the Reserve are worth 1.5 cents each when redeemed on the portal.

In terms of transferring points to partners, the Chase Sapphire Preferred would be the better option since you can transfer your Ultimate Rewards Points for 60,000 airline miles or hotel rewards points versus only having 50,000 miles or points.

Fees

Annual Fee

The Chase Sapphire Preferred's annual fee is $0 the first year, then $95. As with most cards with a waived annual fee, the first year returns exceptional results. Once the annual fee kicks in the second year though, you'll have to re-evaluate the card to see if the Chase Sapphire Preferred is worth it in the long run (see below).

Authorized User Fee

There are no fees associated with adding an additional user to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. This allows you to easily build more points by adding authorized users to your card. I highly recommend doing such if you have friends or family that spends in these categories.

Foreign Transaction Fee

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card has a 0% foreign transaction fee which makes this a solid choice for anyone looking to earn Ultimate Rewards Points on international purchases/travel.
