The Chase Freedom Card is a great cash back card that features 5% cash back rotating quarterly categories. This means that every quarter, the categories in which you earn 5% cash back for will change. This usually allows you to maximize your cash back using the Chase Freedom for that given category.

Do note that you must activate your 5% rotating category every quarter. These will not activate on there own. Chase usually allows you to do this 15 days before the quarter start up until about 15 days before the quarter ends. If you do not activate the 5% category for the quarter, all purchases will be treated as non-category meaning you will earn 1% cash back. This applies to the Discover IT Card as well.

Bonus Categories

Unlike the Discover IT Card which shows its rotating categories for the whole year, Chase keeps their quarterly categories hidden until shortly before the quarter begins. This means that you will not know what lies ahead when it comes to maximizing your cash back. Luckily, Chase pretty much sticks to similar rotating categories every year so you can get an idea of what categories will be featured throughout the year. The 5% cash back offered every quarter has a combined cap of $1,500 between the featured categories. Any spend after the $1,500 will give only give earn you 1% cash back for the remainder of the quarter. Below are the known rotating categories for this year and a few years prior to give you an idea of the categories featured on this card.

  • Quarter 1 (Q1) - January to March
  • Quarter 2 (Q2) - April to June
  • Quarter 3 (Q3) - July to September
  • Quarter 4 (Q4) - October to December

Q3 2019: Gas Stations and Streaming Services

The Chase Freedom Card third quarter categories are gas stations and streaming services. Gas stations purchases are anything that codes as such while streaming services for Chase are considered to be:

  • Netflix
  • Hulu
  • Sling
  • Vudu
  • FuboTV
  • Apple Music
  • SiriusXM
  • Pandora
  • Spotify

Earning 5% cash back during Q3 puts it at the top of the list next to other excellent cash back cards such as the PenFed Platinum (5x Points) and Ducks Unlimited Visa (5% Cash Back). With streaming services, if you have the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred, it earns 6% cash back on streaming services. If you don't have it, spending on the Chase Freedom Card is the next best thing!

Q4 2019: Department Stores, Paypal, and Chase Pay

The Chase Freedom Card fourth quarter categories are card purchases made at Department Stores and Paypal along with card purchases made through Chase Pay. Being able to earn 5% cash back on department store purchases during the winter holiday quarter is a plus, but even better than that is the ability to earn 5% on purchases through PayPal and Chase Pay. These categories provides an easy way to maximize cash back considering that you can use PayPal and Chase Pay for many types of purchases.

The foreign transaction fee for the Chase Freedom Card is 3% making this card a bad choice for international spending.

Since the bonus categories are per quarter, there is no standard calculator to support comparing the Chase Freedom side by side with other rewards cards. The calculator below will calculate the cash back you can earn in any given quarter based on spend. Remember that the bonus cap for each quarter is $1,500 ($500 per month) and that any spend after that will earn you 1% cash back for the remainder of that quarter.
